You know what, I picked that game up for 99 cents the other day at gamestop just for the heck of it and there are things I like better about it than I do madden 09. Field goal kicking is tough as hell on the All-Madden level, penalty sliders are on a much larger scale than 0-20, blocked field goals are possible, and it has a pass lead sensitivity slider. You also cant over pursue on defense are you will get torched, you have to learn to use the strafe button.

Re: After playing the PS3 version for about 2 months and the PS2 version about 5 days

I thought that I would share the end game stats of my preseason opener vs the 49ers

San Fran won 41-27

Total yards:

SF: 388
OAK: 274

Rushing yards:

SF: 163
OAK: 141

Passing yards:

SF: 225
OAK: 133

Penalties:

SF: 4 for 35yds
OAK: 7 for 46yds

Individual stats:

Passing:

J.O'Sullivan: 12/27 189yds 3 TD 1 Int
S.Hill: 6/12 51yds

J.Russell: 2/7 3yds
A.Walter: 12/15 141yds 1 TD
M.Tuiasosopo: 4/9 51yds

Rushing:

F.Gore: 7 carries for 36yds
M.Robinson: 12 carries for 91yds 2 TD
D.Foster: 4 carries for 32yds
Z.Keasey: 1 carry for 4yds

J.Fargas: 8 carries for 33yds
D.McFadden: 8 carries for 46yds
M.Bush: 11 carries for 45yds 1TD
A.Walter: 2 carries for 8yds
O.O'Neal: 3 carries for 5yds
J.Griffith: 1 carry for 4 yds

The game felt amazing. The 49ers ran in the last minutes of the game to eat up the clock. I gave up too many big plays, one because I went to align my guys and they went goofy for a minute as both blitzing LB's ran to the sidelines. I tried to re-create it to see if it was a bug but it never occured again. Weird.

I saw the 49ers throw deep multiple times. I know they attempted passes of over 30 yards in air at least 5 times. All were incomplete, 2 because the receivers dropped the pass. One play that stood out in the 2nd half was I exploded off the line with Kalimba Edwards and hit Shaun Hill in the backfield forcing him to fumble. Higgins had a 75 yard kickoff return and I thought he was going all the way, but was tracked down by a defender who took an excellent angle.

Something else I liked was the coaches meeting on the field after the game to shake hands. I forgot about that. Also, something new is the ability to select what type of celebration you want to do after scoring a TD. You can either do multiplayer, over the top, or subdued. Nice touch. Michael Robinson had a long TD run and was dogpiled in the endzone.

Penalties felt great as it was mostly false starts(even 2 on WR's), but I had a few facemask penalties and the 49ers had a PI.

THANK YOU

Why oh WHY can't they take this engine and just upgrade it to current gen. SO much fun.

And yes, while it's PS2, I actually think the graphics look very good all things considered. This will be my football game of choice this year.
I am not going to lie, after playing my first preseason game, I am in love. Seeing Kiffin(who looks like Andy Reid) get pissed about a facemask penalty that negated a 3rd down stop to Nolan challenging a catch was simply amazing. Its these types of little things that suck you into the atmosphere and make the game much more enjoyable. It honestly shows how "stale" the next gen atmosphere really is.

So basically take the PS2 version, implement 09 graphics and extras, and you'd have a game that would (finally) be worthy of the Madden name. Voila, problems solved. Sad.......

Now let me say this off the bat, its not that I think the PS3 is a bad game, because in my opinion its not, in fact I think its a good game, I just feel as though the PS2 version is a more complete game. How so you may ask? Well lets get something else out there. The PS2 version can't compete in terms of graphics or animations. Thats a given. And the franchise mode in both versions is pretty lame, although I would give the slight nod to the PS2 version only because of player progression in preseason and the fact that I can see position battles in the preseason. I know, pretty minute huh?

But on the field, the PS2 version stands above the PS3. The atmosphere for one is more enticing, given the refs on the field, the chain gang, the crowd, the grass stains during non weather games, the dirt infields during the first few weeks of the season, and the animated coaches. Again, its minute, but it really draws you in. And to be quite honest, I enjoy listening to Madden and Michaels call the game vs Collinsworth and Hammond, even though M&M's commentary has been recycled for many, many years.

But aside from the "fluff", the core gameplay is more solid. Fatigue, the ability to have player matchups, the ability to shade defenders inside or out to better guard slants and/or out patterns, smart zones on defense(being able to have your zone defenders "guard" the first down line) the ability of the QB avoidance, the cpu challenging plays, and seeing passes go awry and/or be dropped are really welcomed and once you play the older versions, you quickly realize how much you are missing them. Robo QB, as people have termed it, still seems the same in the PS2 as the PS3, although the user is given more weapons to counteract. At least, I guess given the complaints I've seen.

This isn't meant to bash the PS3 version nor meant to be used as a springboard to bash the next gen versions and EA, although we all know it will and which is why I was hesitant to post this at all. But I felt it could be useful to Ian and others to see what a fan of EA football fan thinks about the comparison between the two versions.

Anyhow, I'll stop here and let other discuss/debate my "findings" and hopefully this thread can stay mature and maybe offer some valuable feedback in regards to what a person like me is looking for in the PS3 version that it doesn't have yet, but really added to the atmosphere of the PS2 version. Who knows.

But please, lets not turn this thread hostile. If anyone has any specific questions about the PS2 version or would like to know more info on what I feel is better/worse, feel free to ask away. But I will answer one question that people may ask. Yes, I will and am still playing the PS3 version and yes, I now own both versions of the game. Ok, maybe I answered two questions.

I have a PS3 and I also thought about getting the PS2 version. Why not I did with the Show 07' for the PS2. Sop why not for Madden...

I gave up and just play on my ps2. The PS2 network lag has made playing online very painful though.

To get my Football fix for this year I decided to use the platoon strategy. My SP franchise is on the PS2, I play NFL2k5 online and NCAA 09 Head to Head. Madden 09 might be getting traded in for NBA2k9 tomorrow
I called sony about this problem they told me to open up some ports on my router i havent tried it yet though.

running is well balanced. I posted stats from my preseason game. Both myself and the cpu ran the ball just fine.

Re: After playing the PS3 version for about 2 months and the PS2 version about 5 days

I find this thread ridiculous, it just adds to my continued disappointment with the new gen Madden (we as consumers are getting robbed).

There is absolutely no reason that the PS2 version should still even be made, and there is absolutely no reason that the PS2 version should even be of any comparable quality to the next gen. version. It is a farce.

Personally, I can not get into the new version of Madden. It just isn't fun. I would love to try the the old version but I had to settle on a stinking 40 GB PS3, and there is no way my wife would even approve of a Deuce purchase. Oh well.

PS: This has been a good thread to read, I am glad some of you are getting your pro football fix.
