Utter domination. That has to be the best women's gymnastics team the US has ever put out there.

Re: Official Olympic thread

Anybody check out the badminton? 4 teams booted out for trying to lose on purpose. 2 teams from South Korea and 1 each from China & Indonesia. All 4 teams were already through to the knock-out stage but tried to throw the match on purpose to get a more favorable match in the next round.

Badminton scandal!

From what I've read, they brought this on themselves. Usually, the badminton tournament is a straight knockout format, not this group-to-seeding thing they brought out for this Olympics. Other coaches even warned officials that this would happen in this format - especially with the Chinese teams. It sounds like 20 of the last 99 matches that were supposed to be between two Chinese teams at tournaments were walkovers where the match didn't even get played.

Gotta admit I'm confused. How does having a loss get you a favorable matchup? They don't believe in 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 seeding?

The final matches of the groups were not played at the same time, so the Chinese team that played later knew that if they lost, they wouldn't have to face the other Chinese team until the final. The brackets for the knockout rounds are drawn up beforehand like in major soccer tournaments. So for example, Group 1 winner plays Group 3 second place, Group 2 winner plays Group 4 second place, etc.

So the Chinese team started throwing their match against South Korea first, the South Koreans noticed it so they started tanking too. Then later another South Korean team tried to throw their match because China had done it.

I saw a video of it, the crowd was booing and generally pissed at what was going on. And the officials were trying to get them to actually try by warning them. I mean, it was blatant. They were serving it into the net on purpose, hitting wide shots, and not even trying to go after shots.

Re: Official Olympic thread

Disgrace is right. That is the most absurd thing I've ever seen. They should all get a lifetime ban from the sport.

Now everyone should know why FIFA/UEFA starts the final group matches at the same time.
