Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

The starting rotation is doing great. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the hitters. There's something not quite right on the team if your top three hitters are all pitchers.

And they called the '06 Pale Hose the "Hitless Wonders".

The strength of this team was most definitely its THREE!!! HALL OF FAME STARTERS.Thats pretty amazing if you think about it.I guess Mack figured that he'd go cheap on the hitting because they didn't need much. Its definitely a much different game than todays game though.Alot of slap hitting, hit and run, stolen bases and the like.I love it though, there's really a lot of strategy involved. Its going to be interesting as i go through time to see the way the game changes.

9th Inning Balk Gives Highlanders Controversial 3-2 Victory
Hilltop Park,NY,NY-In a highly controversial ballgame with the visitors crying foul, the New York Highlanders escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics on a disputed balk call in the bottom of the 9th with two outs and runners on the corners.A's pitcher Weldon Henley had to be restrained from attacking the umpire as showers of popcorn and beer were thrown at the visitors by the surly NY crowd.Overshadowed by all of the hubub was the game that was had by Wee Willie Keeler who went 4 for 4 with a walk, and two runs scored for New York.Kid Elberfeld also had a good game going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.Here's the box score.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Players Of The week for Week Ending July 2,1905

Monday, July 3rd, 1905: American League Names Top Player
Some of his critics have joked that Cy Young needs a cane to climb the mound these days, but those jibes were silenced today as the 38-year-old Boston hurler was awarded Player of the Week for his sterling performance last week.

Young threw 18 innings for Boston, striking out 13, winning 2 and logging an ERA of 0.50 as he proved that he still has some mileage left in his pitching arm.

In 1905 Young has compiled a 12-6 record with a 1.62 ERA in 18 starts.

Monday, July 3rd, 1905: NL's Top Player Named
So far in his young career, Sherry Magee has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the National League in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.

The 20-year-old Philadelphia Phillies left fielder hit at a torrid .462 clip as he collected 12 hits in 26 at-bats, 1 home run, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

So far this season, Magee has recorded a .266 batting average with 72 hits, 1 home run, 18 RBIs, 29 runs scored and a .348 OBP.

Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Oh So Close!

Hilltop Park,NY,NY- Philadelphia Athletics' starting pitcher Andy Coakley took a no hitter into the 9th inning where he injured his knee running out a ground ball and had to be removed from the game denying him his chance at making history. At bat with runners on first and second and a 3-0 lead,Coakley hit a ground ball deep into the hole at second base where while legging out an infield hit,Coakley landed awkwardly on the bag and twisted his knee causing the injury.Coakley would be replaced in the bottom of the inning by reliever Weldon Henley, who allowed a walk and a single to the first two batters he faced ending the no-hit bid.Henly did retire the next three batters to finish off New York 4-0.To add insult to injury,A's manager Connie Mack was informed that his star second baseman Danny Murphy would be suspended for two games after being ejected in the fourth inning of today's game for arguing balls and strikes. As for Coakley, his injury has been diagnosed as a sore knee and he'll miss a start or two. Here's the box score.

News Notes And Scores From The Rest Of Today's Action

Monday, July 3rd, 1905: Murphy Suspended, Out 2 Games

The Philadelphia Athletics were not very happy with the home plate umpire in today's 4-0 lvictory over New York at Hilltop Park. One in particular -- Danny Murphy. Upon being called out on strikes, the Athletics second baseman gave the ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue gave him the thumb and sent him to an early shower.

But the disgruntled Murphy lingered on the field for another five minutes berating the umpire. Finally his manager got him off the field and into the clubhouse.

But it got worse after the game, when Murphy told reporters, "He was blind today. They played 'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in braille, so he can follow along."

For all of his escapades and after-the-game oration, the league office suspended Murphy for 2 games.

Currently Murphy is batting .261 with 67 hits and 2 home runs. He has knocked in 33 runs and scored 35 times.

Monday, July 3rd, 1905: Pirates Shut out by Overall
The Pittsburgh Pirates struggled at the plate today against Reds hurler Orval Overall, who shackled them on 5 hits while hurling a complete game 2-0 shutout.

"What can you say? We didn't hit well," said the Pirates skipper in his postgame comments.

"Hopefully we shake this off and bounce back tomorrow."

Overall finished the game with 5 strikeouts and 5 walks in an excellent mound performance.

"He pitched real well," his manager said. "Orval made pitches when he had to. He hit his spots and did a great job of mixing in his changeup and using his fastball effectively."

In 1905 Overall has a 11-6 record with a 2.75 ERA.
