Re: Bungle In The Jungle | M2H's Cincinnati Bengals

Bills Deal Bengals 24-17 Setback

Forget about the 2016 Cincinnati Bengals emulating the Pittsburgh Steelers and going on a long winning streak to finish the regular season at 12-4. Cincy’s streak, such as it was, is already over after a mere two games, thanks to a 24-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. At 4-5, the Bengals are the only team in the AFC North that is under .500.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bengals were the first team on the board with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Andy Dalton to Stephen Hill. The Bills responded with their first touchdown, a 13 yard pass from Landry Jones to some rookie whose dad is Barry Sanders. Buffalo then took a 14-7 lead on Jones’ 12 yard pass to Mohamed Sanu with 2:10 left in the half. Cincinnati’s hurry-up offense generated a 54 yard field goal by Matt Green with 3 ticks to spare.

The second half started with a Cincinnati three and out, but Buffalo’s first series of the half ended with Carrington Byndom’s interception and 10 yard return to the Bills’ 33. The Bengals, however, failed to convert when Green’s 41 yard attempt went wide left. After the miss, the Bills drove to a 21 yard chip shot by rookie Greg Davis. The Bills’ one-touchdown lead lasted the duration of the next Cincinnati series, which was capped by Dalton’s 25 yard screen pass to Michael Dyer. The teams went into the final quarter tied at 17, and neither was able to gain the upper hand until Buffalo drove to Jones’ third touchdown pass, 13 yards to Steve Johnson, with 3:17 to go. Choosing not to leave the Bills a chance for an easy 3 points, the Bengals punted at the two minute warning. They didn’t get the three and out they needed, and the Bills ran out the clock.

Game Notes
Last January's wild card game may have been the last time the Bengals faced Tom Brady- the 39 year old signal-caller is on injured reserve with a torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder and very well may have played his last down. With Brady out, the Pats will be getting an extended look at Mark Myers, and may be able to determine if he's the one the torch will be passed to on a permanent basis. With Brady playing, the teams' two meetings last year were decided by a total of 5 points.

Re: Bungle In The Jungle | M2H's Cincinnati Bengals

Paper Or Plastic?

Bengals Sack Their Way To 29-26 Win Over Pats

It’s probably a safe bet that if Tom Brady was not on injured reserve, the Cincinnati Bengals would be 4-6. There’s no way Brady would let himself get sacked 10 times. But Brady is hurt, and his stand-in, second year man and potential heir apparent Mark Myers, with some help from his o-line and a questionable play call, did give up 10 sacks. The tenth one was the most critical, being the game’s pivotal turning point. In the first half Myers looked like some of Brady has rubbed off on him as the Pats built a 20-0 lead, but the Bengals got off the mat to close the gap to 20-14 before halftime, then scored the second half’s first touchdown to take a 21-20 lead. Cincinnati fell behind again, but the ongoing sack party eventually turned the tide back in their favor.

New England struck in the opening series when a blitz left Chris Fields wide open to catch a 37 yard touchdown pass from Myers. Cincinnati’s first drive was short-lived, ending with an interception by Rasi-I Dowling that was returned 11 yards to the Patriot 35. The Pats reached the 1 before the Bengal defense held to force an 18 yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal. With 9:11 remaining in the half, a 28 yard screen pass from Myers to Stevan Ridley made it 17-zip. The following Cincinnati possession was terminated by Jerod Mayo forcing a DeAndre Hopkins fumble that was recovered by linebacker Julian Miller and taken 14 yards to the New England 44. That turnover was also converted into points, with Gostkowski hitting a 38 yard kick, and it was looking like it was going to be an extremely long afternoon for the Bengals. Cincy finally got on the board with only 1:12 left in the half, with a 2 foot sneak by Andy Dalton on 4th and goal. After a quick three and out by the Pats, Dalton directed the hurry-up offense to his 2 yard TD toss to Jermaine Gresham. What appeared to be a rout in the making a few minutes earlier was now a ballgame again, especially with the Bengals getting the ball first in the second half.

