I'm not picking on hockey, but with football, were talking about guys wearing pads/helmets and getting tackled, not getting smacked in the face repeatedly by bare knuckles. Huge difference in my mind. [Reply]

Ok, if we ever meet in person lets both agree to fight and then lets see if the cops get called on us or not.

I'm not necessarily outraged by fighting in hockey, I just dont think all the pounding each other right in the face with bare fist should be glorified. [Reply]

Yeah but you could attribute that to the person who called the cops not knowing both people agreed to fight and thinking it was just a random beatdown or something like that. And what about boxing or MMA? Fighting in Hockey is similar to those sports, do you have an issue with them?

I'm not trying to say you are wrong for not liking fighting or not wanting it in the game because fighting is probably 50/50 among fans who want it or don't want it in the game. [Reply]

I also wonder what's going on in the players' minds just before the fight. I mean when you see 2 players fighting, it looks staged, almost comical. I saw a fight last night between a Ranger and a Penguin winger, right after the faceoff, and it's like, one moment they're at the faceoff and the next minute they have fists up like some 1920's boxing match. It looks as though they planned it before the game. So does one player challenge another, or does the fight "just happen"? [Reply]

At least in boxing they do wear gloves and a mouth piece. I'm not really a fan of MMA.

Like I said before though, I'm not picking on hockey I just think they could do without all the fisticuffs, but in the end, I will still watch. [Reply]

MOST of the time, they just happen. But there was 1 time when Georges Laraque (The best fighter in the league) was mic'd up and he talked to a guy before a faceoff and asked him if he wanted to fight and they just agreed to do it.

Another thing about fighting is that it's kind of like one of those ""unwritten rules" that baseball has. Like the whole idea of throwing at guys and responding, that type of thing. With fighting it's sometime used to spark a team and give them some energy. Say if a team is losing 3-0, a coach will send his enforcer out to go and start a fight to give the team some energy. Another example would also be when one team's star player gets laid out, a teammate will more often than not go and start a fight with the guy that made the hit as a way of protecting his teammate.

So yeah, I agree with you guys that fighting isn't the greatest thing in Hockey and it can sometimes be unnecessary but at the same time it can be used as a strategic part of the game. Also, in the Playoffs fighting is at a really reduced level. The referees tend to break up fights in the Playoffs before they even start. And please don't let fighting be something that keeps you guys away from watching Hockey or appreciating the sport because it is an amazing game and there is so many other good aspects of Hockey to appreciate. Like the saying goes, don't let 1 bad apple ruin the bunch or something like that, lol. [Reply]

When? How? The only thing they did to reduce fighting (to the best of my knowledge) was implementing the instigator rule. You always hear idiots like Don Cherry make this claim, that eliminating fighting will increase stick fouls. Maybe in the short term, but I have my doubts that it would continue over the long term.

It boggles my mind how people talk about fighting as "part of the game". Until you get to the pro or Canadian Jr. level, fighting is not part of the game at all. It's an automatic game misconduct and almost surefire suspension. [Reply]

Don Cherry is far from an idiot. [Reply]

To each his own, I guess. That was really not at all what my post was about, but whatever.

To be fair, Cherry does have a pretty outstanding knowledge of hockey; when he's talking simply about the game, he's usually bang on. But when he gets started on his whole xenophobic slant, and tries to push his view on the ethos of hockey, he comes off as a real dinosaur. [Reply]

Bingo!

And Georges Laraque is NOT the best fighter in the league. At least Derek Boogaard would certainly disagree with that statement:-)...... [Reply]
