Hold The Rope - The Era of Brady Hoke

Game - NCAA Football 12
Platform - Xbox 360
Rosters - OS Community Rosters
Sliders - Matt10's Heisman Sliders

Hey everyone! This is my first attempt at a dynasty, so any ideas or comments would be great. I'll be giving you week by week updates on the news that happens with the Maize n' Blue, as well as the top news from around the country. Hope everyone enjoys, and go blue!

The Detroit Free Press - Michigan AD Dave Brandon announced Tuesday that Brady Hoke will be taking over the reigns as the head coach of the football program. Hoke, who led the San Diego Aztecs (9-4) to a win over Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl last season, will take control of one of the most explosive offenses last season. On a lesser note, Hoke will need to transform the defense who, in 2010, finished 110th in the nation. Hopefully under Hoke, one of the nations most prestigious programs will be able to contend again.

Re: Hold The Rope - The Era of Brady Hoke

The Michigan Wolverines football program represents the University of Michigan in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) level. Michigan has the most all-time wins and the highest winning percentage in college football history. The team is known for its distinctive winged helmet, its fight song, its record-breaking attendance figures at Michigan Stadium, and its many rivalries, particularly its annual season-ending game against Ohio State, once voted as ESPN's best sports rivalry.

Michigan began competing in intercollegiate football in 1879. The Wolverines joined the Big Ten Conference at its inception in 1896, when the conference was commonly known as the Western Conference, and have been members since with the exception of a hiatus from 1907 to 1916. Michigan has won or shared 42 league titles, more than any other football program in any conference. Since the inception of the AP Poll in 1936, Michigan has finished in the top 10 a record 37 times. The Wolverines claim 11 national championships, most recently that of the 1997 squad voted atop the final AP Poll.

From 1900 to 1989, Michigan was led by a series of nine head coaches, each of whom have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame either as a player or as a coach. Fielding H. Yost became Michigan's head coach in 1901 and guided his "Point-a-Minute" squads to a streak of 56 games without a defeat spanning from his arrival until the season finale in 1905, including a victory in the 1902 Rose Bowl, the first college football bowl game ever played. Fritz Crisler brought his winged helmet from Princeton University in 1938 and led the 1947 Wolverines to a national title and Michigan's second Rose Bowl win. Bo Schembechler coached the team for 21 seasons (1969–1989) in which he won 13 Big Ten titles and a program-record 194 games. The first decade of his tenure was underscored by a fierce competition with his former mentor, Woody Hayes, whose Ohio State Buckeyes squared off against Schembechler's Wolverines in a stretch of the Michigan – Ohio State rivalry dubbed the "Ten-Year War".

After Schembechler's retirement, his longtime assistants, Gary Moeller and Lloyd Carr, helmed the team for the next 18 years. Michigan continued its success under Moeller and Carr with a winning percentage of .755, eight more Big Ten Conference championships, and a share of the 1997 national title, but the era was punctuated by a number of high-profile defeats for the Wolverines, including a loss to Colorado on Kordell Stewart's iconic Hail Mary pass to Michael Westbrook in 1994, a controversial last-second loss to Michigan State in 2001, and an infamous defeat at the hands of the Football Championship Subdivision Appalachian State Mountaineers in the 2007 season opener. Rich Rodriguez succeeded Carr in 2008 and was fired after three seasons in which he compiled the worst record of any coach in program history. On January 11, 2011, Brady Hoke was hired as Michigan's 19th head football coach.

The Michigan Wolverines have featured 77 players that have garnered consensus selection to the College Football All-America Team. Three Wolverines have won the Heisman Trophy: Tom Harmon in 1940, Desmond Howard in 1991, and Charles Woodson in 1997. Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, started at center and was voted most valuable player by his teammates on the 1934 team.

