But in the end this thread is why online gaming is going down the tubes. Find whatever cheap, exploiting, cheating, chessy , way to win.
Commited gamers still can enjoy the game.

In the article Patrick just explains that he is competitive and wants to be the best NHL 09 player. He says that he uses his hockey knowledge and game skill to win games.

This works until a certain point, at which other players might rely on AI deficiencies to beat him. At that time, as a competitor, you must adapt by learning how to do some of the "tricks" yourself and then learn how they can be stopped.

If two players in the top 10 are facing off, they will both know all the exploits already. If one player has more knowledge of real hockey it will be an advantage.

If you can beat someone by playing all-sim, then go ahead and do it, it is always more impressive. If cheese is necessary to beat another cheeser then I think it is a legit tactic.

Re: My Quest to be the Best Online in NHL 09

You canīt be NR 1 without cheating/glitching, firstly top 500 is all about the cheese moves. And secondly NHL09 is so flawed when it comes to interference and the top 500 abuse this on D, that along with the insane stick lifts craze. But the constant checks before you even are close to the puck is ruining the gameplay. But only top 500 abuse it on every chance they can. Add to that the wrappers (easy to do), the break away reversal move, the slapper L-move, the dump in close crease etc.

Playing top 500 is horrible and aint hockey. Anyhow I am 1600 and at that level there is still fair play. On top 500 is a joke, itīs a glitchfest.

But one thing for EA, ffs add some good interference calls, the game is ruined with the bumper car checks on passes. And hammering the stick lift 500 times a game shouldnīt be a good D move.

Bravo. Good article. I myself don't play online, or even play NHL 09 for that matter, but I can appreciate the fact that you can objectively look at the tactics necessary to accomplish what you set out to do.

Good Luck.

NHL09 has a ranking system when playing online and its really a disadvantage to new players to the game. Just say someone who has been playing online since the game came out and they have a online rank of, lets say 3.
And someone who has been playing the NHL series since the early days of Sega and they just get NHL 09 and start playing online, well their online rank is lower but they are pretty good players. The online rank system is going to give the advantage to the higher rank, witch in MHO is unfair.

People who play against two opponents are just asking to get whooped. On the flip side if your 2 players vs. 1 you should never lose. Player Lock and playing the wings combined with the computers AI you shoud dominate the game easily.

I never play any one with a guest...i only play opponents using play now. I use teams in Alpabetical order starting with Anaheim and Atlanta all the way down to Washington.

If i was one of top 3 or 5 NHL teams every time my record would be way better....but i don't cheese, enjoy a challenge and occaisonally pull off a big upset!

Beat Detroit last night 2-1 as Phoenix....choosing teams alpabetically gets you some wild matchups too which is fun.

I've made two names now....my orginally guy over 400 wins 160 losses 30 or so losses in OT.

My new name, just for fun (alternate ID to be left alone from friends on PSN),

I'm 20-4-1 lost in a shootout. Same way of choosing teams alphabetically.

Hoping the news on a recent patch takes away a few money goals and adds some interference calls.

Leaderboards are for losers....I enjoy checking out my stats and all but in the end could care less about where I stand in the world of cheats and glitches.....

I play a clean fun high forechecking game. NHL is a good stress releiver for me..so trying to be #1 would involve cheating, glitching and playing 14 hours a day...yawn!

Re: My Quest to be the Best Online in NHL 09

Thanks for enjoying the article gents. I think I may continue with updates on how it is going with future installments. I was worried the reception this kind of article would get since I know most of us here are more sim gamers. I myself am straight sim even when I am playing my friends or the cpu by myself. We have unspoken rules about punting on 4th downs and running up scores etc. Yet this game online is totally opposite at times.

So I guess knowing about what it is like in the top is still interesting even if it is not for everyone. It is a dark and dirty world lol. And just a recent update I have made it up to 112 before losing and getting knocked back to 126. And I have enough to write a follow up now with some stories that might be of interest. I really don't think I will get to be #1, but I think I am among the best and if I can learn some more tricks I might have a shot. The thing is do I want to go down that road?

What do you get out of being ranked #1 if you do not like to cheese yet cheese is the only way to go in the top 500? It seems to me that you dont enjoy the tactics you have to use to be the 'best', so why do it?

yeah. I played a real good game with one guy just now and it was tied 1-1 so we went to shootout. First thing he does in shootout is skate from one side of the net to the slot and does a slapshot and scores. Then next goal he hits lb then when the goalie goes down releases it then backhands it in. I just quit. It pretty much ruined a good game. This game wasn't even ranked so I don't get why someone would want to ruin a good game like that.
