The two most dominant teams of the decade (3 NFC titles in 7 years vs. 3 AFC titles in 6) collide in the 51st Super Bowl. Winners of 17 of their last 18 games since an opening day loss to the Vikings, the Packers are heavy favorites, but with all of the pitfalls they have had to overcome, the Bengals feel they are a team of destiny.

Re: Bungle In The Jungle | M2H's Cincinnati Bengals

SUPER BOWL LI

Who Dey? Not Green Bay!

Aaron Rodgers is now 1-2 in the Super Bowl.

You wouldn’t know it from the 20 points they gave up, but the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense played one of its best games of the season in Super Bowl LI, allowing the Bengals to upset the heavily favored Green Bay Packers, 25-20 to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to the Queen City for the third time in six years. The Packers were only able to convert two of ten third down situations and possessed the pigskin for less than a quarter’s length of time, and if not for a couple of big plays, they may have scored only once. Subtract that pair of big plays from Green Bay’s output, and it had only 148 yard of total offense- over half of its output came from those plays, one of which accounted for 35% of Aaron Rodgers’ passing yards and the the other for 87% of the yards gained by James Starks. Take away Starks’ long touchdown run and he averaged only 1.2 yards per carry, an embarrassing number against a defense which had given up more than its share of 100 yard games during the course of the regular season. It was the kind of defensive performance the Bengals needed to achieve victory at the big dance, because their offense certainly didn’t run up and down the field. Cincinnati was never able to establish a running game and the Packer secondary limited the damage Andy Dalton was able to inflict. A tip of the hat, then, to defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, who’s taken his share of abuse from the Who Dey nation.

One of the aforementioned big plays came on the first one from scrimmage, when Greg Jennings caught a Rodgers pass at the Green Bay 34, made Carrington Byndom miss, and wasn’t stopped until Thomas Finnie knocked him out of bounds at the Cincinnat 1 after a gain of 79 yards. On the next play Vontaze Burfict got backfield penetration to stop Starks for a 2 yard loss, but then Starks scored from 3 yards out. The Packers had scored quickly, and at that point the game looked like it was going to go as many had anticipated it would. The Bengals were, however, able to answer with a 48 yard Matt Green field goal, and they got the game’s next score, which came on a 44 yard Green kick with 10:17 remaining in the half. The following Green Bay series ended with Earl Wolff’s interception at the Green Bay 46, and Cincinnati converted with Dalton’s 9 yard touchdown pass to a diving Jermaine Gresham. At 2:24 before the break, Blake Countess tipped a Dalton pass, which was then bobbled by Eric Reid before it was contained by A.J. Hawk for an interception at the Green Bay 2. Hawk’s return was mostly rubbed out by a clipping call, which left the ball at the 8. An end-around by Jennings was sniffed out for a loss of 3, then the Pack went 5-wide and Rodgers was sacked for a safety by a blitzing Finnie. An exchange of three and outs followed the free kick, but then the Bengals were able to end the half with Green’s 30 yard kick that made the score a surprising 18-7.

At the 3:19 point of the third quarter, Starks took a pitch, reached the corner unmolested, and turned upfield to go 72 yards to the house. A two point conversion would have made it a field goal game, but Green Bat’s attempt was foiled when Rex Burkhead was stopped for no gain. With the score now 18-13 and nothing seen as yet from the Cincinnati offense in the second half, there was talk in the television broadcast booth of this being the “turning point” where the momentum would swing toward the inevitable Green Bay victory. Not so fast, my friends. With 9:11 left in the game, Geno Atkins registered a sack-fumble combo that was nearly disastrous for the Pack until tackle Chima Okoli recovered the ball at the Green Bay 1. That made it 4th down, and Marquise Goodwin’s 12 yard punt return put the ball at the Packer 36. The short field was converted into a 5 yard touchdown run by Cyrus Gray and a 25-13 Cincinnati lead. In the TV booth, the talk turned to how the Packers could still win with a pair of quick touchdowns that St. Aaron was entirely capable of producing- until Green Bay turned the ball over on downs at the Cincinnati 26. The fickle broadcast team then began to get maudlin in discussing “other great upsets in Super Bowl history”. After a three and out by the Bengals, the Packers finally put together a touchdown drive that didn’t depend on a big play, with a 2 yard toss from Rodgers to Chase Hammond with 31 ticks on the clock. Now “It’s not over yet” and “the fat lady hasn’t sung”. At least until the onside kickoff failed, whereupon the obese byotch could warm up her pipes. And so the 2016 Bengals’ remarkable journey, which saw them begin the season 2-4, lose games to the likes of the Bills and the Redskins, and fall behind 24-0 in their wild card game before arriving in Miami, culminated with a giant-slaying that nobody but they believed they could pull off.

