To be fair, Cherry does have a pretty outstanding knowledge of hockey; when he's talking simply about the game, he's usually bang on. But when he gets started on his whole xenophobic slant, and tries to push his view on the ethos of hockey, he comes off as a real dinosaur.
That's what I was talking about when I said he is far from an idiot. The guy knows hockey, but I do agree that when he talks about other things like that time he was taking shots at the European players and stupid things like that then yeah he does come off as an idiot.
You have to understand too, Don Cherry is god-like in Canada, lol. :-)[Reply]

It boggles my mind how people talk about fighting as "part of the game". Until you get to the pro or Canadian Jr. level, fighting is not part of the game at all. It's an automatic game misconduct and almost surefire suspension.
In the 91-92 season, the NHL had 1,541 fighting majors called in a 22 team league. The league had 5 straight seasons 1,500 fighting majors handed out. The instagator rule was implimented the following season. Fighting majors called dropped to 1,255 in a 24 team league in the 92-93 season. The NHL had 734 fighting majors called in the 08-09 season in a 30 team league. Thats up from 466 called in the 05-06 season but it's way down from back when the rule was put in. The instagator rule while good in thought, it had a unintendend consiquence. It allows the Ulf Sammuelsson, Claude Lemieux, Dale Hunter and now Sean Avery to skate freely. When you have dirty or so called chippy players getting a free ride, the result is more stick play. These guys do there dirt and hide on the bench. The most violent acts on the ice for the most part are post instagator rule and all of them minus Bertuzzi involved stick play.
Don Cherry is correct. The Olympics and college hockey have no fighting but stick play is through the roof.

I had to google and youtube "Don Cherry" to figure out what you were talking about. He's definitely a piece of work but I like him. At least he speaks his mind. But omg those suits! :-)[Reply]

I love fighting in Hockey. I shoot toronto Marlies games and love when there's a fight. Last week there was a good 3 min bout both guys landing big blows. At the end they stopped punching and gave each other a pat on the back. It was the best Hockey fight I've ever seen and it was a awesome!
To me it is part of the game and allows you to stand-up for yourself. If someone is doing cheap things to you, trash talking, dirty play - at least you can kick their ***. Most of the fights I see in the AHL are totally legit and I don't blame them one bit.
I would hate if they got rid of it and for what? so some people feel more comfortable watching the sport?...The game shouldn't submit to artificial PC sentiments.
The real dinosaurs are the people trying to ban fighting and also keep MMA out of ontario. People want to dull things down and outlaw things that have no impact on society - they think everyone should have the same point of view as them and want their way to be the only possibility. I mean there's people who want to ban fighting in hockey who DON'T EVEN WATCH THE SPORT!?!?!?

the NHL is already the least favorite Major sports, taking away Fighting would probably bankrupt the league.

This thread does show the great part of hockey videogames, where fighting can be on or off, as the user wishes. By the way, I love the NHL 10 fighting. First person is a nice touch, and the ability to start fights when you want (to get the team fired up or retaliate) is great!
