He's probably got an old 40 gig version. Only the 60 and 80 gig PS3's are backwards-compatible.(They have stopped making 40 gig...)

*on topic*
I just read a user review on Gamespot who mentioned "you can see water spray off the helmets during rain games", and there's a "deep franchise mode to keep you busy".

Also, searching Youtube, I've seen a couple vids that DO show the refs as well as REAL animated sidelines.

I just may spend $40 bucks and check this one out. Thanks CB!

While not quite the same as CB, I bought '08 for the PC (digital download) a few months prior to '09 coming out - best PS2/XBOX1 engine Madden I've seen. It has a few camera and stat overlay glitches, but it looks really nice at 1440x900 (that's my TV, which doubles as a PC monitor) and plays a great game on the field. Plus since I'm a heavy CPU-only type gamer, it's easy to set up the game and just watch the CPU duke it out (and be able to tweak it with sliders that have visible effects!)

I don't know if it's better, but it's a nice change of pace from the PS3 game sometimes. I'm glad I got it (and cheap, too).I'll definitely have my eye on 2010 when it returns to the PC - it was just taking a year off, right?

PS2 Madden is definitely solid. My biggest gripes are probably the ease of field goal kicking, and the slow down in the frame rate at times. Its a good game but if you've been playing Madden on the PS2 for years like I have, then it really has a "been there, done that" feel to it.

yeah field goal kicking is as easy as 1..2..3.. FGA is the only slider that I mess with as I put it right now at 25 for both myself and the cpu, but may lower it to 0 before I start the regular season.

So, as we all have been saying, to make Madden great, take the last gen versions and port all features (or 90%) of them over to next gen and tweak. We dont need a ton of new stuff, build on what works........

I've been trying to get it to work from day one and am having the same issues as you. I've tried updating the PS3, dl the ps2 network adapter driver on the PS3 but nothing seems to work.

I gave up and just play on my ps2. The PS2 network lag has made playing online very painful though.

To get my Football fix for this year I decided to use the platoon strategy. My SP franchise is on the PS2, I play NFL2k5 online and NCAA 09 Head to Head. Madden 09 might be getting traded in for NBA2k9 tomorrow
