Today's News Notes And Scores

Thursday, May 11th, 1905: Cincinnati Blanks Superbas, Chech Wins
Charlie Chech of the Cincinnati Reds just toyed with the Brooklyn Superbas today, blanking them 8-0. He was almost untouchable, baffling them on a 4-hit shutout with 1 strikeout and 2 walks.

"I'm sweating now because it's hot in here," Chech said in the clubhouse after the game. "But it didn't even feel like I was sweating out there."

One of his teammates said it was easy to play behind him today. "It was like he's just playing with the hitters and doing whatever he wanted to do."

Thursday, May 11th, 1905: Chicago Loses Evers
The Cubs received bad news this morning. Johnny Evers will miss 8 weeks due to a strained rotator cuff muscle. In the Chicago-Boston game he sustained the injury while throwing the ball. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Evers sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery."

Thus far in 1905 Evers is batting .305 with no home runs, 14 RBIs and 9 runs scored

Browns Score 4 In 5th To Stun Athletics
Sportsman's Park-St.Louis Mo.-The last place St.Louis Browns shocked the 2nd place Athletics today with a well played 5-3 victory. The Athletics had it going early as CF Danny Hoffman led off the game with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third and finally scored on a sac fly by Socks Seybold giving the A's the 1-0 lead. The Athletics made it 2-0 in the second when following a Topsy Hartsel leadoff double,Danny Murphy came to the plate and singled him home. The Browns answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own on an RBI ground out by pitcher Barney Pelty making it 2-1.In the fourth, the Athletics Harry Davis led off the inning with a triple, and scored on a nifty suicide squeeze executed to perfection by Topsy Hartsel making it 3-1 Athletics. In the 5th,everything went wrong for A's starting pitcher Eddie Plank. After loading the bases with a single and two walks,Plank then walked Ike Rockenfeld to bring in one run,he then hit Charlie Starr with a pitch to give St.Louis another run,and finally,Frank Roth singled bringing home two more runs giving St.Louis a 5-3 lead after 5.Over the final four innings, the Athletics could put nothing together and fell by the same 5-3 score.Barney Pelty was today's winning pitcher improving to 2-4 while Gettysburg Eddie absorbed the loss falling to 4-2.Here's the box score.

Brown Out!
Sportsmans Park,St.Louis Mo.-In a bit of a head scratcher,The St.Louis Browns were able to once again able to take down the Athletics with today's 3-2 victory in 13 innings.Despite having 6 hits after two innings, the Athletics found themselves in a 1-1 tie with the Browns as baserunning mistakes stopped rallies in each of the first two innings. In the third,St.Louis took a 2-1 lead when following a Branch Rickey single and steal of second,Ike Rockenfeld brought him home with a double to right center. The Athletics quickly tied it in the fourth on a Monte Cross RBI double that scored Topsy Hartsel. From then on,the game took on another life with neither team able to do anything offensively until the 13 where, finally the Browns put together 3 straight singles with the final one coming from the bat of second baseman Charlie Starr giving St.Louis the hard fought 3-2 victory. The performance of the game though, belongs to Browns starting pitcher Willie Sudhoff, who went all 13 innings for the win while not allowing a hit after the 4th inning!Thats 9 straight hitless innings, mighty impressive! Here's the box score.

News,Notes,And Scores From Today's Other Games

Saturday, May 13th, 1905: Bad News for Philadelphia, Titus Hurt
Philadelphia fans will be disappointed to learn that John Titus developed a strained back muscle while stealing a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Philadelphia Phillies manager that Titus was expected to miss 4 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the right fielder could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Titus is batting .245 this season in 26 games with 1 home run, 12 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He has 23 hits in 94 at-bats.

Players Of The Week For This Week,May 8-14

Monday, May 15th, 1905: Great Week for New York's Center Fielder
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Mike Donlin, the New York center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the National League Player of the Week honors.

Donlin piled up 14 hits in 24 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBIs while hitting .583.

In 1905 Donlin is batting .458 with 44 hits, 2 home runs, 19 RBIs, 19 walks, .543 OBP and has scored 20 runs. He has played in 26 games.