“We got the tiger blood. Bengal tiger blood.” - Vontaze Burfict.

Leonard Weaver, perhaps playing in his final game, chugs ahead for
extra yardage after converting a third down.

Earl Wolff intercepts a pass in Packer territory.

Jermaine Gresham scored the game’s first TD with a 9 yard catch.

Thomas Finnie recorded a safety with a sack of Aaron Rodgers.

James Starks’ TD run of 72 yards in the third quarter got the Packers
back in the game at 18-13.

Geno Atkins’ sack-fumble combo dodn’t cause a turnover, but it had the
Packers punting out of their end zone.

Cyrus Gray’s 5 yard TD run with 5:35 to go proved to be the winning score.

Randall Cobb’s full-extension catch set up the game’s final score.

Returning Icons Highlight 2017 Coaching Hires

CARDINALS

If anybody can find the oasis in Arizona's desert, it's Tony Dungy.

The kids are all raised and at 61 Tony Dungy still has a few years of coaching left in him. Are there enough to get the Cards turned around?

CHIEFS

With Chris Beake, the "Pat Shurmur coaching tree" has sprouted its first branch, with ancestry going back through Andy Reid and Mike Holmgren to Bill Walsh. Although Shurmur is effectively his own OC, Beake has been his chief offensive assistant in Cleveland and is the coach most credited for the meteoric rise of Tyler Brosius, and the Chiefs happen to have their 2016 first round pick invetsed in a QB. The former Air Force QB, who earned a civil engineering degree at the acedemy, began his NFL coaching career with the 49ers organization in 1999 nad has worked with Jim Mora in Atlanta and Seattle. His father, John, was the GM of the Broncos from 1984-98 and an assistant coach with the Chiefs from 1968-74 under KC legend Hank Stram.

COWBOYS

Some said it would never happen, but those close to Bill Cowher knew he was merely waiting for a situation which wouldn't be a rebuilding one. The Cowboys went to the playoffs in 2015 and should have last season. The talent is there, and all Jerry Jones had to do was open his checkbook and tell The Chin to name his price.

EAGLES

Mike Pettine

Mike Pettine is one of the primary reasons for any success Rex Ryan has had a s ahead coach, which is two AFC championship appearances with the Jets and the 2015 AFC West title with the Raiders. Although Andrew Lucks' broken arm derailed Oakland's bid to repeat, Pettine's defense helped keep the Raiders competitive. Pettine is a Pennsylvania native whose father is the winningest high school football coach in the history of the Keystone State.

VIKINGS

Ken Flajole

If you're wondering how the 2015 Rams managed to finish 9-7 after Sam Bradford got hurt, look no further than this guy, who had been the DC in St. Louis since 2009. Flajole had 21 years in college coaching before coming to the NFL with the Packers in 1998.

Bengals Re-Sign 7 of 10

In a rare occurrence, the Cincinnati Bengals offered new contracts to all of their potential free agents, which were 10 in number. Seven of them agreed to terms. Those not returning are starting guards Clint Boling and Hugh Thornton and backup QB Ryan Nassib. Boling and the team were too far apart on his value, Thornton was tired of hearing how the Bengals needed an upgrade at his position, and Nassib want to look for a team with a less durable starter than Andy Dalton, who has made 96 consecutive starts since opening day of his rookie season.

Those who re-upped:

LT Andrew Datko
FB Leonard Weaver
WR Stephen Hill
SS Robert Sands
RB Carlos Gray
OLB Dontay Moch
TE Justice Cunningham
