News And Notes From Around The League

Thursday, May 4th, 1905: Tannehill Tosses Shutout
Everything clicked on the hill today for Jesse Tannehill of the Boston Americans as he hurled his club to a 4-0 shutout win over the New York Highlanders, limiting them to 5 hits while recording 3 strikeouts and yielding no walks. He overpowered some batters with his fastball and buckled knees with his sharp breaking pitches.

"We had our shot at him a couple of different times," the Highlanders manager said, "but we weren't able to get to him."

In 5 starts this year Tannehill has fashioned a 4-1 record and a 1.23 ERA

It's most definitely worth the upgrade. If you're on the fence,go for it.On another note as far as this season is going,WOW! thats all I can say.The strategy that is needed and the pressure you're always under in this era of baseball is awesome.I'm really having a blast with it.Another thing is,I know its 12 seasons or so away, but I wonder how history will be effected if Babe Ruth stays in Boston, that should be interesting.

Gettysburg Eddie Awesome Again!
American League Park,Washington DC.-In a well played pitchers duel, the Athletics behind a stellar pitching performance by Gettysburg Eddie Plank just got past an inspired Senators team 2-1.Philadelphia got on the board first today, with an RBI single by pitcher Eddie Plank that scored catcher Ossee Schreckengost giving the A's a 1-0 lead.In the 5th,the Athletics upped their lead to 2-0 on an RBI ground out by Danny Hoffman that scored Monte Cross who singled to start the inning. In the 7th, the Senators were finally able to get to Plank when following a Fred Huelsman double to start the inning,Charlie casey singled him home closing the gap to 2-1.In the 8th,Washington threatened again loading the bases with one out,but Eddie Plank was up to the task striking out Fred Huelsman for the second out and getting Punch Knoll to ground out harmlessly to end the inning with Washington still down,2-1.The Senators would not threaten in the 9th and Eddie Plank had his 4th victory of the season. Here's the box score.

Players Of The Week For The Week Ending May 7,1905

Monday, May 8th, 1905: Super Week for Cincinnati's Seymour!
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Cy Seymour, the Cincinnati center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the National League Player of the Week honors.

Seymour piled up 12 hits in 20 at-bats, no home runs and 4 RBIs while hitting .600.

During the 1905 season Seymour has hit .412 with no home runs and 13 RBIs. He has played in 21 games and scored 8 times.

Monday, May 8th, 1905: AL's Top Player, Isbell of Chicago
At the age of 29, Frank Isbell might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Chicago second baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the American League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 11 hits in 18 at-bats, no home runs and 2 RBIs last week in 4 games.

Looking at his stats this year, Isbell has compiled a .364 batting average, while hitting no home runs and driving in 6 runs. He has played in 19 games and scored 13 runs.

Dominant Waddell Finally Gets A Win!

American League Park,Washington DC.-Although it looked early as though Rube Waddell's run of bad luck would continue, his teammates didn't let it happen scoring 7 runs in the last two innings turning a 3-2 deficit into a 9-3 victory. The Athletics got it rolling early with Monte Cross' RBI triple in the top of the second giving Philadelphia the 1-0 lead.Unbelievably,in the bottom of the inning Waddell's bad luck made an appearance for all to see as the Senators scored two runs on 0 hits thanks to errors by third baseman Lave Cross and catcher Ossee Schreckengost giving Washington a 2-1 lead.In the bottom of the third, following a two out double by Jake Stahl, the Athletics gave away another run when once again catcher Ossee Schreckengost threw a ball into left field on a steal attempt giving the Senators a 3-1 lead on three unearned runs.At this point, Mack stormed onto the field to relieve Schreckengost of his duties sending in backup catcher Harry Barton to finish the game.Following Mack's outburst, the A's were a different team. They closed the gap to 3-2 in the 4th when Monte Cross again came through, this time with an RBI double that scored Danny Murphy. For the game,Cross was 4 for 4 with a single, double, and a triple with 3 RBI and a run scored. It wasn't until the 8th inning that the Athletics could get to Senators starter Case Patten again when following a Danny Hoffman double to lead off the inning, Senators catcher Ed Heydon had his own fielding troubles, throwing Lave Cross' sacrifice bunt into right field allowing Hoffman to score tying the game at three. In the 9th,the Athletics exploded for 7 hits and 6 runs turning a tie game into a 9-3 romp and a victory for Rube. Here's the box score.

Bender Dominates Washington For League Leading 5th Win

American League Park,Washington,DC-In another spectacular performance, the Athletics ace starter Chief Bender outdueled the Senators Tom Hughes giving Philadelphia a sparkling 1-0 victory in the final game of the series.Today's game was all about pitching with the only run of the game coming in the top of the first where following a Danny Hoffman leadoff double and a Lave Cross ground out,Socks Seybold grounded out to first scoring Hoffman giving the A's a 1-0 lead. From there on out it was all pitching as Chief Bender allowed 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 for his 5th win of the season and his 2nd shutout. For Washington,Tom Hughes was the tough luck loser. Here's the box score.