Re: Hold The Rope - The Era of Brady Hoke

Michigan Stadium was built in 1927 at a cost of $950,000 and had an original capacity of 72,000. Before playing football at the stadium, the Wolverines played on Ferry Field. Michigan Stadium is the largest stadium in the United States with an official capacity of 109,901. The football game attendance often exceeds 111,000 when band members, stadium staff, and others are added. On September 4, 2010, 113,090 attended a game at Michigan Stadium between Michigan and the Connecticut Huskies, setting the modern attendance record in college football history, behind several games with estimated attendance of over 120,000 played in the 1920s at Soldier Field in Chicago. The current NCAA single-season all-time home attendance record was 111,175 per game set in 1999 at the stadium.

Michigan Stadium is the third largest stadium in the world and the 31st largest sports venue including auto racing and horse racing tracks, among others. The one "extra seat" in Michigan Stadium is said to be reserved for former athletic director Fritz Crisler, although its location is not specified. Every home game since November 8, 1975 has drawn a crowd in excess of 100,000, an active streak of more than 200 contests."Football Saturdays" in Ann Arbor have a profound effect on the city, dramatically increasing traffic and business at local establishments. The size of the crowd in the stadium nearly matches the city's population of 114,000.

Michigan Stadium was designed with footings to allow the stadium's capacity to be expanded beyond 100,000. According to the University of Michigan Library's and Athletics Department's history of the stadium, Yost envisioned a day where 150,000 seats would be needed. To keep construction costs low at the time, the decision was made to build a smaller stadium than Yost envisioned but to include the footings for future expansion.

Michigan Stadium is the site of the University of Michigan's main graduation ceremonies; renovations in April 2008 caused that year's ceremony to be moved to the Diag.

On December 11, 2010, the "Cold War II", a Michigan versus Michigan State hockey game, took place at Michigan Stadium. The event was officially called "The Big Chill at the Big House", and over 100,000 tickets had been sold by May 6, 2010, when sales to the general public were stopped. The remaining seats were set aside for students. The attendance for the game was 104,073, smashing the previous record by nearly 25,000.

Michigan's football helmet is surely one of the most instantly recognizable icons in college sports. The famous "winged" design dates from 1938 when Coach Herbert O. "Fritz" Crisler arrived from Princeton to begin a new era in Michigan football. Even as the design and composition of helmets evolved from stitched cowhide to high-tech, molded plastic, the winged design has remained the pre-eminent symbol of Michigan football. Other Michigan athletic teams have adopted the winged design for their own headgear as well.

The distinctive helmet would also have practical advantages on the field. Crisler figured the helmet would help his halfbacks find receivers downfield. "There was a tendency to use different colored helmets just for receivers in those days, but I always thought that would be as helpful for the defense as for the offense," Crisler recalled. [In Crisler's single-wing offense the halfbacks did most of the passing. The quarterback was primarily a blocker or receiver.]

Re: Hold The Rope - The Era of Brady Hoke

Detroit Free Press - The season was the first since the renovation of Michigan Stadium, begun in 2007, was completed. The Wolverines were led by third-year head coach Rich Rodriguez. After its week 10 win against Illinois, Michigan became bowl eligible for the first time since 2007, and later accepted a bid to play in the Gator Bowl against Mississippi State on January 1, 2011, losing 52–14. The Wolverines finished the season sixth out of 120 Division I FBS teams in total offense, 110th in total defense and 112th in passing defense. Michigan finished with an overall record of 7–6, 3–5 in Big Ten play. After the season, head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff were dismissed on January 5, 2011.

Several individual players had standout performances. Quarterback Denard Robinson set several school records, became the first quarterback in college football history to rush and pass for 1,500 yards, and finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting. He surpassed Drew Brees' single-season Big Ten Conference total offense record and the FBS single-season quarterback rushing record. He also won the 2010 Big Ten rushing title, the Chicago Tribune Silver Football for being the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player, and was named the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Year.

Jonas Mouton was the Big Ten's statistical champion in tackles, while Jordan Kovacs finished second. In conference games alone, Roy Roundtree led the conference in receiving yards per game, in part on the strength of a school single-game record 246-yard outing against Illinois. Reserve quarterback Tate Forcier also set a school single-game completion percentage record with a 12-for-12 performance against Bowling Green. The defense also set several records, including most points allowed and yards allowed.

