Phils Fall In Get-Away Game 5-2
Connie Mack Stadium Phila,Pa.-In what can maybe be described as a "hangover" game, the Phillies and Cubs after playing two brilliant games yesterday, played a pretty nondescript game today and the Cubs came away victorious 5-2.Cubs starting pitcher Cal Koonce was the story today as he went 8 rocky innings allowing 11 hits but only 2 Phillies runs as he brings his victory total up to 2.For the Phils, starting pitcher Claude Osteen was definitely affected by the short rest between starts as he lasted only 5 innings while allowing 8 hits and 4 runs(3 earned) dropping his NL record to 3-1(8-7 overall). After a much needed day off,the Phillies head to St. Louis for a showdown with the Cardinals. With a record of 41-28,the Red Birds sit all alone in second place just a game and a half behind Cincinnati and a game and a half in front of the Phils(39-29).This is a huge series for both clubs that'll go a long way in showing how the top teams in the NL match-up with one another. In a side note, word has just come down from San Francisco that all world CF Willie Mays will be sidelined up to 3 weeks with what doctors are calling a scratched Cornea. This is a devastating blow to a Giant team that has been reeling as of late and have fallen 5 games behind the front running Reds.here's the box score from todays Phils-Cubs game

Gibson Outduels Culp In Battle Of Wills!
Sportsmans Park,St.Louis Mo.-In one whale of a pitching duel, the Cardinals Bob Gibson was just too much for the Phillies and Ray Culp as the Cardinals took game one of the series 3-1.The Phillies got on the board first courtesy of a 2nd inning Smokey Burgess passed ball that allowed Phils left fielder Frank Thomas to cruise home giving Philly and early 1-0 lead.Gibson, angry from the start became even more enraged and mowed the Phillies down for the rest of the game allowing only 7 hits and that 1 run while striking out 8.Ray Culp was doing some mowing of his own, until the bottom of the 7th when Cards first baseman Bill White tied the game with one swing of the bat homering to left field. The Cardinals would get to Culp again in the 8th when with one on and one out,Johnny Lewis homered to right giving St.Louis all they would need to take down the Phils. The teams face off again tomorrow with John Boozer scheduled to take on Ray Washburn. Here's the box score.

Phils All Over Washburn In 8-4 Victory
Sportsmans Park St.Louis Mo.-Cardinals starting pitcher Ray Washburn was not at his best today as the Phillies lit him up to the tune of 7 hits and 7 earned runs in just an inning and a third as the Phillies rolled to a convincing 8-4 victory.Richie Allen continued his assault on the National League going 3 for 5 with a double 2 RBI and a run scored. On the hill,Phils starter John Boozer pitched well through four but was roughed up for 4 runs in the 5th inning before being lifted for ace reliever John Tsitouris who stopped the bleeding and earned the win by going three and two thirds without allowing a hit.here's the box score.

Slugfest In St. Louis!
Sportsmans Park,St.Louis Mo.-In a good old fashioned slugfest, the Phillies and Cardinals combined for 17 runs on 32 hits with the Phillies ending up on top,9-8 in game one of todays doubleheader.St.Louis opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a 2 run Bill White Homer. After a scoreless 2nd,the Phils scored in 5 straight innings building a seemingly insurmountable 7-2 after 6 and a half. But in the bottom of the 7th after 2 quick outs,Lee Maye came to the plate and reached first on an error by Danny Cater.Following Maye, pitcher Ray Sadecki singled and right fielder Johnny Lewis walked loading the bases for Jerry Buchek who put a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall igniting the crowd as he pumped his fist running the bases. With Philly clinging to a 7-6 lead in the 8th,the Cardinals would again load the bases with two outs, this time though reliever Johnny Klippstein got Charlie James looking ending the threat. The Phils would add 2 runs in the 9th when Adolfo Philips hit his first career home run,a 2 run shot the widened the lead to 9-6.in the bottom of the 9th,Bill White would strike again with another 2 run homer but the game would end one batter later when Mike Shannon grounded out to first. With the win,the Phils guarantee themselves at least a split of the 4 game series as well as a chance to take 3 of 4 and move ahead of the Cardinals in th standings. Here's the box score.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Sunday June 28,1964
Short Wins 10th!
Sportsmans Park St.Louis Mo.-Phils starter Chris Short earned his 10th victory today thanks to a hugh 3 run home run by Gene Alley in the top of the 8th that broke a 1-1 tie and gave Philadelphia a well deserved 4-2 victory. After a scoreless first inning, both team got a run in the 2nd,the Phils on a Ken Berry RBI single and the Cards on a Paul Gagliano sac fly. After that it was all pitching as Chris Short and Ernie Broglio battled mano a mano.Short would go 8 innings and allow 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 4.He runs his record to 10-4,Bobby Locke earned his 4th save. For the cards,Broglio went 6 strong innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 2,he wouldn't factor in the decision.Reliever Ron Taylor was saddled with the loss, his second. Here's the box score.
