Bender Improves To 12-1 Following 10-0 Whitewash Of Browns
Sportsman's Park,St.Louis Mo.-Much to the chagrin of the 4,715 fanatics in attendance, the Athletics Chief Bender(12-1) absolutely demoralized the Browns holding them to a scant 6 hits while fanning 5 as the A's rolled to an easy 10-0 victory.Suburbanite Socks Seybold and third sacker Rube Oldring led the offensive assault with each man getting 4 hits while Socks scored three times and Rube knocked in 2.Here's the box score.

Players Of The Week For Week Ending June 10,1906
Monday, June 11th, 1906: Week's Top Player: Boston's Bates
Johnny Bates burst onto the National League stage in a big way last week. This promising rookie center fielder for Boston garnered everyone's respect by putting up some remarkable numbers and picking up the Player of the Week trophy.

The 23-year-old haunted opposing pitchers hitting .556 (10-18) with 1 home run and 3 RBIs last week.

This year Bates is batting .323 with 53 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 12 times and has batted in 26 runs.

Monday, June 11th, 1906: American League Winner is Altizer
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Dave Altizer, the Washington shortstop, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the American League Player of the Week honors.

Altizer piled up 11 hits in 23 at-bats, no home runs and 3 RBIs while hitting .478.

This season Altizer has hit at a .275 clip with 10 RBIs, 0 home runs and 22 runs scored.

Athletics Reclaim First Place Following 1-0 Victory Over St.Louis
Sportsman's Park,St.Louis,Mo.-In one of the finest exhibitions of pitching this season,Philadelphia's combination of Jack Coombs and Weldon Henley(1-1) bested the St.Louis combo of Fred Glade(4-6) and "Wee" Willie Sudhoff in today's 1-0 thirteen inning victory.Following two straight hits to start the 13th,Athletics backstop Ossee Schreckengost grounded into a terrible double play that left Philadelphia with a man on third and two outs for third sacker Rube Oldring who's infield single scored Socks Seybold and gave the A's a hard fought 1-0 victory. Here's the box score.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Tuesday June 12,1906

Athletics Blank Tigers 1-0 For Third Straight Shutout
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-In one of the most bitterly contested pitchers' battles ever in Bennett Park,Athletics twirler Rube Waddell(11-2) outdueled Tigers boxman Kaiser Wilhelm(6-6) 1-0 thanks to a Socks Seybold RBI fielder's choice in the top of the first inning that scored young Eddie Collins who singled to start the game. From there,it was all pitching with Waddell allowing just 3 hits and striking out 7 while Wilhelm, slightly less impressive, allowed 6 hits for the game. For Detroit, who now stand at 20-31,today's game was a much needed morale booster as they await the imminent return from injury of their two best players in Ty Cobb and Wahoo Sam McDowell who if all goes well will return this week,as for the Athletics, they'record now stands at 34-19,good enough tp pace the competitive American League. Here's the box score

Eddie Collins Out Of Lineup,Listed DTD
Wednesday, June 13th, 1906: Eddie Collins out of Lineup, Listed DTD
Eddie Collins, the talented Philadelphia star, suffered a concussion yesterday in the game with the Tigers, which could keep him out of today's lineup. "I'm a bit banged up," said the 19-year-old shortstop, "but we won't know until game time if I can play or not." Collins got hurt while running the bases. The team doctor said he could be out up to one week.

A look at his 1906 stats shows Collins with a .365 average, 1 home run, 16 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He has played in 50 games.

Hess Tames Highlanders
Wednesday, June 13th, 1906: Hess Tames Highlanders
In an almost effortless performance, Otto Hess of the Naps shot down the Highlanders 4-0 on a 6-hit shutout.

His skipper said, "Otto was just locating so well and using his pitches... not leaving anything over the plate."

Hess recorded 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in a strong outing.

In the postgame press conference, the New York manager said, "When he needed to make pitches, he elevated his game like he can and we couldn't get a key hit off him."

Looking at his season stats, Hess has won 8 and lost 5, collecting 60 strikeouts and 31 walks in 116.2 innings with a 2.16 ERA.

Athletics Defeat Tigers 4-2 As Cobb Finally Makes Season Debut
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-Despite the return of star suburbanite Ty Cobb, the Detroit Tigers could not solve the riddles thrown at them by the leagues best twirler as they fell to Chief Bender(13-1) and the Athletics by the score of 4-2. When asked about the season he's had so far,Bender made it quite clear as to why he thinks he's been so successful "My mates have been behind me 100%,they hit and field better than any team in the league, which makes my job really easy".So far this season,Bender has been absolutely amazing as he's compiled a 13-1 record with 12 CG's and 2 shutouts,he has an ERA of 1.88, a WHIP of .97 and 63 strikeouts against only 18 walks. Here's the box score.

Pirates Karger To Miss Year
Thursday, June 14th, 1906: Pirates Karger to Miss Year
The doctors have spoken and Ed Karger of the Pittsburgh Pirates didn't like what he heard. The 23-year-old starting pitcher is almost certainly gone for the rest of the year and depending on his progress could miss some of next season as well. Karger sustained his season-ending injury during the Brooklyn Superbas game yesterday at Exposition Park. He had to leave the game because he hurt himself while throwing a pitch. Today the Pittsburgh medical staff reported Karger had bone chips in his elbow and would be absent from the lineup for at least 13 months.

So far this season Karger has 6 wins and 4 losses and a 2.60 ERA.

Monday, June 18th, 1906: NL Player of Week: New York's Ames
Red Ames seems to put youthful exuberance into every pitch he throws and last week he threw up numbers that even the oldest of veterans would look at with envy. That's why the 23-year-old hurler was chosen the National League Player of the Week Award.

Ames notched 2 wins for the New York Giants. He finished the week with 13 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.00 while holding the opposition to a .175 average.

So far this season Ames has compiled a 4-3 record with a 2.76 ERA.

Monday, June 18th, 1906: AL Names Top Player of the Week
Frank Delahanty demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the American League Player of the Week Award.

The New York left fielder wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .500 average (13-26) with no home runs and 0 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

To date Delahanty has chalked up a .288 average with no home runs, driven in 14 runs and scored 29 times.