Monday, May 15th, 1905: American League Hitter of the Week
At the age of 29, Elmer Flick might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Cleveland right fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the American League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 7 hits in 22 at-bats, 2 home runs and 6 RBIs last week in 6 games.

In his season totals Flick has 3 home runs and a .240 batting average.

Athletics Find A Way To Lose Despite Bender's 2 Hitter
Sportsman's Park-In a fitting end to a nightmare series,A's starting pitcher Chief Bender allowed all of two hits but his team still found a way to lose the game 2-1.The Browns struck first in the 2nd when following a Branch Rickey walk,Bender uncorked a wild pitch sending Rickey to second, then Rickey stole third setting up Ike Rockenfield's Sac Fly giving St.Louis the 1-0 lead. The A's tied it in the 5th on a Harry davis RBi single that scored Lave Cross. The difference maker came in the bottom of the 6th where George Stone singled home Jim Buchanan who walked to start off the inning.Following the 4 game sweep, the Athletics now head to Chicago to take on the first place White Sox.Here's the box score.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Tuesday May 16,1905

Athletics Suffer 5th Straight Defeat
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-Despite holding the lead for most of the game, the Athletics were unable finish the job, ultimately losing in 10 innings to first place Chicago 2-1 extending their skid to 5 games."Obviously we have a much better team than our record indicates" opined starting pitcher Eddie Plank who also added that"The boys will get this turned around,I'm sure of it.Last time I checked,no one ever won the Series in May".All in all,we here at the Daily News agree with Gettysburg Eddie but at the same time, you don't want to fall to far behind especially with there being so many good teams in the league this season. In today's game, our hometown heroes jumped out in front in the third on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze laid down by Lave Cross and scoring Danny Hoffman who found his way to third with a single and an errant throw on a steal attempt of second that allowed Danny to take an extra base. From there,we had a stalemate until the 8th when following a one out seeing eye single by White Sox pitcher Ed Walsh,Nixie Callahan doubled down the left field line scoring Walsh and tying the game at 1.With neither team able to mount anything in the 9th,The Athletics were headed to extras for the third time in their last four games. In the 10th,the Athletics went down 1-2-3 giving the home team a chance the would not squander. With young righty Sunny Jim Dygert on the hill for Philly, the end would come quickly.Chicago second baseman Frank Isbell led off the inning with a double and was quickly brought home by pinch hitter Danny Green who also doubled giving Chicago the 2-1 win. Here's the box score.

News,Notes,And Scores From The Rest Of The League

Tuesday, May 16th, 1905: Willis Hot, Reds Cold
Before the game Vic Willis liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Beaneaters pitcher whitewashed the Cincinnati Reds 5-0.

Willis said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."

The Boston starter held Cincinnati scoreless, giving up 2 hits while registering 4 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.

"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Reds manager said in his postgame interview.

"When that happens, you usually lose."

This season to date Willis has a record of 4 wins and 4 losses with a 2.60 ERA, has appeared in 8 games and struck out 22 in 62.1 innings.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Wednesday May 17,1905

Struggling Athletics No Match For Streaking White Sox
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-In what is becoming a disturbing trend, the Philadelphia Athletics again looked disinterested and lacksadasical as the Chicago White Sox had their way with them in today's 6-1 defeat. After three scoreless innings to start the ballgame,The A's gave Chicago the first run of the game when with a man on third and two outs,Andy Coakley's pickoff throw sailed into front row of seats giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. The lead grew to 4-0 in the 5th on a 2 run triple by Lee Tannehill followed by a Frank Owen RBI ground out giving Chicago an almost insurmountable lead.In the 7th,the White Sox added two more runs on a shocking two run homer by starting pitcher Frank "Yip" Owen making the score 6-0.Beside swatting long flys,Owen was also having a monsterous day on the mound allowing only 1 hit and 0 runs after 7 innings of play.In the 9th,the Athletics finally got to Owen a bit, scoring a run on three hits ending the scoring at 6-1.The Athletics have now lost 6 straight and have fallen to 14-14,eight and a half games behind Chicago. Here's the box score.
