Anderson Outduels Short,3-1

Shea Stadium,Queens-The lowly Mets handed the Phils their 2nd straight defeat today dropping the Phillies record to an even 3-3.Both starters were excellent but the Mets Craig Anderson was just a little better as he evened his record to 1-1.Anderson went 7 and a third innings allowing 8 hits and only 1 earned run.The Mets got all the offense they would need in the fourth inning when after a Joe Christopher lead off double,Jesse Gonder singled giving the Mets second and third with no outs.Short then got Jim Hickman to strike out but George Altman and Larry Burright hit back to back singles giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. The Phils would close the gap to 2-1 in the 7th when Richie Allen singled home Bobby Wine for his 8th RBI of the season but the Fightins' would get no closer. The Mets added an insurance run in the eighth and went on to win 3-1.Phils starter Chris Short went 7 full allowing 8 hits and 3 runs while walking 4 and striking out 7.His record falls to 1-1.Here's the box score.

Covington And Amaro Traded To Pittsburgh

Philadelphia,Pa.-The rumors had been circulating for a few days now but today the inevitable happened. The Phillies have traded 32 year old left fielder Wes Covington and 28 year old shortstop Ruben Amaro to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 23 year old shortstop Gene Alley. When asked about the move,Phils Gm John Gindville explained that he was taking the team in another direction."I believe you win in this league with defense and pitching"said Gindville "and by making this trade we become dramaticaly better defensively at 3 positions,LF,1B and SS"."I really believe now we have a team to challenge for a pennant".Covington has a lifetime batting average of .286 with 104 home runs and 395 RBI in 9 big league seasons but his struggles in the field made him expendable.Alley on the other hand in in his first big league season. His scouting report says he's an excellent fielder with a good to very good bat and good speed.

Phillies Edge Pirates 6-5 In 13 Inning Classic

Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa-In a game that had just about everything, the Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 improving their record to 5 and 3 one game behind first place Cincinnati. After going scoreless for the first three innings, the Pirates got on the board first when Willie Stargell and Don Clendonen hit back to back doubles off of Phils starter Dennis Bennett bringing in the first run of the game.Clendonen would also score later in the inning courtesy of a Bill Mazeroski single giving Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead after 4.The Pirates would increase their lead to 4-0 through 5 and a half when in the Phils half of the 6th,Frank Thomas would hit a bases loaded two out double clearing the bases and drawing the Phillies to within 4-3 after six.A two run double by Rich Allen in the 7th would give the Phillies a 5-4 lead, one they would take into the 9th inning. The Pirates would not go down easy. With Phils closer Jack Baldschun in the game, the Pirates would tie the game on a Jim Pagliaroni double forcing extra innings. After the Pirates went down easily in the top of the 10th,the Phillies would load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning only to have two runners thrown out at the plate followed by an inning ending pop-up.Phils rookie pitcher Rick Wise who entered the game in the 10th,was tremendous in the extra frames going 4 innings while allowing 4 hits and striking out two. With Wise in command, the Phils would finally win it for him in the bottom of the 13th when with runners on second and third and no outs,Gene Alley smacked a game winning single up the middle giving Rick Wise a victory in his first ever Major League Game. Here's the box score.

Mahaffey Walks The Plank!
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila,Pa-Phillies starting pitcher Art Mahaffey(1-1) was absolutely terrible today as the Pirates tagged him for 12 hits and 9 earned runs in just 5 and two thirds innings in Pittsburgh's 10-4 victory. With the game tied at 4 after 5 innings,it looked as though we were in for another game that would go down to the wire, the Pirates had other ideas. In the top of the sixth the Bucs exploded for 6 runs on 6 hits effectively putting the game out of reach. Vern Law started and got the win for Pittsburgh going the distance while allowing 10 hits and 4 earned runs.Willie Stargell and Roberto Clemente had 2 RBI each to lead the Pirates. The Pirates improve their record to 4-4 while the Phils fall to 5-4.Here's the box score.
