EA Sports NHL>I miss speed burst.
Taku 01:44 PM 10-27-2009
After playing NHL10 and NHL2K10 for several weeks now i've come to conclusion that if there's one thing that NHL10's gameplay needs its the sprinting or speed bursting.

Right now the skating in NHL10 is like "stuck on 3rd gear" all the time and because of that there's no realistic rushing situations in game at all. Don't get me wrong, im not trying to bash the game, the skating engine is decent right now. But i think the game would be much better with an ability to skate hard, like in real hockey. [Reply]

Well we can push the puck up when we have open space. That is a more realistic implementation of a speed burst. I guess there could be another speed burst to get around a defender though. [Reply]

Speed burst is terrible, the way NHL10 does it (pressing LT/L2 to push the puck forward when you have an open lane) is great.

They could use some more animations, though. [Reply]

I like having the option to push the puck. The only problem I have is that I can't seem to find time to use it. If and when I try the puck is almost always taken away, so I rarely even try.

I think the real purpose of it is to avoid getting caught from behind once you're past the last defender. For example, if you poke the puck away from the pointman on the PP and have a clear breakaway from center ice. It'll give you an extra step or two if you time it right to make your move on the goalie.

Only occasionally will it work coming down the wing, usually when you have a lot of space or if the defender takes a bad angle. Defenders seem to get a little boost of their own if you use it when they have an angle on you or if you're side-by-side. If this is indeed the case, I assume it was designed this way to keep it from being abused.

As for re-introducing a more traditional speed burst, I'm against it. I mostly like the system now, but I wish there was a little more sensitivity & differentiation with the analog input in relation to how hard the player skates. Right now it's a little too all or nothing... [Reply]

I'm glad EA's gone away from mashing a speed button all the time. [Reply]

Maybe not a traditional speed burst...but even with the push the puck.....Simon Gagne should not be getting caught from behind by just about everyone if I poke the puck away.
I'm skating up.....poke check...the opposing player is skating down ice....loses the puck...yet somehow we are both "magically" less than one step from each other the entire way down the ice?
No way.
Maybe just a quick one or two step jump instead of an actual speed burst....but as it is now....there is just too much speed for the lower end players. IMO of course.

This really has nothing to do with a speed burst button but more so the fact that there's hardly any separation between player ratings. Too many players have abnormally high speed/accel ratings. EA really needs to step back and take a look at how they do them, they desperately need an overhaul. [Reply]
