Breaking News
Indianapolis, IN
Today the NCAA has announced that they will be adopting a relegation system to determine the champion of college football.
"This will add a fair balance of competition to all FBS teams" NCAA President Mark Emmert said.
The NCAA will now adopt a 3 tier system. Tier 1 will consist of the Pac 12, SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 as the top conferences. Each conference will have 14 teams split into two divisions. Each division winner will then play in a conference championship game. Each Conference champ will earn a BCS bid. The top two Tier 1 teams will face off in the BCS National Title game. Only a Tier 1 team may be in the match up.
Tier 2 will consist of the ACC, Big East, Mountain West and Conference USA conferences. Each conference will have 10 teams, each team will play each other round robin style for conference play. The best record is the conference champ and earns a BCS bid to play a Tier 1 team.
Tier 3 is made up of the WAC, Sun Belt and the MAC conferences. The WAC and MAC have 9 teams while the Sun Belt have an 8 team conference. There can only be one Independent and that is reserved for the consensus worst team in America. This year that honor goes to the University of Texas- San Antonio. The Road Runners are new to the FBS division. They join Texas State and Montana as the newcomers to the NCAA's top football division. Montana was a late add after UMass was unable to field a team up to FBS standards. Montana jumped at the opportunity to join college football's best competition.
To move up a Tier you must win your conference, to drop down a tier you must have the worst record in the conference. The Independent is voted on by the same people and writers who vote for the Heisman Trophy.
The Tiers and Conferences will be announced shortly.

The Re-Alignment
Indianapolis, IN
Today the NCAA has release the new conference alignment. Early consensus has been that the new alignments have been well received, but there are many fans, coaches and school presidents upset with their program's tier status.
"For those fans, coaches and university presidents who are upset with their new placement, Your team will have the chance to prove itself on the field." Said NCAA President Mark Emmert.
"The Re-Alignment committee, did a fantastic job to realigning each school and conference. It was not an easy job and they wish everyone success this upcoming year." Emmert added.
The committee not only considered recent success but the success over the last decade. Also they considered and polled over 5,000 fans to get their pulse on every team a crossed the nation. The tiers tried to get geographically closer schools in the same conference.
Relegation was formally announced. To be relegated from Tier 1, you must be the worst team in your conference. To move up from Tier 2 you must win your conference, to move down; finish last. Tier 3 only has three conferences, so those three conference winners will move up to Tier 2. A combination of record, conference strength and stats will determine the fourth Tier 3 team to move up. Only the worst overall team in Tier 3 will be moved to the Independent, it will also be decided by record, conference strength and stats.
The following is the breakdown of the conferences and Tier system. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 conferences are tied together. Meaning The Pac 12 and Mountain West will relegate with each other, the Big 12 and Conference USA relegate with each other, the Big 10 and the Big East and the SEC and ACC relegate with each other. Tier 3 teams will move up to a Tier 2 conference based on location same with the Tier 2 send downs.
Next we will take a look at Montana's depth chart, schedule and recruiting along with the Pre-Season All Americans and WAC pre-season all conference teams. The top 5 Heisman hopefuls will be announced alone with the top 25 poll.
Stay tuned to all your Montana and college football information and needs.

