Athletics Steal Their Way To Victory!
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa-In another wonderfully competitive game, the Athletics were just able to edge the Boston Americans, winning the game 3-2 to take their first series of the season. In the top of the first,Boston came out swinging on Athletics starter Eddie Plank with Jesse Burkett and Jimmy Collins both singling and Chick Stahl coaxing a walk giving Boston the bases loaded with no outs for Kip Selbach.Selbach then singled to right on a little Texas Leaguer bringing home two Boston runs and leaving runners on the corners still without an out being made.Plank settled though and retired the next three batters in order escaping the inning only down 2.Still down 2-0 entering the bottom of the 4th,the Athletics rallied when following back to back one out singles by Danny Murphy and Topsy Hartsel,Mack called for the double steal causing Americans catcher Lou Criger to throw the ball into left field bringing home Murphy and putting Hartsel on third with Socks Seybold at the plate.Seybold proceeded to tie the game with a base hit to right giving Philadelphia new life. The game would stay tied at 2 until the bottom of the 7th where following a Topsy Hartsel walk and stolen base,Socks Seybold grounded out to second advancing Hartsel to third with one out.Lave Cross was then intentionally walked and Ossee Schreckengost just beat out a nubber down the third base line for an infield single to load the bases.Harry Barton then followed with fielders's choice bringing home the go ahead run and the A's had their first lead at 3-2 after 7 innings.Following an uneventful 8th that saw starter Eddie Plank lifted for reliever Welden Henley, the Americans were down to their last three outs.Leadoff batter Freddie Parent reached on an error by the shortstop and immediately we had drama. The next two batters both grounded out advancing Parent to third,90 feet from tying the game.Connie Mack had one more trick up his sleeve,he called for two straight intentional walks loading the bases for Bunny Godwin who had not had an at bat all season.Predictably,Godwin flied out harmlessly to right preserving the victory for Philadelphia. Here's the box score.

Athletics Defeat Highlanders In A Wild One!
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In a game that had everything, the Philadelphia Athletics were able to come back in the bottom of the 9th to defeat the New York Highlanders 7-6.From the opening pitch, the game was a back and forth affair with NY taking an early 1-0 lead only to see the Athletics score two in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead after 1.The Highlander took the lead again in third and again the A's came right back to end the inning up 5-3.In the top of the 4th,the Highlanders tied it again and this time there was no response. The game stayed tied at 5 until the 6th,when the Highlanders took a 6-5 lead on a Walter Clarkson single bring home Doc Casey who tripled to lead off the inning. The game would remain 6-5 until the bottom of the 9th where a Lave Cross single started the inning and was followed by an Ossee Schreckengost single giving the A's first and third with no outs.Harry Barton then ended the game with a double to deep center field scoring both runners and giving Philadelphia the 7-6 win. Here's the box score.

Highlanders Steal Home Twice In 7-3 Win
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In a blistering tirade,Athletics skipper Connie Mack exploded on his team after a perceived lack of effort in today's 7-3 defeat."I will not accept anything less than 100% effort, and when a team steals home on you twice in one game, your not giving 100%"."To be fair, the Highlanders are very aggressive on the basepaths and the only way to combat this is to keep the baserunners down to a minimum,Waddell didn't do that today,he allowed 11 baserunners and thats just too many if you expect to win consistently in this league".The game started out with the Highlanders building a 4-1 lead after 2 innings, the Athletics never recovered.Dave Fultz and Frank Delahanty did most of the damage with both players going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored with Fultz stealing 3 bases and Delahanty 2 including a steal of home for each player.Jack Chesboro pitched just well enough to improve his record to 2-0.He went the distance allowing 10 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 1.For Philadelphia,Schoolboy Knight made up for his poor effort in the field by going 3 for 4 with a double an RBi a run scored and the teams first home run of the season. Here's the box score.