Although the Bengals didn’t score the first time they had the ball in the second half, they did complete the erasure of New England’s 20-0 lead with an 8 yard Michael Dyer run at the 5:06 mark of the third quarter, and they carried that 21-20 lead into the fourth. New England, however, was able to retake the lead with Myers’ 37 yard strike to Wes Welker with 9:42 to go. The try for 2 was snuffed by a Pernell McPhee sack, leaving the score 26-21. Cincinnati responded with a 51 yard Matt Green field goal, and after the kickoff the Pats were backed into a hole. A holding call, a Jamarkus McFarland sack, another holding flag and a short run left the Pats in a 3rd and long at their 6. Leading as they were, and with Myers already having been sacked 9 times, the Pats would have been much better-served to have just run the ball and punted. Instead, a pass was called, and a blitzing Vontaze Burfict took Myers down in the end zone for a safety that tied the score at 26. After the free kick, the Bengals were at their 31 with an even 6 minutes left. At the two minute warning, they were in a third and 5 at the New England 36, and Dalton converted with a 10 yard completion to Mr. Adriel Jeremiah Green. That conversion led to the conclusion of a textbook clock-killing game-winning drive with Matt Green hitting a 24 yard field goal as time expired.

What were they thinking? Vontaze Burfict sacked Myers for a score-tying
safety, and after the free kick the Bengals drove to a walk-off field goal.

Game Notes
The situation is the same as it was when these teams met earlier this year- the Bengals trail the Browns by two games and cant tighten up the NFC North race with a win. To get that win, the Bengals are going to need to cool off Tyler Brosius, who has completed 64% of his passes while throwing for 2,685 yards and 24 TD's against only two interceptions, giving him a 105.6 rating. Brosius' hot hand has caused Greg Little to emerge as a Pro Bowl candidate with 81 catches for 888 yards and a league-leading 11 TD's. The flip side of the passing game's success is a dropoff in production by Peyton Hillis, who is only averaging 3.5 yards per carry with his total of 576 yards, and who did not have a good outing in the last meeting.

Last Week: Bengals 29, Patriots 26 | Browns 37, Bills 21

Last Meeting: 11-6-16 - Bengals 27, Browns 20

Series Record: Bengals lead 48-38

Re: Bungle In The Jungle | M2H's Cincinnati Bengals

Bolden's Fumble Return Lifts Bengals Over
Browns, 20-13

A Cincinnati defense that surrendered 10 points in the Cleveland Browns’ first two possessions ended up carrying the day for the Bengals in a 20-13 win. After their initial success, the Browns were only able to put up 3 more points, and the Bengals scored the final 20 of the game. Cincy intercepted Tyler Brosius twice, sending him home with twice as many picks as he arrived with. A third Brosius turnover led directly to what proved to be the winning score, with Omar Bolden going to the house with a fumble forced by Vontaze Burfict.

Cleveland took the opening kickoff and drove to a 10 yard TD pass from Brosius to fullback Owen Marecic, and a Cincinnati three and out was followed by a 44 yard Grant Ressel field goal. Ressell later made it 13-0 with a 34- yarder nine and half minutes before the break. The Bengals finally got on the board on the play before the two minute warning, on an 82 yard catch and run by Jermaine Gresham, who went 76 yards after the catch. On the first play after the kickoff Nick Toon hauled in a 50 yard pass from Brosius to put the ball at the Cincinnati 30, but on the next play 2016 first round pick Tracy Howard picked off Brosius and returned the ball 8 yards to the 25. It was just the third interception thrown by T-Bro this this season. Unfortunately the rookie corner suffered a lower back strain on the play and had to miss the remainder of the game. Andy Dalton got the hurry-up offense moving, and the half ended with a 41 yard Matt Green field goal.

Green was just wide to the left on a 55 yard try at the 4:14 mark of the third quarter, but the Browns did nothing with the short field, going three and out, and the score was still 13-10 going into the fourth. A 32 yard kick by Green tied the score with 11:11 to go, and the next Cleveland series ended with Burfict sacking Brosius and causing the fumble that was scooped up by Bolden for a 37 yard go-ahead score. From their the Cincy D was able to continue keeping the Browns at bay, and the last gasp for Cleveland came with rookie Thomas Finnie’s interception of a Brosius deep ball at the Cincinnati 10 with 1:12 remaining.
