2k10/Nhl10 after a couple of weeks with the game:

I was going to pick up 2k10 most likely tomorrow.. I have yet to play it. But there are a few things in NHL10 that is really buggin me... I will keep Nhl 10 though and whatever game I like most I will keep.. Please post your thoughts for those who have played both games.. Please try not to attack each other.

NHL10

I will just tell you how I feel about this game.. I love the graphics and annimations for the most part.. The goalies are good for me but sometimes almost too good.. I have had many games that I can't score and many that I score 10 or so... As far as goalies are concerned I have had almost all the goals against me go short side... and it seems that I can almost score top corners against the cpu at will... But on regular play if I'm not trying to pick corners to shoot the goalies are crazy good. I see a few different goals go in but more often then not again top shelf.. This isn't good for me because there were a couple of times that I took a slapshot from the point and it deflect of someone and go in.. Then the horn goes off and crowd jumps to it's feet.. Simply a great feeling. More often then not though I feel a little bummed about goalie play..
I am not a online player so I can't comment there. I have tried a bunch of differen't slider sets and have been having a really hard time to like any of them.. Sometimes I feel that the game is too easy on allstar and normal setting but then switch on hardcore and the Cpu gets about a 10 click speed up and attack you from every which way yet you are still skating at a normal speed... I have had games where I outshot the cpu 45 to 15 with a 3-1 lead and mid 3rd I can't touch the puck and loose 6-3... It's sooo frustrating.. Then I tinker with the sliders and settings a little and I can't touch the cpu.. They will have 45 shots to my 9 or something like that... It's very frustrating and almost feels scripted...
The think that kills me despite the negativity above there are times 1st through mid 3rd period it i am having soooo much fun... Then something kicks in... I can't call it comeback AI truthfully because it doesn't happen often.. But the play definately changes. One would say well if a NHL team is down in the third, they do play harder... Well imo that's true but in this game again it feels scripted..
I will give 2k a shot soon and will keep both games... Truthfully I will keep them until these games get patched... Because honestly you never know what the patch will do... I will report back after I have played 2k10.. I put this in Hockey(other thread) so hopefully there won't be any flame wars... Thanks for listening to my rant LOL!!

Re: 2k10/Nhl10 after a couple of weeks with the game:

I haven't played NHL10 yet but plan on doing so this weekend (hopefully).

Hockey games are not easy to program. With the constant movement there are so many intangibles needed that I can't even begin to imagine how difficult programing AI would be.

That said, one area that most hockey games suffer from is figuring out how to make scoring realistic. And by this I mean, in the real NHL, scores are low mostly because of defensive systems. Sure, some goalies are fantastic and can steal games, but for the most part, if a player has time and space with the goalie, they'll score. The snipers will score more than 3rd liners, but the % is pretty close.
So what hockey games need to do is emulate tough defenses so that when you do get a prime chance, you have a pretty good shot to bury it.
But does that sell hockey games?

As much as I don't want to believe it, I would say well over 70% of those that buy hockey games are not hardcore fans. A lot probably don't even play or watch the game.
So would they be happy to fight and claw for a measely 8 quality chances? Maybe not.

That's why I think you see uber goalies and weaker defenses. It allows the gamer to get quality chances without running the scores up to ridiculous numbers.

Saying that, I can't really comment on NHL10 as I don't have it. For all I know, it might not be like this at all.
In 2K10, I can tell you that if you get in tight on a goalie, and you're controlling a good player, you'll bury it more often than not. It's just getting those chances that's tough.

In the end, both games sound like they have issues that can drive you crazy but also have some really cool things to keep you coming back for more.

That trend is something that's been going on since 2005 in my opinion. The last time I was completely satisfied with one game over another was NHL2K3. NHL2004 was pretty freakin' great too.
But the last 3 years it's been a bit frustrating I found that if one game did something awesome the other did it poorly. And all that ended up happening was me spending over $100 on two hockey games and my poor 360's disc drive getting worn out from swapping games all year.

Re: 2k10/Nhl10 after a couple of weeks with the game:

I am an offline franchise guy (I never play online), and I have loved NHL 2k series through 2k7 (I am the only one who still liked 2k7 better than 2k8). I did not bother with 2k9, but I did buy 2k10. Oh, and I can't stand the franchise play in 2k10 . . . at all. You can't look at the draft pool after it is created without starting the draft. And once you start the draft, you can't stop. No option to save. No option to review the draft pool before starting the draft. I like to check things out for a couple days, maybe trade up or down, depending on the prospects. Bad enough they took out any scouting or personality from the 2k7 game. I know to most gamers, this is minor, but to me it is a game killer. Complete waste of $50. Time to check out NHL 10.

Re: 2k10/Nhl10 after a couple of weeks with the game:

I got both games from the start and went back and forth for a while and had the same problems you did with NHL 10 in that I had a hard time scoring. 2k10 out of the box for a lot of people didn't play well but with sliders it does play a good game.

My biggest problem with NHL 10 is that if you play offline in addition to the hard time scoring is the comeback AI or whatever you want to call. I am linking to a post I made in another thread. check out my post on page 1 and the videos I posted.

Is there any comback A.I in this game?

Re: 2k10/Nhl10 after a couple of weeks with the game:

I'll preface this: hockey games are my favourite videogames, period. I play hockey 2-3 times per week 12 months a year and I watch every game that I can from pre-season to playoffs. I have an addiction, I can admit it.

Ok, moving on.. Initially both games were tied for me basically. Though 2k10 was just atrocious out of the box, after mixing up a nice set of sliders the game really felt great and I couldn't put it down.

Unfortunately, I think that was the peak - the game hasn't gotten worse and I haven't noticed any new bugs or anything like that, I just think I discovered all it had to offer early. I'm still having a good time with it and I don't plan on trading it in just yet, but I don't imagine I'm going to be enjoying it any more than I already have.

NHL 10 on the other hand for me just seems to get better and better. It seems every day or two I'm discovering some neat little detail here or there that really blows me away. That combined with the fact that I haven't even touched GM mode yet makes me about 99% sure it'll be my main hockey game this year.

I like both games a lot. If these 2 games could have a kid together. I think we would have an amazing hockey game.

Exactly. Hockey-videogame-season always makes me wish that EA takeover of 2k would've actually happened.. Of course when non-sports videogame season (Late fall I guess?) kicks in, I'm glad it didn't.

Re: 2k10/Nhl10 after a couple of weeks with the game:

Both games have a lot of pro's and con's. And it seems the con's of one game are pro's for the other.

EA gets the nod for arena ambiance, commentary, BAP, sounds, controls (most aspects), neutral zone play, puck physics and goalies.
2K gets the nod for player separation and franchise mode.

Both games have very good AI in most cases, and dumb AI in others.

Player separation is really big for me so I like 2K for that reason. But I love the puck physics and 'loose' play of NHL10.

Looks like I'll have another year of flip-flopping. I'll need to order another drive for my 360.

I agree with this and was prepared to keep both games but then I get fed up with the Comeback AI or whatever you want to call it in NHL 10 and stuck with 2k10 this year.

OTP is really awesome, and seems like more and more people play OTP only now online.

But the Versus online mode is slow, boring and too much and easy boardplay. Scoring is based mostly around rebound and the close deke. Boring. I still win, but come on, itīs not really that fun and itīs not the NEW NHL.

Hooked on OTP though.

NHL2k gets alot better with sliders and over time.
