NHL 10 and NHL 2K10 Reviews (Reviews on the Run)

Reviews on the Runs gave NHL 10 a 9.5 and a 9. NHL 2K10 recieved an 8.5 and a 7.5 Both games got solid scores obviously they preffered NHL 10.

They said the graphics in NHL 10 were superior and the sound was slighty better (better soundtrack and better commentary). Gameplay was also won by NHL 10, they thought NHL 2K10 felt dated and the magnetic pucks were annoying.

There isn't going to be one. I'm sold it's because releasing a demo would reduce sales since people would see how mediocre the game is. Smart if you ask me.

I dunno; EA released a 2010 demo without worrying about that.

Picking up both. I don't need someone else to tell me which game is better or worse, I'll judge that myself.

With that being said, I enjoyed the 10 demo and probably will enjoy the actual game as well. Hardcore mode and manual passing sold the game for me. If it weren't for that feature I would have passed this year despite the addition of Be A GM.

2K10 is much more unpredictable since no one really knows what the game's like. If it's a step BACKWARD for the series like MLB 2K8 (which also received virtually zero pre-release buzz) then I may as well just stick to playing my copies of 2K3 and 2K5...again...

I think both games should have a lot of good and bad things going for them again this year, so if anything it should provide us with enough variety to last us until next offseason, in which EA Sports finally adds a Maddenesque TV styled presentation to its hockey franchise......yes?

just curious, aside from presentation, what don't you like about NHL 10? (gameplay wise perhaps?)

Akula, there are still "money goals" according to the demo impressions thread, despite everything we've heard from the developers about their removal. The same 3-5 cutscenes we've seen since 08 are repeated during every stoppage after the obligatory slo-mo replay. Tape-to-tape passing (although Hardcore Mode/Manual Passing redeems this). Bland atmosphere (although the amazing towel-waving crowds in the demo changed this). The annoying "wrong last name glitch" in past Dynasty Modes (hopefully Be A GM fixes this once and for all with its custom draft classes). That's not to say I don't like NHL, though. It's just that I spent a lot of time on NHL 08 a few years ago, probably played it more than any hockey game I've played since NHL 2000 in the beginning of the decade, and 09 didn't click with me as much as I thought it would pre-release. It didn't provide me with a new outlook on the gameplay...it seemed like "08 with a few tweaks", so that's why I wasn't too fond of the gameplay experience last year and switched back and forth with 2K9 throughout the year, playing the heck out of one game, getting bored, switching to the other...but NHL 10's Hardcore Mode changes this for me. I haven't been this excited to play an EA hockey title since I picked up 08 two years ago.

I may post on the 2K forums more often but I'm no fanboy of the series by any means. I like many aspects of their game (what's so wrong about that?) but there's no question they have to eliminate all the silliness surrounding their title ASAP. Questionable marketing and development decisions have plagued the franchise since 2K5. Visual Concepts definitely has the talent to turn the ship around but there's no question that the series may be on its last leg in the next few years if they don't turn it around quickly.
