Big Benn Strikes Twice in Rivalry Win Over Mizzou

The season opener is one to remember for the Fighting Illini as they escape Missouri with a 27-24 win in The Arch Rivalry. Even though Illinois' SR QB Juice Williams committed three turnovers by way of interceptions, he went on to toss three touchdowns, two of which went to All-American WR Aurelius Benn. The defense was just decent, but the offense also left them in some sticky situations with the INTs. With a three point lead, Illinois couldn't get a first down to continue to burn clock and had to punt with a little over a minute remaining. Backed up on their 5-yard line and on 4th down, Missouri's Gabbard completes a big gainer down to their 40-yard line. A couple clutch passes later, the Missouri Tigers spike the ball the Illini's 28-yard line, setting up a possible game-tying field goal. After icing the kicker, the kick was up and.... NO GOOD! WIDE LEFT!

Re: Illinois Fighting Iliini (NCAA 10)

Recruiting Round-Up: Only Three Targets In-State

There are 19 players on Illinois' recruiting board and only three of them are from their home state, including their #1 target. Defensive end Andrew Carey (3*, 6'5", 250 lbs.) hails from Alsip, IL and could find himself playing some meaningful minutes right away in Champaign, if he decides to join the team that is. The coaching staff would rather see Carey come in and learn from the upper-classmen first, but that luxury may not be around in 2010 at the defensive end positions.

Continuing their development on the defensive side of the ball, hard-hitting strong safety Brandon Coleman (3*, 6'1", 211 lbs.) out of Quincy, IL is being pursued heavily by coach Ron Zook. The kid has good speed and can lay the lumber to any receiver that's not paying attention. He's not going to man-up on the other team's #1 WR by any stretch of the imagination, but plays a good center field.

And the "cream" of Illinois' recruiting board crop is.... a punter? Justin McCoy (4*) from Elgin, IL is the highest rated recruit being targeted by the Fighting Illini. The kid has got a good boot and, for what it's worth, has some decent wheels (4.62 40 time) for a punter. When asked, an anonymous coach of the program said "Just as if they were on your team, we don't talk about any players that use their feet more than their hands".
