Friday, June 9th, 1905: Injury Takes Toll, Chesbro Out
New York fans will be disappointed to learn that Jack Chesbro developed a strained rotator cuff muscle while throwing the ball in today's game. After the doctor informed the New York Highlanders manager that Chesbro was expected to miss 7-8 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the starting pitcher could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

So far this season Chesbro has a 6-5 record with a 2.42 ERA

Saturday June 10,1905

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Coming off of his worst performance of the year, the A's Chief Bender pitched a dominating 5 hit shutout to lead his team past a game Detroit team 3-0.The Tigers also got terriffic pitching from Frank Kitson who allowed just 5 hits, problem was though one was a solo home run by Schoolboy Knight who's now hit two home runs in limited action and another a 2 run single by Bris Lord which when combined gives you the difference in today's ballgame.Bender's record now stands at 9-4 while Kitson falls to 7-5.Here's the box score.

Saturday, June 10th, 1905: Phillies Duggleby Tosses Masterpiece
It was a great game for Bill Duggleby of the Philadelphia Phillies. The 31-year-old hurler blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 11-0, stopping them on 3 hits.

In 12 starts this season Duggleby has fashioned a 3-7 record and a 2.29 ERA

Saturday, June 10th, 1905: Bender Sharp, Whitewashes Tigers
The Tigers can take comfort in knowing that they will not have to face Chief Bender again for a while. The 21-year-old hurler pitched a 5-hit shutout to help the Philadelphia Athletics beat Detroit 3-0. In the process, Bender struck out 7 and walked 2.

This year Bender has made 13 starts, thrown 110.1 innings, fanned 65 batters and walked 36. His won-lost record is 9-4 with a 2.04 ERA.

News Notes And Scores From Today's Games

Sunday, June 11th, 1905: Steinfeldt out for 8 Weeks
Cincinnati fans will be disappointed to learn that Harry Steinfeldt developed a fractured wrist while being hit by a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the Cincinnati Reds manager that Steinfeldt was expected to miss 8 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the third baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

This year Steinfeldt is batting .251 with 1 home run and 21 RBIs.

Sunday, June 11th, 1905: Cubs Star DTD with Injury
Reports out of Chicago indicate that Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, the gifted starting pitcher, might be sidelined for 1-2 weeks or so with a finger blister. The 28-year-old star suffered the injury in yesterday's Giants-Cubs game while throwing a pitch. "It's a game time decision," noted the team doctor, "It all depends on how Mordecai feels later today. If he can play, he will."

In 12 starts this season Brown has compiled a 8-2 record and a 1.50 ERA.

Players Of The Week For Week Ending June 11,1905

Monday, June 12th, 1905: Chance Week's Top Player
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Frank Chance, the Chicago first baseman/Manager, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the National League Player of the Week honors.

Chance piled up 8 hits in 19 at-bats, 1 home run and 4 RBIs while hitting .421.

Thus far this season in 45 games Chance is batting .318 with 3 home runs, 20 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He has 50 hits in 157 at-bats.

Monday, June 12th, 1905: Star of the Week Picked in AL
Addie Joss seems to put youthful exuberance into every pitch he throws and last week he threw up numbers that even the oldest of veterans would look at with envy. That's why the 25-year-old hurler was chosen the American League Player of the Week Award.

Joss notched 2 wins for the Cleveland Naps. He finished the week with 8 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.45 while holding the opposition to a .181 average.

His record this year is 9-4 in 13 starts and Joss has a 2.19 ERA.

Tigers Slip By Athletics 3-2 In 11
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-Despite Harry Davis' 4th home run and a brilliant 11 inning pitching performance by Gettysburg Eddie Plank, the A's just could not get it done as Duff Cooley's RBI double in the top of the 11th led Detroit to a narrow 3-2 victory.Down 2-1 heading into the 8th,the Tigers got a game tying solo home run from Lew Drill that gave the Tigers staff another chance that they did not squander,as they held the A's to a mere single over the final four innings of the game with George Disch getting credit with the win in relief. Here's the box score.

Outhit 10-5,Athletics Still Find A Way
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-If you want to be a champion, you have to win a few you should have lost, and today was one of those games for Philadelphia who constantly found themselves in trouble but almost always found their way out of it due to timely pitching by Andy Coakley and some slick fielding up the middle by Danny Murphy and Monte Cross who contributed two rally killing double plays.Offensively, the A's scored on two RBI ground outs by Harry Davis and Danny Murphy and a solo home run by Tom Needham, his first as an Athletic. Here's the box score.
