Dude, c'mon, just because one guy can actually tackle doesn't mean all of them should be able to. Of course they're going to be exceptions. They're quite a few defenders that are quite technical with the ball. Does that mean they should be able to dribble like Ronaldo?

The fact that you selectively read is part of the problem. I said that big strikers are too good taking the ball away. But defenders are probably worse at playing offense than strikers are playing defense.
How many times do you see Rooney and Berbatov come back and help out on defense. There have been a bunch of times where I saw Bellemy and Tevez harass defenders into making mistakes. The problem you have is that the game isn't perfect.
The other thing is that it's not a sure thing that strikers can get the ball off the defenders. If it was an exploit, then yes it would be a problem. Sometimes you can pick the pocket of a defender but only once in a while. It doesn't happen every game and it doesn't happen too often when defenders have a strong position. Most of the time, I see it when it's close to a 50/50 ball on the ground. Like right after a pass where the defender doesn't quite have possession.
All I have to say is don't mess around with the ball in the backfield. Though any good manager in real life will tell you that.

How do you figure defenders are worse at playing offense than offensive players are playing defense. Have any statistical proof?
Thats an opinion not a fact. If you watch soccer you would know that defenders do a lot more than just clear the ball out. They can actually pass out from the back.
Anyway, thats it for me in this thread. I should've got out when P2K did.

There are two things going on here. First, Tackle ratings for Forwards are too high in some instances. But the bigger issue IMO has to do with Strength and Balance ratings, and how they interact with the game engine. Simply put, there's an imbalance in the way those ratings translate in-game.
For example, I have two 5' 7" defenders on my team, and they tackle/knock much larger players off the ball with ease. The specific problem is smaller players like that are still rated in the 70s and 80s in both Strength and Balance. So they're just as capable of tackling/knocking over a much larger player, and often just as capable of maintaining balance and ball possession when a larger player challenges them.
I just finished editing Strength and Balance ratings for a bunch of players based on a ratings system that takes their size and weight into account. But again, because of the imbalance in the game engine, one only sees a real difference in players' strength and balance when ratings are lowered/raised to extremes, and scaled in a much different way than they currently are. General example (doesn't apply to every player):
5' 7" player (meaning the smallest players in the game) would get a Strength rating of 1
5' 8" player = Strength rating of 7
5' 9" player = Strength rating of 18
5' 10" player = Strength rating of 27
5' 11" player = Strength rating of 40
6' 0" player = Strength rating of 54
6' 1" player = Strength rating of 70
6' 2" player = Strength rating of 85
6' 3" player = Strength rating of 99
Also:
140 lb player = Balance rating of 1
150 lb player = Balance rating of 12
160 lb player = Balance rating of 28
170 lb player = Balance rating of 45
180 lb player = Balance rating of 63
190 lb player = Balance rating of 80
200 lb player = Balance rating of 99

Bluchampblogger was the guru on the EA FIFA forum who came up with the slider edits. I think he opted for PES 2010, so I seriously doubt he will do any extensive tweaks for FIFA 10.

Regarding tackling: Plus it makes all the difference in the world if you're playing on Pro versus World Class. I play on Pro, and I've had to set the Strength, Balance and Tackle ratings of my team's players much lower than CPU teams' players. Otherwise I could field a team of midgets and still strip the ball away from the CPU all game long.

Yeah, I remember him. Then this year he came in here (as well as on EA's forum) and bashed the ever-loving-**** out of FIFA 10.

I just noticed this last night. Playing on the higher difficulties REALLY changes the game. I've always been afraid of World Class and Legendary because I struggle on Semi-Pro and Professional quite a bit. But for the heck of it, last night I tried a couple games. Won my first game on World Class 2-0. Lost my first game on Legendary 0-5 but came back with a level head only to lose 0-1 on the next one.
What I realized is that this game is much different than other sports titles in regards to difficulty. Sure, there still seem to be a couple things that make you scratch your head, but the positive outweighs the negative. My observations on the higher difficulties below:
1. Less pressing. The CPU still presses you, but it seems to make more sense. If you can effectively pass the ball around for a bit and they don't get it, they'll back off.
2. Smarter runs by teammates. I'm constantly cursing Deco in this game because he's worthless. He'll pass the ball off from mid-field and then retreat on the lower difficulties. On Legendary last night, he was like a different player. Initiating brilliant 1-2's, sending amazing crosses into the box. He also seemed to have better control of the ball. In short, he played smarter.
3. Defense seemed a bit sketchy. There were a few times where it felt like my defenders wouldn't contest a cross into the box and a goal would be scored off a header. Replays would show that my timing was just off. The pace on Legendary seems to be a bit faster, so I think that is part of the feeling I was getting.
4. Goalkeepers are on their game. I remember all the videos they showed of the new GK AI - getting up after a dive to make a second save attempt, etc. I saw more of this on Legendary than I have at any other time. These guys were reacting as they should - at times frantic - to get the ball out of the area. They were aggressive.
5. Flow. The best improvement on the higher difficulties is flow. The game just moves from end-to-end so well. Never a dull moment. You can still take the time to pass the ball in the back to form your attack, but once you get it going, it just seems to run better. I think part of this is just because your teammates seem to be playing smarter.
I for one am going to be trying more games on Legendary and comparing them to lower difficulties. Something to pass the time until the squad fix comes so I can start my MM!

I noticed a big difference in teammate AI playing BAP from professional to world class. On pro, my teammates were of no use to the point where pro was harder than world class. I was trying to play a team game, so perhaps if you're looking to dominate individually it wouldn't matter as much. It was more of the same playing a regular game against the CPU on pro. I was surprised I couldn't get much going on pro in that game, despite a huge possession advantage and little to no attacking threat from the AI. But I like to play the free-flowing passing style, so I need guys to make smart runs and support the ball, which were noticeably less apparent.
I can't speak for legendary, as I haven't ventured that far despite some of the good things said about it thus far. Maybe it's worth a shot, even if I'm clawing for wins on world class...

I tried Legendary last night. Only played one match so keep in mind the small sample size. The CPU played way over their ratings. First half they outshot me 13-2 and dominated possession 55-45.
Mind you I played a good 5 years of MM on Legendary in '09 but to me it's the same thing with all of EA games when you jack up the difficulty. Ratings mean nothing. Instead of playing smarter and playing towards their strengths MFs with poor passing ratings suddenly turn into Cesc/Gerrard clones, every attacker is Drogba, and keepers are tough to beat.
I have been primarly playing this game online vs randoms so I haven't gotten the chance to play the CPU too much (waiting on the tactic tweakings to start a MM) so take my impressions for what they're worth.
It's really a shame that my 2 favorite EA games (NCAA & FIFA) get released with such terrible out of the box player ratings& club tactics. It's like they don't realize that it has a HUGE impact on gameplay. The communities for these games are too big to not take adavantage of. If it's a resource issue (which it shouldn't be for FIFA but I can understand NCAA) use us for custom tactics. The fact that EA reached out after the game was released is OK but it could have been prevented with a simple, "Help us create club tactics" thread. The community wouldn't frown upon EA asking for help one bit.
