Idiots Guide to Manager Mode?

I'm new to soccer and don't understand basically anything about how the manager mode works? Can anyone break down the transfer process to me and just in general how things work in the premier league....

Re: Idiots Guide to Manager Mode?

I'll try my best to help...

Typically in american sports players are "traded" between teams but little cash changes hand. In the world of football/soccer however, players are transfered between teams for cash regularly.

When you see a player that you want who plays for another team you typically have to make a proposal that involves two fees - the "transfer fee", which is the money you pay to the his current club in order to have him move to your team, and his wage, which is what you negotiate to pay him on a weekly/daily basis to play for you (typically players being transferred will want a wage rise over their current contract!). Generally speaking their are usually "signing-on fees" that clubs pay to players as well (akin to a signing bonus in American sports) but FIFA doesn't take those into account in the game.

If you have any more specific questions, myself or another poster would be happy to try and answer them

Just to add to that - there are only 2 times during the year that a "transfer" or "trade" can happen. These are called Transfer windows. One is after the FA Cup Final through the end of August. The other is the month of January. You can only transfer players during this time.

Re: Idiots Guide to Manager Mode?

Thanks for the help, i'll assume that the length the player stays with you is determined in the contract?

This holds true for Free Agents in FIFA 10 too, in MM you can only sign FAs during the transfer windows (in real life FAs can sign with a club any time). Scouting for new talent however can be undertaken at any point in the season, i think.

To view Free Agents go to the Transfer section, hit Y and select "Detailed Search". Then go down to Player Status and set that option to "Free Agents" then press A to search. Controls here are for the 360 version.

Free agents are ideal to add depth to your squad if you are playing with a weaker team with a low budget, as you do not have to pay a transfer fee.
