Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

After a winter of celebrating their first championship in franchise history, the Phils get down to the business of defending that title, and to do that they went and added a few new parts while subtracting a few others. As the Phils break camp and head north after a pretty mediocre 10-14 spring training there are quite a few questions that will need to be resolved over the coming season.First of all,How will the Phillies respond to being the hunted rather than the hunter?,they'll no longer be able to sneak up on people like they did last season. Will Richie Allen and Danny Cater be able to duplicate what they did last season? The chances of this happening are pretty slim so how will the team compensate? How will surprising 5th starter Steve Carlton handle the spotlight? These are just a few of the things to look for as the 1965 season gets underway. So without further adieu,LET'S PLAY BALL!!!

Astros Victorious In Home Opener 3-2
The Astrodome,Houston,Tx.-Opening day is finally here, and there was no better place to be than here in Houston where the newly named Houston Astros welcomed to town the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies to christen their new 42,217 seat state of the art domed stadium which has officially been named the Astrodome. The new look Astros sent free agent acquisition Billy O'Dell to the mound to face off against Phillies ace Chris Short who is coming off the first 20 win season of his career. The Phillies started quickly, scoring a run in the top of the first when new first baseman Wes Parker doubled home Johnny Callison giving the Phillies a 1-0 lead. The Astros though came right back to score 2 of their own first inning runs when Felipe Alou slammed a two out triple to right scoring Zoilo Versalles and Jimmy Wynn giving Houston a 2-1 lead after one inning of play. Both pitchers would then proceed to trade scoreless innings until the 6th when a Rich Allen one out double followed by a Wes Parker single gave the Phils first and third for Cookie Rojas.Rojas then grounded weakly to first scoring Allen and tying the game at 2 after 6.Entering the bottom of the 7th,the Phillies sent rookie reliever Grant "Buck" Jackson to the mound for his first career appearance, the Astros were not kind. After getting the first two batters to ground out and fly out,"Zorro" Versalles and Don Pavelitch hit back to back doubles giving the Astros a 3-2 lead before a Jimmy Wynn fly out ended the inning.Following a 1-2-3 eighth,Phillies second baseman Cookie Rojas led off the 9th with a wicked triple down the left field line giving the Phillies a golden opportunity to tie the game, but it wasn't to be as Clay Dalrymple flied out to short center,Gene Alley popped up and pinch hitter Lee Maye,a former Colt .45 struck out to end the game.Reliever Danny Coombs was credited with the win,Buck Jackson the loss and Ed Roebuck the save. Here's the box score.

More Big Stories From Opening Day!

Monday, April 12th, 1965: Fairly Batters California Big Time
It wasn't just another day at the ballpark for Ron Fairly. It was a very special day, one that many players never experience. But he did. Fairly went on a tear and cracked hit after hit off California pitching.

When the dust settled on the diamond at Cleveland Stadium, he had a career 5-6 day and something he will long remember. And the Cleveland Indians had a 17-0 victory over the Angels.

"Yeah, it'll be something nice to tell the grandkids, but it won't get me a hit tomorrow," he joked in the postgame interview.

R. Fairly hit an RBI double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit a two-run double in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and grounded out in the 9th.

Monday, April 12th, 1965: Roberts Records Shutout Against New York
Robin Roberts of the Minnesota Twins shut out the New York Yankees 6-0, stopped them on 5 hits and had 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in a strong outing.

After the game his manager said, "He just came out and was on the attack from the first pitch he threw. When Robin stays ahead in the count, he does well. That's the key."

Phils Win A Wild One 5-4 But Lose Bunning For Up To Two Weeks

Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-They hung the World Championship Pennant, they handed out the rings and then they played one whale of a ballgame that kept you on the edge of your seat until the very last out!The Giants came out bats a swinging today, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits and an error in the top of the first inning. The Phils would get to within 2 in the 4th when Clay Dalrymple singled home Wes Parker making it 3-1.It would stay that way until the 7th when the Phillie bats finally woke up with 4 hits including a Rich Allen 2 run double that tied the game at 3.,in the 8th,the Phillies would tack on two more when Johnny Callison singled home Tony Gonzalez and Lee Maye giving the Phillies a 5-3 lead heading into the 9th.Grant Jackson entered in the 9th and promptly hit the first batter he faced and walked the second giving the Giants first and second with no outs.Jackson bore down though striking out the next two batters but a Jose Cardenal RBI single closed the gap to 5-4 with runners on the corners for slugger Willie McCovey. With the count 3-2,Jackson blew a fastball by McCovey striking him out looking earning the first save of his career. On a down note,Phillies starting pitcher Jim Bunning strained a back muscle and could miss up to two starts. Here's the box score.

In Other Games Today

Wednesday, April 14th, 1965: Fairly Torches Athletics for 6 Hits
"Believe it or not," said Cleveland right fielder Ron Fairly, "they threw me some good pitches today."

That would be hard to believe for anyone who saw him dispose of the Athletics with a great 6-hit performance.

"He made it look easy," said the Kansas City manager, who saw his team fall to the Cleveland Indians, 21-11. "Hats off to him!"

Wednesday, April 14th, 1965: Houston Blanks New York Behind Johnson
Houston starter Ken Johnson really did a number on the Mets today, shutting them out 2-0 on 4 hits in a complete game victory. He issued 3 walks and had 4 strikeouts.

In his postgame comments, the New York manager said, "We didn't have good at-bats. I don't make excuses, but when we were playing the game, our energy didn't show. That comes from either extremely good pitching or extremely lousy hitting... seeing as our team has a bunch of pretty good hitters, I have to tip my cap to Ken... he did an outstanding job today."

Phillies Slay Giants 11-2
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-In a bit of a stinker, the Phillies destroyed the Giants today 11-2 to improve to 2-1 on the season. For the second straight game,San Francisco were let down by their pitching staff who allowed a combined 16 hits and 10 earned runs to a Phillies team that pretty much relies on their pitching staff to win games. For the Phillies,Johnny Callison continued his hot start going 3 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBI,catcher Clay Dalrymple also had a fine day going 4 for 5 with an RBI and 3 runs scored.Starting pitcher Claude Osteen earned his first victory going 7 and a third and allowing 5 hits and an earned run. Here's the box score.

In Other Action Around The Majors

Thursday, April 15th, 1965: Giusti Whitewashes Mets
Dave Giusti bent a little, but he didn't break against the Mets. The Houston pitcher hurled a 2-hit 5-0 shutout in a fine performance, surrendering 2 walks and putting up 7 strikeouts.

"Dave is good at getting out of jams," his manager told reporters after the game. "He's almost more effective when he gets guys on-base or gets behind in the count, because he uses your aggressiveness against you."

Thursday, April 15th, 1965: Cubs Holtzman Silences Milwaukee
Before the game Ken Holtzman liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Cubs pitcher whitewashed the Milwaukee Braves 8-0.

Holtzman said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."

The Chicago starter held Milwaukee scoreless, giving up 5 hits while registering 8 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.

"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Braves manager said in his postgame interview.

"When that happens, you usually lose."
