Friday August 14,1964

Bunning Overpowers Mets In 8-0 Whitewash!
Shea Stadium New York,NY.- In what can only be called an embarassment of a game, the Phillies showed the Mets just how far away they are from serious contention as the absolutely dominated New York in every facet of the game to win 8-0.Phils starter Jim Bunning pitched his fourth complete game in his last five starts allowing only 5 hits while striking out 10 as he improves his record to 13-8.Bob Purkey was saddled with the loss.Phillies shortstop Gene Alley had a wonderful day at the plate going 4 for 5 with 2 RBI and a run scored and first baseman Danny Cater showed signs of breaking out of his slump by going 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI.The Phillies will play two more against the Mets before heading home for series' against the Cubs and Pirates. Here's the box score.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Monday August 17,1964

Ecstacy And Agony!
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-The Phillies and Cubs waged a back and forth battle today that had a little of everything, including extra innings.Tony Gonzalez got the game rolling today with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first to give the Phils a quick 1-0 lead. The Cubs answered with 3 of their own in the 3rd on a 2 run double by Ron Santo that was followed by a John Boccabella RBI single giving Chicago a 3-1 lead. The lead was short lived however as Richie Allen blasted a 2 run homer to left to tie the game at 3 after 3.Over the next 4 innings, the Cubs built a 7-4 lead that looked like it might hold but in the bottom of the 9th,the Phils started the inning with walk, strikeout, walk ground out. Then with two outs and two on,Johnny Callison hit a 2 run single that was followed by singles from Dick Allen and Clay Dalrymple and all of a sudden we are tied at 7 and headed to extras. The euphoria was short lived however,as Cubs left fielder Gene Oliver slammed a John Tsitouris pitch into the left field seats giving the Cubs all they would need to win the game 8-7.Lindy Mcdaniel was credited with the win and John Tsitouris the loss. Here's the box score.

Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-Phils starting pitcher Chris Short was dominant once again winning his 17th game of the season with a complete game 4 hit shutout of the Chicago Cubs.Short is now just 3 wins away from becoming the Phillies first twenty game winner since Robin Roberts went 23-15 in 1955.The lone run of the game was scored on a Bobby Richardson RBI single in the 2nd that brought home Richie Allen who doubled earlier in the inning to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. Here's the box score.

Phillies Edge Cubs 8-7 In Another Barnburner
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-In what is becoming a routine happening between these two clubs,we had lots of hits, lots of runs, and a great ending in which the Phillies came out on top,8-7.The Cubs came out on fire, pounding Phils starter Jim Bunning for 7 hits and 4 runs in their first two at bats, but the Phils answered right back scoring 6 second inning runs to end the frame winning 6-4.Both teams would settle and no one would score again until the 7th when a John Boccabella 2 run single tied the game up heading to the 8th.In the top of the 8th,the Cubs would grab the lead again when Gene Oliver went deep off of Phils reliever Rick Wise giving Chicago a 7-6 lead.In the bottom half of the inning, the Phillies grabbed the lead for good when following a Rich Allen leadoff triple and Clay Dalrymple base on balls,Ken Berry hit a sac fly to tie the game. After Cookie Rojas flied out for the second out of the inning,Gene Alley slapped a base hit to left giving the Phils first and second with two outs for pitcher Wade Blasingame who singled to right scoring Dalrymple, but an alert play by right fielder Billy Williams nailed Alley trying for third ending the 8th with the Phillies in front 8-7.Blasingame and closer Jack Baldschun combined to pitch a scoreless 9th giving the Phils the victory. Here's the box score.
