Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Thursday June 1,1905

Chief Bender Does It All!
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a nailbiter here at Columbia Park,The Athletics continued their torrid winning with a 3-2 victory over the lowly Washingto Senators. The A's Harry Davis got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a two out RBI double that scored Danny Hoffman who led off the inning with a single.Monte Cross made it 2-0 with another two hit,a single to left that scored Harry Davis .The Senators would not just roll over though, closing the gap to 2-1 on a sac fly by Mike Heydon.Over the next several innings, neither team could get anything going off of their opposing pitchers and the score remained 2-1 until the 8th when surprisingly, the Senators tied the game on a two out triple by Rabbitt Nill.In the 9th,the A's were given a golden opportunity when Senators first baseman Jake Stahl muffed a ground ball early in the inning resulting in two baserunners for Philadelphia with one out.As the inning progressed,Chief Bender came to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs needing only a base hit to win the ballgame,Bender then sent a 3-2 Barney Wolfe fastball over the head of the shortstop into left field for the game winning RBI single! With the 3-2 victory, the Athletics have now won 8 of their last 9 ballgames improving their record to 24-18,a full 9 games back of the phenomenal White Sox.Here's the box score.

Athletics Lose Seybold For Season In 8-5 Victory
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-The Philadelphia Athletics' pennant hopes were dealt a serious blow today as veteran right fielder Socks Seybold was lost for the year today when he seriously injured his back making a diving catch in today's 8-5 victory over the Senators. He will be replaced by 21 year old Bris Lord for the remainder of the season. In today's game, the Athletics built an 8-0 lead on the strength of a 6 run 5th inning and then withstood a furious 8th inning comeback to hold on for the 8-5 victory. Here's today's box score.

News,Notes,And Scores From The Rest Of Today's Games

Friday, June 2nd, 1905: Sparks Shuts out Superbas
The Philadelphia Phillies breezed to victory today behind the shutout pitching of Tully Sparks. He surrendered no runs, gave up 2 hits and finished the game with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Phillies won the game 5-0.

Currently Sparks has a record of 4-8 with 31 strikeouts and 33 walks in 98 innings and a 2.85 ERA.

Friday, June 2nd, 1905: Ames Whitewashes Beaneaters
Red Ames of the New York Giants was on fire against Boston. He shut them down 7-0 on 5 hits and no runs with 9 strikeouts and 5 walks.

"The first two pitches I'm looking for an out, a ground ball or a fly ball," Ames said. "I'm trying to get quick outs. I've never been a big believer in trying to strike a guy out from the very first pitch. It's too easy to end up behind in the count doing that."

This year Ames has registered 7 wins and 3 losses in 11 starts with a 3.14 ERA while registering 95 strikeouts and 43 walks in 94.2 innings.

Saturday, June 3rd, 1905: Wicker Hot, Pirates Cold
Bob Wicker put a hex on Pittsburgh in a sparkling 3-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 5-hit gem.

"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

It was anything but comfortable for Pittsburgh.

"Wicker used his changeup very well, very effectively," the opposing manager said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."

The Chicago Cubs hurler fanned 4 and walked 1.

To date this year in 11 starts, Wicker has crafted a 6-4 mark with a 2.19 ERA

Sunday, June 4th, 1905: GM Howell Fired by Washington Senators
Sources close to the Washington situation have been calling for the dismissal of general manager Bob Howell for weeks now. While Howell was able to hold onto the reins despite the club's recent downturn, he ultimately lost his grip and was sent packing today.

Team officials said they preferred for the Senators to go in a different direction and they had nothing but the utmost respect for Howell.

This Week's Players Of The Week!

Monday, June 5th, 1905: NL's Star Player Named
25-year-old Art Devlin sent shock waves through Major League Baseball last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the National League Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Devlin made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .462 average, 12 hits in 26 at-bats, 1 home run and 3 RBI.

Where the New York Giants third baseman goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Devlin certainly made his mark last week.

Currently Devlin has 1 home run and a .238 batting average.

Monday, June 5th, 1905: Red-Hot Rampage Reaps AL Reward
A battle-tested Buck Freeman declared war on opposing pitchers last week, attacking the ball like the well-schooled veteran he is. Today the 33-year-old Boston right fielder collected the American League Player of the Week Award.