Athletics Halt Highlanders Run Game,Win 5-0
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In a clinic like performance, the Philadelphia Athletics behind another complete game shutout by Chief Bender dismantled the New York offense on their way to a 5-0 victory. The Athletics set the tone early, throwing out the first two runners who attempted to steal a base, effectively grounding the explosive Highlander attack. The A's mounted their own attack in the bottom of the third when following a Danny Hoffman leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt by Danny Murphy,Topsy Hartsel singled home Hoffman who was then doubled home by Harry Davis who finally returned to action after a 5 week rib injury.Following a Socks Seybold strikeout,Lave Cross singled home Davis giving the Athletics a 3-0 after 3.That score would remain until the 7th when Topsy Hartsel singled home Danny Hoffman giving the A's a 4-0 lead. The Athletics struck again in the 8th on a Chief Bender RBI single that ended the scoring at 5-0.On the hill,The Chief was in absolute control the entire game allowing 5 hits and 5 walks while fanning 6 in the complete game victory.Offensively,Danny Hoffman reeked havoc on New York going 4 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. All in all, this was the best all around game of the season for Philadelphia who get another boost tomorrow with the return of starting shortstop Monte Cross for this weekend's series in Boston.Cross has been out for the last four weeks with a damaged meniscus. Here's the box score.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Saturday April 22,1905

Error In 6th Hands Athletics 4-3 Victory
Huntington Avenue Grounds,Boston Ma.-In a tightly contested battle, the Athletics were once again to able to defeat the Americans, this time by the score of 4-3.The A's jumped out quicky scoring twice in the top of the second on back to back RBI doubles by Ossee Schreckengost and Monte Cross giving pitcher Andy Coakley an early 2-0 lead to work with.Boston closed it to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on a Duke Farrell fly ball that was dropped by CF Danny Hoffman allowing Freddie Parent to score.Following a Harry Davis triple to start the fourth,Socks Seybold grounded out to short scoring Davis and increasing the lead to 3-1 after 4.In the 6th,Danny Murphy's leadoff single was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a steal of third giving Philadelphia a man on third with one out.Boston then proceeded to intentionally walk the next two batters loading the bases for Lave Cross who struck out swinging for the second out of the inning.Ossee Schreckengost then came to the plate and hit a routine grounder to second that was booted by Boston second baseman Jimmy Williams giving Philadelphia a 4-1 lead before Monte Cross's fly out ended the inning.Boston began their half of the sixth with a Jesse Burkett single followed by a Myron Grimshaw double giving Boston second and third with no outs.Coakley evidently rattled, uncorked a wild pitch allowing Burkett to score and Grimshaw to move up to third still without an out in the inning.Coakley then went strike out,RBI ground out and ground out to survive the inning with a 4-3 lead.Boston would not threaten over the final three innings and Philadelphia would go on to win by the final score of 4-3.Here's the box score.

In Other Games Today

Saturday, April 22nd, 1905: Griffith No-Hits Senators
Clark Griffith of the Highlanders was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew... he was one out from a no-hitter. He froze... for a couple of seconds he didn't move.

"This hitter is the last one," Griffith told himself. Then he collected himself and finished one of his greatest performances ever.

The New York hurler no-hit the Washington Senators 3-0 at Hilltop Park, finishing with 1 walks and 4 strikeouts, facing only 29 batters.

Griffith admitted to the press, "I knew from the fifth inning on it was a no-hitter, but really didn't worry about it until the last out. I just wanted to win the game until then... then I wanted the no-hitter, too."

Saturday, April 22nd, 1905: Altrock Mystifies Detroit
Nick Altrock allowed 2 hits while giving up 2 walks and collecting no strikeouts as Chicago blanked Detroit 5-0.

In the postgame interview Altrock said, "I'm trying to keep the ball down and let guys put it in play. It worked for me today."

Saturday, April 22nd, 1905: Freeman out of Action
Buck Freeman of the Boston Americans could be headed for the disabled list after suffering a strained posterior cruciate ligament in a game against the Philadelphia Athletics. He is expected to miss at least 5 weeks. The Boston right fielder was injured running the bases. Freeman said, "Right now I am pretty sore and I don't feel very good at all."

This year Freeman is hitting .370 with 10 hits, no home runs, 0 RBIs and has scored 4 runs.