Team Outlook and Season Outlook
Missoula, MT
Today marks the beginning of a new era in Grizzly football. They have officially joined the NCAA's top division. It comes under a new sweeping change in the FBS division with the new relegation rules to decide a champion. Montana will start in Tier 3, the lowest Tier in the new system. But this gives the team a hope of bringing a conference championship in the first year in the new division. Joining Montana in the new look WAC conference are Navy, Ball State, Northern Illinois, North Texas, Marshall, San Jose State, Buffalo, New Mexico State and fellow FBS newcomer Texas State.
Navy, Northern Illinois and San Jose State figure to fight it out for the title. San Jose State is a surprise but they lead the conference in pre-season all conference players named. Marshall and Buffalo also figure to be a factor in the race.
With a new leap the Grizzlies have hired a new head coach. Coach Brandon Benson will take over the reigns of the program. He runs a pro style offense that focuses on getting the run game started to fuel the passing game. On Defense he runs an aggressive 4-2-5.
Montana's on field hopes are lead by JR QB Jordan Johnson and SR WR Sam Gratton on offense. SR RB Peter Nguyen also has to have a big year for the Grizzlies compete. On Defense the Grizzlies are led by JR OLB Jordan Tripp and SR MLB Brock Coyle. SR DE Josh Harris needs to have a big season to help the Grizzlies do the unthinkable. In the Montana Mountains
Spencer Ware scoring his 4th TD of the day, on top of 185 yds rushing.
Grizzlies Put Up Fight in Debut, Fall Short
Baton Rouge, LA
Montana played their first FBS in one of the most intimidating places in the country, Death Valley in Baton Rouge. Early on you could see the players we anxious or nervous. LSU's star RB Spencer Ware ran right through the teeth of the Grizzlies defense for the tune of four touchdowns. Two of them coming early in the first quarter. S Bo Tulley got two early interceptions but the Montana offense stalled. They wouldn't record their first, first down until late in the second quarter. Ware scored his third touchdown of the game in the second quarter giving the Tigers a 21-0 halftime lead.
"It looked real grim there in that first half" Coach Benson said.
Then on the opening drive in the second half the offense started to put it together. "We started to click, the receivers started catching the ball and the line made some great blocks for Peter (Nguyen) to get through" Benson added.
They cut the lead to 21-7 with a Johnson to WR Sam Gratton 6 yard pass for the score. LSU would rush down the field again to answer. Spencer Ware broke off a 37 yard touchdown score to build the 21 point lead again, 28-7. But the Grizzlies didn't quit. The offense capped a 13 play drive with a short 3 yard pass from Johnson to TE Greg Hardy for the score. Then Marlon Miles made a terrific interception giving Montana their third of the game. "We knew we'd score after that. Our confidence was high, we wanted to shock the college football world" Coach Benson said.
The Grizzlies would score off a 26 yard pass on four down. Jordan Johnson took a hit that resulted in a roughing the passer call, but still completed the pass to WR Mitch Saylor for the score. With 2:36 remaining the Grizzlies needed a stop and they got one with 1:00 left. After the punt :26 seconds remained. After a long completion Johnson's next pass would be intercepted with :03 left. LSU survived the scare.
"We put the conference on notice, You're going to have to beat us. We'll fight til the end" Benson remarked,
Spencer Ware took home the Player of the Game honors with 25 att, 185 yards rushing and 4 TD.
Only one big surprise in the WAC this week. Navy upsets Penn St in State College. It wasn't even close, Navy won by three touchdowns. In conference play Northern Illinois lit up Ball State and Western Michigan prevailed over Buffalo.

Game Notes
This is game #2 of Montana's grueling non conference schedule. Texas Tech looks to air out the ball. S Bo Tulley will need to play well again for the Grizzlies to stay in the game. Meanwhile on offense, Montana should be able to move the ball. They were effective against LSU last week and that defense is way scarier than anything Texas Tech will put out there. Texas Tech is coming off a blowout win over FCS Southeast, 55-0.
You can catch the game on WatchESPN.com or listen to the radio broadcast at MontanaGrizzlies.com, the game starts a 6 pm local time.
Recruiting Update
This week the Grizzlies scored their first commit of the year. DE TJ Barr of Port Arthur, TX gave his verbal commitment to Coach Benson. Barr is a 3 Star DE ranked #63 at his postion via ESPNrecruitingnation.com. Mason Kelley of ESPN.com's West Recruiting Blog said this about Barr.
" He is a fast DE, who can get to QB. He won't run through the OL but he will put on a quick move to get around them. At 6'3" 242 Lbs, Barr has good size coming in, he could start for the Grizzlies as a freshman."
Barr chose Montana over TCU, Baylor, Houston and Arkansas.

Yeah. I downloaded Cparrish's Montana team from the NCAA 13 FCS Project in the Teambuilder forum. A big up to those guys. They do a great job and put as much detail into the teams as they can.
