BAGM & The Flaws of the Sim Engine

I know NHL 13's right around the corner, so this may be the perfect time to vent a bit. Now, I'm in the 7th year of my BAGM; started with the Flyers, now with the Lightning. When I first took over the team, they were coming off a like 32 win season, and the goal was to get 37.

I got 37 wins that season, then I believe 43 in the second season, but dipped the second season to 35 wins.

I'm in my 4th and final year of the contract with the Lightning now. 37 wins is the goal, again and I must make the playoffs. This year my roster's stacked. Stamkos, Pheanuff, Hedman, Dubnyk in net (85 OVR), Tadeas Galansky in backup (85 OVR, still has potential) and some solidly developed young talent. Team ratings: offense = 100 defense = 100 goalies = 79.

Now, it's the trade deadline and our record's about 28-38-0. This makes no sense to me, as this team isn't the rebuilding team it was when I first took over. It's talented and still developing. I think the sim engine in BAGM mode is still recognizing the Lightning as a "rebuilding" team, despite the players on the roster.

I should also note that some of the goals against averages for star goaltenders with high rating e.g. Jonas Hiller, Tuuka Rask and Cory Shneider are4 between 2.90-3.30. This is horrible. GAA's were improved..but there was way too many goals.

What astounds me most is if my team has a 100 defense rating, why on earth is Dubnyk's GAA hovering around 3.40? I really hope issues like this have been addressed for NHL 13...

Judging by this, I really hope the trade AI was fixed, along with the players' ratings being way more spread out. No team should really have 100 offense and 100 defense. It should be impossible to build a team like that. And the fact that Dubnyk is an 85 makes me sick. He should never, and will never, be that good.

Funny reading about what you said for the goalie stats.

I'm just done playing the 82 games of a junior team. No players had more than 78 points (for the QMJHL, it's a shame, there's always guys getting 100 points a year).

For the goalies, it was even worse. The best GAA was 2.92 (which makes no sense with the low scoring overall) and the best SV% was .892.

There some things that don't work out for the CHL as far stats goes. I understand that it's junior and you have players between 58 and 72 overall, but for crying out loud, 78 points for the best scorer, there's something wrong.

Hope NHL 13 come out with a better logic overall, in both GM mode and BaP.

Seeing stats like that worry me, because I thought things would improve with low OVRs of players. Posting some tidbits from my BAGM shortly..

I'm in the mode now, 3 games after the trade deadline (March 11, 2018) here are some highlights:

Points Leaders
Zach Parise - 96
Tyler Ennis - 94
John Tavares - 92
Matt Duchene - 91
Jason Pominville - 90
Sidney Crosby - 87
Ilya Kovalchuk - 87
Jonathon Toews - 86

GAA Leaders
Pekka Rinne - 2.22
Henrik Lundqqvist - 2.26
Semyon Varlamov - 2.36
Jonathon Quick - 2.54
Kari Lehtonen - 2.56
Ondrej Pavelec - 2.58
Cam Ward - 2.67
Tuuka Rask - 2.69

2.50 is an average goalie's GAA in the NHL, but that's the GAA of the 3rd best goalie in the league in NHL 13, which is alarming.

The point totals are also rather high. The scary thing is that quite a few teams have ratings of 100.

Anaheim - 100 offense, 91 OVR, 36-23-6
Boston - 100 offense, 93 OVR, 36-26-5
Buffalo - 100 offense, 93 OVR, 42-24-4
Calgary - 100 defense, 92 OVR, 25-37-4
Carolina - 100 offense, 85 OVR, 34-28-6
Chicago - 100 defense, 99 offense, 93 OVR, 27-30-10
Colorado - 99 offense, 99 defense, 93 OVR, 43-22-6
Columbus - 100 offfense, 89 OVR, 32-31-7
Dallas - 97 offense, 92 OVR, 35-30-5
Detroit - 100 offense, 81 OVR, 38-25-5
Edmonton - 100 offense, 89 OVR, 33-27-6
Los Angelas - 100 defense, 100 goaltending, 41-19-7
Minesota - 99 offense, 88 OVR, 23-38-5
Montreal - 97 offense, 98 defense, 100 goaltending, 97 OVR, 34-29-5

And the scariest one of alll...
New York Rangers - 100 offense, 100 defense, 100 goaltending, 100 OVR, 37-29-2

It's not only the AI trade logic either, progression of players played a factor aswell.

Re: BAGM & The Flaws of the Sim Engine

I'm deffinately starting a new BAGM now. Any suggestions as to which team to pick, roster adjustments etc? I'm fairly certain I used the Ultimate rosters last time.

SOOO true. This is in my stickied thread for the BaGM wishlist. Players progress WAY too fast. There are like 100 superstars in the league after about 3 years.

EXACTLY! Serriously, it's terrible, as you can see by my above team ratings, it just literally broke my BAGM. Ironically, I remember back in NHL 09 where rookies never progressed. We asked for this to be addressed, and boy, I think we bit off a little more than we could chew.

I know Filip Forsberg is a highly touted prospect, but at around 24/25, he already has a 93 OVR. That's a bit scary, since Steven Stamkos's OVR's around 95 at age 29.

this is one of the things that bothered me after playing 3 seasons (incl. playoffs total of about 20 games simmed) and somewhere in the 4th season i noticed some teams have reached 100 ratings on either offense or defense.

i dont know if EA anticipate on this...or if they even care. because every year they release new product (supposed to be an improved version of the previous) and by the time you play your 8th season a new version comes up. so there's a high probability they will not address this issue of programming (just my guess about the programming).
