Player Awards For The Month Of July

Rookies Of The Month
Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: NL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Joe Ward was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 21-year-old second baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen July's National League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 18 games Ward batted .351 for Philadelphia, slapping 27 hits in 77 at-bats with no home runs, drove in 10 runs and scored 7 times.

In 77 games this year Ward has posted a .326 average and put up these numbers: 1 home run, 24 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: American League Names Rookie of Month
Chet Chadbourne earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the American League for last month's performance. The boyish Boston right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Chadbourne hit .343 with 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and 13 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

So far this year Chadbourne has 2 home runs and a .316 batting average.

Batters Of The Month

Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: Schulte Takes NL's Best Bat Trophy
When Frank Schulte stepped up to the plate in July, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the National League Batter of the Month award.

The young Chicago right fielder posted a .373 batting average with 2 home runs, 14 RBIs and scored 23 runs. Schulte also worked pitchers for 11 walks to post a .435 on-base percentage.

Presently Schulte is batting .293 with 103 hits and 5 home runs. He has knocked in 53 runs and scored 60 times.

Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: AL's Top Hitter Selected
A hot-hitting George Stone punished AL pitchers in July, hitting .360 in 24 games while racking up 1 home run, 26 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

With those numbers it came as no surprise that St. Louis's 29-year-old left fielder earned American League Batter of the Month honors.

Thus far in 1906 Stone is batting .355 with 3 home runs, 64 RBIs and 53 runs scored.

Pitchers Of The Month

Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: National League Announces #1 Starter
The National League made it official today -- Mordecai Brown of the Chicago Cubs is the Pitcher of the Month. In July he impressed the sportswriters with his domination of league hitters.

Brown made 7 starts, registered 6 wins and 1 loss with a solid 2.76 ERA. In 62 innings he allowed 49 hits, racked up 25 strikeouts, walked 13 and permitted teams to hit .211 against him.

So far this season Brown has a 19-5 record, 25 starts, 214.1 innings, 92 strikeouts and a 2.31 ERA.

Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: Philadelphia's Bender AL Top Pitcher
Chief Bender hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning American League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In July the Philadelphia starter earned a 7-0 mark in 7 starts. He threw 62 innings, struck out 35 and compiled a solid 1.31 ERA.

To this point in the season Bender has 22 wins and 1 loss and a 1.75 ERA.

Egan Gets Shutout
Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: Egan Gets Shutout
Wish Egan of the St. Louis Cardinals really strutted his stuff on the mound today with a 2-0 victory. He was almost untouchable, bewildering the New York Giants with a 6-hit shutout in which he struck out 2 and gave up 1 walk.

Thus far this season, Egan has worked 105.1 innings with 30 strikeouts en route to a 5-9 record and a 3.76 ERA.

Dygert Holds Cleveland Scoreless
Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: Dygert Holds Cleveland Scoreless
The Naps can take comfort in knowing that they will not have to face Jimmy Dygert again for a while. The 22-year-old hurler pitched a 2-hit shutout to help the Philadelphia Athletics beat Cleveland 10-0. In the process, Dygert struck out 3 and walked 2.

This season-to-date Dygert has 4 wins and 2 losses and a 3.17 ERA.

Sparks Bewilders Cubs In Shutout
Wednesday, August 1st, 1906: Sparks Bewilders Cubs in Shutout
The Chicago Cubs were almost helpless today in their 10-0 loss to Philadelphia hurler Tully Sparks. He kept them confused the entire ballgame and spun a 4-hit shutout.

The Chicago manager said in the postgame interview, "Tip your hat to Sparks. He kept us off balance all night."

Sparks said, "It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play. It was just one of those games that things went my way."

He had 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in a strong performance.

In 1906 Sparks has worked 213 innings with 90 strikeouts en route to a 12-12 record and 2.15 ERA.
