Volunteers, Gators set to wage SEC war in The Swamp
NCAA News

Nothing makes a Game of the Week better than an old-fashioned rivalry.

The 19th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers travel south this weekend for an important SEC matchup with their rivals and 3rd-ranked Florida Gators. Tennessee was also highlighted in Week 1's Game of the Week matchup, but suffered a letdown on the road at Cal. This week, the Volunteers are hoping to score a major upset over the defending national champions.

Tennessee squeaked out a 10-7 defensive victory over Southern Miss last week, while Florida bulldozed Troy 52-7. The Gators are huge favorites in this SEC opener for both squads --- but can they defend their home turf?

In the end, Florida looks too powerful and too talented. It will be a very even matchup, but playing in the nation's toughest stadium gives the Gators the home-field advantage.

#19 Tennessee stuns #3 Florida in 3OT thanks to missed FG
NCAA News

The Swamp was silenced.

Florida kicker Joey Ijjas missed a field goal in the third overtime, allowing the 19th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers to steal a 41-38 upset over the 3rd-ranked Gators. Florida led 28-13 with just over 12 minutes left, but Tennessee rallied back behind the play of backup QB Jonathan Crompton to tie the game at 28. The teams traded TDs in the 1st OT and field goals in the 2nd, but Ijjas' miss didn't match Tennessee's score, giving the Volunteers the win.

The momentum shifts in this game were huge, with several distinct periods of change. In the 1st half, it was all Tennessee following Florida's opening TD. QB Erik Ainge fired a TD pass and captained two drives that ended in field goals, giving Tennessee a 13-7 halftime advantage.

In the 2nd half, it was all Florida from the start. QB Tim Tebow threw a TD pass, sophomore MLB Brandon Spikes returned a fumble 42 yards for a score and RB Kestahn Moore scored on a 1-yard TD plunge to put the Gators up 28-13.

Unfortunately for Florida, the game was far from over. Crompton entered for Ainge, who left the game with an injury early in the 2nd half. Crompton threw 2 TD passes to lead Tennessee's comeback charge, tying the game at 28 and sending it into OT.

In the 1st OT, Crompton threw his 3rd TD pass while Tebow countered with a 6-yard TD run for Florida. The 2nd OT saw both teams trade field goals, and the Volunteers got another 3-pointer to open the 3rd OT. Florida stalled on their attempt and lined up for the game-tying kick. Ijjas' pushed the kick too far right and the win belonged to the Volunteers.

Ainge threw for 241 yards and a TD before leaving, while Crompton compiled 109 yards and 3 TDs in a short amount of time. It was Tennessee's tailbacks that did the most damage, as Arian Foster had 211 total yards (83 rush) and a TD catch, while LaMarcus Coker caught the game-tying TD in the 4th and the TD catch in the 1st OT.

As for Florida, Tebow threw for 165 yards and a TD on 22-of-44 passing but was picked off once. He also added 11 yards rushing and his TD run in the 1st OT. RB Chevron Walker led all rushers with 99 yards and the game's first TD.

#12 Penn State, top-ranked Michigan to open Big Ten play with huge matchup
NCAA News

What a way to kick off the start of Big Ten conference play.

The 12th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions travel to Ann Arbor this weekend to take on the top-ranked Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten opener for both teams. This Game of the Week matchup is only one of 3 nationally-broadcasted Big Ten games this weekend.

Penn State opened the season by crushing lowly FIU in Week 1, Buffalo last week and held off Notre Dame in Week 2. The Wolverines dominated Appalachian State to open the year, followed by wins over a tough Oregon team on the road and dominated the Fighting Irish last weekend. Finally, these 3-0 teams will meet looking to make a statement to the rest of the Big Ten.

Michigan opened the year ranked #2 in the Preseason Coaches Poll but jumped past USC into the #1 spot after beating Oregon 21-16 in Week 2. The Wolverines have a talented offense, led by Heisman candidate RB Mike Hart. Hart has already rushed for 500 yards and 8 TDs in the first 3 weeks, but will face a ferocious Penn State defense. Hart should get help from a solid passing attack captained by QB Chad Henne.

Michigan's defense is tough too, but they will have to slow Penn State's balanced attack to win in the Big House. The Nittany Lions have a bunch of good tailbacks like RB Austin Scott and a senior QB in Anthony Morelli.

This game should be a close one, but Michigan is top-ranked and playing at home. I can't see them losing in the Big House.

#1 Michigan defends home turf behind Henne's 4 TD passes
NCAA News

The top-ranked Michigan Wolverines scored 21 unanswered points in a span of about 9 minutes to overcome a 10-point deficit and defeat the visiting 12th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, 35-32. Penn State grabbed the lead early in the 2nd quarter and held it for a long period of time, but their defense fell apart in the 2nd half and couldn't contain Michigan's passing attack.

Michigan QB Chad Henne threw 2 TDs in the 1st half, but Penn State still led 17-14 at the half. Penn State QB Anthony Morelli tossed his 2nd TD of the day midway through the 2rd quarter to extend their lead to 24-14, but it was the last time they would lead.

Michigan RB Mike Hart scored on a 1-yard plunge and Henne tossed two more TDs to put Michigan up for good at 35-24. Penn State scored again with 1:35 to go and converted the ensuing 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 3, but they couldn't recover the onside kick.

Henne threw for 266 yards and 4 TDs on 20-of-37 passing and was picked off once. Hart led all rushers with 96 yards and a TD, and also added 47 yards receiving and a 4-yard TD catch. WRs Mario Manningham, Antonio Bass and TE Mike Massey each caught TDs as well.

Morelli paced the Penn State offense with 205 yards and 2 TDs on 17-of-30 passing. RB Austin Scott added 87 yards rushing and 2 TDs.
