Pirates Marooned By Tsitouris!

Forbes Field-New Phillies acquisition John Tsitouris who was picked up off of waivers last week was solid in his first start as a Phillie, going 7 innings and allowing 6 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 9 in the Phillies 12-4 victory.Ryne Duren and Jack Baldschun combined to shut the door.At the plate, young left fielder Alex Johnson had a great game going 2 for 3 with a double and a 3 run homer.John Callison also had a good game going 3 for 6 and scoring 3 times. For the Pirates, starter Joe Gibbon lasted only 4 innings while allowing 6 hits and 6 runs(3 earned).Pirate relievers Arnold Earley,Earl Francis and Gordie Richardson fared no better allowing a combined 11 hits and 6 runs in just 5 innings of work.At the plate, the Pirates were led by former Phillie Wes Covington who went 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI.The teams will play the rubber match tomorrow as the Phillies wind up their 13 game road trip in which they have gone 7 and 5 to date. Here's the box score.

Costly Errors Negate Short's Masterful Performance
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila Pa-Phillies starter Chris Short worked his magic again going 8 and a third while allowing only 4 hits and 3 runs(1 earned) while whiffing 7 but costly errors in the 6th proved fatal and the Phils fell to the Colt .45's 5-2.For Houston, starter Billy O'Dell also pitched a fine game going 7 innings while allowing 8 hits and 2 earned runs,he didn't factor into the decision.Relievers Gordon Jones pitched an inning and got the win, Hal Woodeshick earned the save. The game turned in the Colts favor when in the top of the 6th with one on and one out,Dick Allen and Johnny Callison made back to back errors on seemingly routine plays giving the Colts 2 free runs and lots of momentum which they used to their advantage in the 9th where Phillies reliever Bobby Locke was tagged with 2 hits and a walk leading to three Colt runs giving them the ballgame. Here's the box score.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Phillies Acquire Osteen In Blockbuster Trade With Senators!
Phila,Pa-Word has just come down from the Phillies front office that the Phillies and the Washington Senators have agreed on a trade that will bring starting pitcher Claude Osteen to the Phillies for LF Alex Johnson,CF Johnny Briggs,MR Dennis Bennett and $50,000.This will give the Phillies a major boost to their pitching staff which is ranked 9th in the NL in ERA.GM Gindville admitted that the price was steep, but he decided it had to be done if the Phillies were going to compete this year.Osteen is expected to be in Philadelphia for Sunday's game vs. Houston. On a side note,LF Frank Thomas out with back spasms the past couple of weeks is expected to back in the lineup today or tomorrow.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

While I go through the years in my "history" thread, would you like for me to jot down the Phillies' team leaders?

That's also a pretty good trade at that time in their careers.

(Note: MR Dennis Bennett went on to be a part of the pitching staff for the 1967 "Impossible Dream" Boston Red Sox.)

2 Late Runs Push Phils Past Colts 5-3
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila Pa-In a well played exciting contest, the Phillies were able edge the Colt .45's 5-3 on the strength of a 7th inning RBI single by Rich Allen which gave the homeboys the lead for good,Clay Dalrymple would add an insurance home run in the 8th which sealed the deal.Starting pitcher John Boozer pitched well earning his 4th victory of the season and Johnny Klippstein got the save.So far this season, the Phillies and Colts have played six games with each team winning 3 and more often than not,the games have come down to the last couple of at bats. For Houston, starting pitcher Larry Dierker went 7+ innings while allowing 9 hits and 5 earned runs, his record falls to 4 and 5.At the plate, firstbaseman Walt Bond got the scoring started with a two run homer, and Rusty Staub was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI.Here's the box score.

Cater and Allen Honored with Awards!

Philadelphia Phillies rookie first baseman Danny Cater and second year man Rich Allen were honored with rookie of the month and player of the month respectively for the month of May.Rookie Cater played in 29 games last month and batted a whopping .351 with 6 doubles 3 home runs,25 RBI and 16 runs scored. For Allen, this looks to be the first of many,as his star is most definitely on the rise.In May,Allen batted a ridiculous .404 with 10 home runs,38 RBI and 26 runs scored.he also had an OBP of .439 With players like these, the Phils are in for a long and productive future.