He wrapped up the week with a .438 average, 14 hits in 32 at-bats, no home runs, 3 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

To date this year Freeman is batting .360 with no home runs.

A's Sweep Senators For 10th Straight Win!
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-The White Elephants have trampled another victim, sweeping the Washington Senators with today's 4-3 10 inning victory. With the win,the Athletics have now won 10 straight games and 12 of their last 13 heading into their showdown with first place Chicago. As was the case with most of the series, the Athletics got on the board first with a 2 run double by Topsy Hartsel in the second inning giving Philadelphia the early 2-0 lead.In the fourth, the fans were treated to a spectacular home run by Harry Davis giving the A's a 3-0 lead.In was just the fourth time this season that a Philadelphia player has knocked one out of the yard, and the second time for Davis who was the league leader last season with 10.To their credit though, the Senators fought back, scoring twice in the 5th and once in the 8th to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the 10th though, with Topsy Hartsel on second base thanks to an error by Senators third baseman Hunter Hill and a Hartsel swipe of second,A's catcher Tom Needham knocked a base hit through the middle scoring Topsy and ending the game with the home team ahead 4-3.Here's the box score.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Tuesday June 6,1905

Weary Bender Battered In 6-4 White Sox Victory
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Riding high on a 10 game winning streak, the Philadelphia Athletics headed into today's game supremely confident that they would take down first place Chicago.Early on,it looked good for the A's as Lave CXross came through with an RBI double in the first and an RBI single in the third giving Philadelphia an early 2-0 lead.In the fourth, the White Sox cut the lead down to 2-1 on a Frank Isbell RBI single and finally in the 5th they took the lead for good, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits with the killer being a two out two run single by light hitting Billy Sullivan. The A's scored a run of the own in the 5th and ended the inning down 4-3.The White Sox made it 5-3 in the 6th on a massive home run by George Rohe paving the way for Chief Bender's exit from the game. Both teams scored a run in the 9th as Chicago went on to win 6-4.Here's the box score.

News,Notes,And Scores From The Rest Of Today's Games

Tuesday, June 6th, 1905: Joss Sizzles, New York Fizzles
Addie Joss of the Cleveland Naps really zeroed in on New York hitters at League Park I, blanking them 1-0 on 6 hits. Joss struck out 2, and gave up 1 walk in defeating the Highlanders.

This year Joss has a 8-4 mark in 12 starts with a 2.34 ERA. He has given up 75 hits in 104 innings, struck out 41 and issued 21 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .204 batting average against him.

Tuesday, June 6th, 1905: Detroit Loses Schaefer
After the end of today's game between Detroit and Washington, Germany Schaefer skipped the clubhouse and headed straight for the doctor's office. After he was removed from the game as a precaution after throwing the ball, the Tigers had their worst fears confirmed when it turned out to be more serious. The second baseman will miss at least 4 months with a strained elbow ligament.

So far this season, Schaefer has recorded a .223 batting average with 33 hits, 2 home runs, 7 RBIs, 21 runs scored and a .266 OBP.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

The Athletics seem to be on a roll as of late. The starting rotation seems to be carrying the team. Plank and Bender have been really good so far and so has that nutcase, Waddell.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Wednesday June 7,1905

Fans Voice Their Displeasure As Athletics Are Blanked 7-0
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In a downright embarassment of a game, the Chicago White Sox thoroughly outclassed the Philadelphia Athletics on their way to a dominating 7-0 shutout victory. On an overcast and rainy day,the A's seemed as though they'd rather be anywhere than at the ballpark as Chicago pitcher Doc White pitched 8 strong innings allowing only 4 hits and 0 runs while striking out 8 before leaving the game for a pinch hitter in the 9th,Roy Patterson finished the game with a perfect inning of relief. For Philadelphia, starting pitcher Eddie Plank was in trouble virtually the entire game allowing 11 hits but only 3 runs as he was time and again able to get the big out to keep his team in the game.In the 9th though, relief pitcher Joseph Myers was atrocious allowing 5 hits and 4 runs(3 earned) in just one inning of work ending any hope of a Philadelphia comeback,Myers may very well have pitched his last game in a Philadelphia uniform. Here's the box score.
