More Realism Thread (Sliders) - Custom Tactics

Early findings.

I've been playing around with this tonight because some of the smaller teams while they aren't that good, do a few things too well. And big teams don't do things well enough.

So for ultimate realism here's my early sliders.

My settings.
Everything on manual except passing that's on semi.

This is your personal choice but if you are an experience FIFA player you might want to start on all manual and have a few on assist/semi. The reason is that FIFA really opens up when you take the game of assists.

Formation
You must set almost all the players to a high offense work rate and a high defense rate.

CBs - high defense / low offense
1 ST/CF high offense / low or medium defense

The rest are set to high /high.

My early findings is that this helps to push of defense defenders into the attack and also brings more men in defense. Doesn't seem like much but both teams can get some really nice counter attacks.

Custom Tactics

This is just from early impressions on what they do. FIFA 10 custom tactics have more of an effect this year. I don't have your typical "madden" sliders. Instead I have some general guidelines one a few sliders that have to be maxed out.

Build Up
Speed - Team/match specific
Passing - Team/match specific
Positioning - Free Foam - I think this is a must and it helps for non strikers to get into the play

Chance Creation
Passing - 100 - helps to increase AI taking chances and making bad passes at the same time
Crossing - WIP
Shooting - WIP
Positioning - Free Form - helps to bring in defenders into play.

Defense
Pressure - 1*
Agression - 1*
Width - WIP
Def. Line - Cover
* You're probably thinking what the F, that doesn't seem realistic. Well it's still early and I think pressure and aggression should be different. But this is an experiment phase and having it at 1 helps to not have the defense run at you. Torquay is not going to run at Man U. Now I thought this would make the AI passive. Do this test, take a 5-star team against the lowest ranked team you can find. Then take that same 5-star team against another top club. Notice how the AI will contain you, call for help, contract, but it will still come out to mark you. I found this surprising.

We aren't going to have a perfect game but I think FIFA 10 will turn this into a dynamic game because of custom tactics and formations turn. In other words, you could set up a different, yet realistic, set-up before every match to allow for team styles, home/away style, 10-men behind the ball for bad teams and so forth.

looking forward to seeing where this goes... unless EA can pony up and fix the style of play of all the teams, I'll be looking to edit many of them manually.

After some extensive testing this week, I think I've figured some stuff out.

Pressure and aggression. There should be two penalties if the AI team has this on high, being exposed and getting tired. I wasn't looking to see if I get more effective as the game wore on. However, to test I did a lot of 5-star teams against half star teams.

I set pressure and aggression to high, and you should be able to score a ton of goals this way.

Now when you play with high pressure and aggression against a 5-star team, I think they are far too good. They basically turn into robo team. They should be exposed as well, and they are but they are just too good and don't leave enough space, while also being able to run at your players.

But I think I can start to create some tactics...

Here's the thing, I don't want Hull City to have one tactic. Hull City will play differently versus Man U then Wigan. They might also have a different mentality home versus away and the tactics allow for this.

How the tactics allow that home/away difference? I can see for the user team, BUT if i play against Hull City they wonīt change the tactic according to the ones you set. Itīs one tactic for team only. However, cpu DOES change tactics during game if winning or losing. BUT, not something you can control....

FIFA allows you to edit the CPU tactics. You have to switch controls over.
