Not only that, but the handball was a pretty weak call too. If you're going to call that one, why not call the incidental one by the U.S. defender from earlier? Hands were tucked into the body in both cases and didn't aide the player in stopping the ball.

Different rules. That's always for wasting time restarting the game for a free kick or goal kick. This was an indirect free kick for holding the ball during open play. The letter of the law is 6 seconds, she held the ball of about double that. That's why you always see the keeper wait to pick up the ball until a defender comes towards them. Or they drop it to their feet and can move around as much as they want before passing it.

Even though you rarely see it called, the ref was within the rules when she made that indirect free kick call. The handball was the more iffy call to me.

Bottom line is at the end, Canada didn't defend well enough until the final whistle. They were playing for penalties at the end and got burned.

A nicely worked corner makes it all tied at 1.

Re: Soccer

Is their a reason why soccer in the Olympics is Under 23 while Basketball has all the pros?

Because FIFA World Cup >>>>>> Summer Olympics >>>>>>>>>>>> FIBA World Championships.

This is why it's stupid for the NBA (and NHL, for that matter) to consider removing their players from the Olympics. It's the biggest international stage possible for basketball or hockey.

Absolutely. I don't dispute that the US deserved to win. But when you have a once-in-a-generation chance to beat a team 10x better than you, it'd be nice if the refs didn't get involved.

Re: Soccer

Abby Wambach was pretty smart about it. She would run up next to the ref each time the Canadian goalie held on to the ball and just count out loud how long McLeod was holding the ball and intentionally slowing down the game. She also says that McLeod was warned multiple times by the referee to speed it up.
