OS Poll: Will there be more or less sports video games in five years?

There has been a lot of attrition and franchises lost in our genre this generation. With us on the cusp of a new console generation within the next 18 months, we have to ask you all what you think: Will there be more or less sports video games in five years?

Be sure to vote above you in the forums and to your right on the frontpage.

Question: Are we only counting licensed sports products or all sports games in general?

I voted less, but think about it. With all of the sports titles that have already been canned(MVP baseball, NCAA Basketball & CH series, NHL 2K, NFL 2K, etc.) can it really get any worse?

However, to counter that, the sports titles that are out there..are pretty popular(madden, EA NHL, NBA 2K, The Show, NCAA). So itll be interesting to see what happens.

I also voted less and looking at past trends this seems to be the case (we have lost NFL 2K, College Hoops, NHL 2K and until recently MLB 2K).

So 5 years from now I see: FIFA, MADDEN, NCAA and The Show. I am not so sure about NBA 2K (too grim to think about that right now).

But we might also perhaps see some more/newer bi/tri annual releases such as an MMA game, a rugby title and other "niche" sports.

In general, I am sticking with less

Less...that's the pattern. until someone does something that's actually innovative and pushes the medium forward there will continue to be fewer and fewer sports games. 2K (MLB 2k), EA (NBA Live) are proving this theory true year after year. People are sick of mediocre sports games that don't change for the better from year to year in any significant way. I can easily picture a day where there's only one developer standing for any given sport (EA/football, Sony/baseball, 2K/Basketball, EA/hockey, EA/soccer). The golden age of sports gaming is way behind us and has been for about 10 years.

I think this is all we'll have left on the next generation:

FIFA
Madden
NBA Live (with the strong possibility of 2K being bought out and moved over to EA)
MLB The Show
NHL
UFC

Games I'm not sure of:
NCAA Football
NBA 2K (I hope so but not sure of 2K's future)
PES
WWE
Top Spin
Tiger Woods

I do very much believe that EA will be the only studio producing sports titles, outside of MLB The Show.

My Mind says (less) My heart says( More)

If ea is the only gaming revenue that is received to the Big four sports, College etc, I think the Sports will Cheapen Liscencing for all devs to make again, They want to generate all the money they can, and If they think they can rely on 1 or 2 companies to bring in the projected numbers they wanted, they will be sorry. And Multi media is too big a sports market for the big 4 and others to ignore.

I'd like to believe in what you're saying but if the people who control licensing could make more money buy opening it up to more developers they would. There would be no reason no too...EA owns the NFL license because they pay the NFL more than the NFL would make off of three or four companies having license rights.

Eh, EA is just gonna find a way to make Connected Careers span across all their games. Play a little college football, get drafted, go play hockey in your spare time, and manage a futbol club via DLC upon retiring from Madden NHL 14. All in one I'm still holding on to hope that EA will bring back a legit baseball game, some day. I'm shocked WWE games are still around, I love WWE 12, but how often do you see/hear about it as opposed to FIFA or Madden or The Show? But like videlsports said, my heart also says more. And with more games, companies would have competition and reason to make a better product.