Re: Hold The Rope - The Era of Brady Hoke

Detroit Free Press - Michigan (7-6 SU/3-9 ATS) made a bowl last season, but don’t be fooled. It was a disappointing, even embarrassing season as the Wolverines played no defense while losing 6 of their final 8 games. That included a 37-7 loss to rival Ohio State and a 52-14 bowl loss to Mississippi State. As a consequence, coach Rich Rodriguez was fired. So they have a new style with head coach Brady Hoke and offensive coordinator Al Borges. Ten starters return on offense.

Hoke has had a meteoric rise. An eight-year member of U-M’s defensive coaching staff from 1995-2002, he returns to Ann Arbor after spending eight seasons as head coach at Ball State (2003-08) and San Diego State (2009-10). He is a proponent of a wide-open pro-style/West Coast offense. Last season San Diego State went 9-4 and destroyed Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl, 35-14. Michigan will run three-and four-receiver sets and operate from the shotgun at times.

The offense was No. 13 in the nation with 250 yards rushing per game and 35.2 points and returns junior QB Denard Robinson (18 TDs, 12 INTs, 2,570 yards), an electric playmaker who led the team with 1,702 yards rushing, 6.6 yards per carry. Robinson became the first quarterback in NCAA history to rush and pass for at least 1,500 yards. He will still be the quarterback, but will be asked to throw more under a new system. Michigan led the Big Ten and was eighth in the nation in total yards and was 13th in rushing.

Michigan also is still looking for a running back, and there are plenty of candidates. Hoke said sophomore RB Fitz Toussaint (87 yards) has practiced well, as has sophomore RB Stephen Hopkins (151) and junior RB Mike Cox (56). He also likes 5-foot-6, 180-pound junior RB Vincent Smith, who was second on the team with 601 yards rushing. As far as receivers, Michigan has good depth, led by junior WR Roy Roundtree (team leading 935 yards) and senior WR Darryl Stonum (633), their top two receivers. However, after Stonum was arrested before the 2011 season on DUI charges, it was announced that he would be redshirted for the whole 2011 season. There is good depth with Jeremy Gallon and senior WR Martavious Odoms (241), along with senior tight end Kevin Koger (199 yards).

Defensively, Michigan is moving to a four-man front from the 3-3-5 under defensive coordinator Greg Mattison, who comes over from the Baltimore Ravens. Nine starters are back on ‘D’, led by senior NT Mike Martin. Hoke likes how Craig Roh has performed at rush end and said Jibreel Black also has played well there. He also mentioned Will Campbell, who moved back to the defensive line from offense. The defense was abysmal last season, giving up 35.2 points per game, 108th in the nation.

The Wolverines are on a 0-9 ATS run after getting blasted by rival Ohio State, 37-7 and Mississippi State. They had losses to rival Michigan State (34-17), Iowa (38-28) and Penn State (41-31) with the bad defense doing them in. They had an incredible 67-65 triple OT win at home over Illinois with 676 yards (257 rushing), though the defense allowed 561 yards (315 rushing). Offense is only half the game and the Wolverines play the other half badly, allowing 536 yards (261 rushing) to Michigan State, 383 to Iowa and 435 yards (185 rushing) in a loss at Penn State. That bad defense was on display as Michigan got smoked in the Big House by Wisconsin, 48-24, giving up 558 yards (357 rushing).

Keep an eye on freshman DE Brennen Beyer, Scout.com’s 12th ranked defensive end. The Wolverines finished last in the Big Ten in total defense, scoring defense, and pass defense. Michigan is on a 7-2 run over the total. After starting out with five straight home games, Michigan has to go on the road for four road games in five, including games at Michigan State and at Iowa. They end the year with Nebraska and Ohio State at home. Michigan has lost 9 of the last 10 meetings with the Buckeyes, something that hastened Lloyd Carr’s departure and Rodriguez. Michigan is also 12-12 SU/10-14 ATS their last 24 road games. The offense should still be potent and the defense can’t be any worse, so the Wolverines could surprise and be much improved.
