I solved the mystery -- It's the World Juniors update that fuxored it up. The person who did the WJ teams punted all the players from the world teams into the free agent pool, instead of chucking them into a couple of fake teams or something.
So beware the WJ update making your future season/dynasty rosters all horribly wrong!

yes only use world junior in exibiton or set up a tournament
