Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Phils Acquire Left Handed Reliever from Milwaukee
Phila.Pa-In a move made to serve two purposes, the Phillies sent disgruntled reliever Dallas Green along with veteran catcher Gus Triandos and youngster Dave Bennett to the Milwaukee Braves for left handed reliever Wade Blasingame.By making this move, the Phillies get a left handed arm in the bullpen which they didn't have, and they finally get to promote young catching prospect Pat Corrales who really should have been in the bigs but was being held back by Triandos. To make room for Blasingame and Corrales, the Phils sent young Rick Wise back down to get more seasoning down in triple A.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Thursday June 18,1964
3 Run 8th Propels Cubs Past Phillies
Wrigley Field Chicago Ill.-On the strength of a three run eighth inning, the Chicago Cubs were able to snatch a 5-4 victory away from the red hot Phillies thus avoiding a series sweep. With the game tied at 2 after 7, Phillies SS Gene Alley hit a line drive 2 run homer to left giving Philadelphia a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the 8th inning. In the Cubs half of the inning,Ellis Burton drew a lead-off walk that was followed by a Ron Campbell infield single and all of a sudden the Cubs were in business.Billy Williams then came to the plate and hit a sharp ground ball to Danny Cater at first who then bobbled the ball giving Chicago the bases loaded with nobody out. After a Ron Santo Sac fly and a Lou Brock pop-up,the Phillies still clung to a 4-3 lead with two outs and runners on first and third.John Boccabella then came to the plate and cracked a clutch 2 run double to right center giving Chicago the lead going into the 9th.In the top of the 9th,Cubs relief pitcher Wayne Schurr put the Phils down in order running his record to 5-1.Jim Bunning was tagged with the loss, his 6th and Bobby Locke charged with a blown save. The Phils now head to Shea for a 4 game series with the Mets. Here's the box score.

Short Dominates Mets Again In 6-1 Victory
Shea Stadium NY,NY.-Since getting off to a slow start in April,Phillies starter Chris Short has been nothing short of phenomenal racking up an 8-4 record including 4 straight victories in June.In today's game,Short went 7 and two thirds allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 6,in the 6-1 victory.Reliever John Tsitouris pitched the final inning and a third without incident. At the plate, second baseman Tony Taylor and right fielder Johnny Callison each had three hits as the Phillies used their speed on the basepaths to force New York into run scoring mistakes. Here's the box score.

Phils Fall In 15 Innings,4-3

Shea Stadium NY,NY.-In a comedy of errors, the Phillies bungled their way through 15 innings of sloppy baseball on their way to an ugly 4-3 defeat at the hands of the lowly Mets.Early on,neither team did much of anything as both Claude Osteen and Mudcat Grant had good stuff resulting in a 1-0 Met lead after 7.In the top of the 8th,the Phillies rallied for 2 runs courtesy of a Clay Dalrymple solo shot and a Cookie Rojas RBI single. The Mets came right back in the bottom half when with 2 outs and a man on first,Phillies reliever Wade Blasingame entered and made his Phillies debut one to remember as he allowed back to back singles to Ed Kranepool and Amado Samuel tying the game at 2 and giving Wade a blown save. The game would remain tied at 2 until the top of the 13th when Left Fielder Frank Thomas hit a solo home run giving the Phillies a 3-2 lead, but a costly Cookie Rojas throwing error in the bottom of the inning led to a game tying ground out by Amado Samuel. The game would finally come to an end in the bottom of the 15th when after a leadoff single by Jim Hickman, right fielder Ed Kranepool laid down a sacrifice bunt that catcher Clay Dalrymple picked up and threw into right field giving NY 2nd and 3rd with no outs, for Amado Samuel who singled home the winning run with his third RBI of the game. Here's the box score.

Phils Bounce Back To Take Game 1 Of Twin Bill 5-2
Shea Stadium NY,NY.-After an all around poor effort on Saturday afternoon, the Phillies played flawless defensive baseball en route to a pretty 5-2 victory in game one of todays doubleheader. As bad as the Phils were on Saturday, thats how good they were on Sunday and they needed to be because the Mets gave Philadelphia all they could handle and then some as Mets starter Jim Purkey was phenomenal through 8 keeping the Mets to within 3-2,but with Purkey tiring, the Phils were able to add some insurance in the 9th to put the game away. For the Phillies, starter John Boozer gave his all, going 7+ innings while allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs improving his record to 5-4.Johnny Klippstein earned his 4th save going 2 perfect innings. Here's the box score.

Sunday June 21,1964
Callison Single Beats Mets In 10th 4-3!
Shea Stadium NY,NY.-With two on and two out in the top of the 10th,Phillies slugger Johnny Callison came through with a base hit to center to give the Phillies a come from behind 4-3 victory giving them a sweep of todays doubleheader!New York jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Ed Kranepool led the way with a single,a triple and 2 RBI but the Fightins' would not go away.To start the comeback, veteran firstbaseman Roy Sievers hit a mammoth 2 run home run in the 5th drawing the Phils to within a run, then in the top of the 7th,catcher Clay Dalrymple hit a rare triple scoring Sievers bringing the Phils even.Phillies pitching took over from there as Ray Culp,Wade Blasingame and Bobby Locke combined to go 6 and two thirds innings while allowing a mere 3 hits and 0 runs.Locke was credited with the win although it was a definite staff effort. The Phillies record now stands at an impressive 38-27 good enough for 2nd place,a game and a half behind stubborn Cincinnati. Here's the box score.

Phillies And Cubs Split Scintillating DoubleHeader!
Connie Mack Stadium Phila,Pa.-If you were a paying customer for today's twin bill between the Phillies and the Chicago Cubs, you walked away knowing full well that that was the best $1.95 that you ever spent because they were two of the most entertaining games you'll ever see on a baseball diamond. And better yet,you had the best of both worlds: In game one you had a back and forth slugfest that needed extra frames to decide the outcome, and in the second game you had a tense pitching duel that had you on the edge of your seat until literally the final out.In game one,The Phillies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after 3 but the Cubs would answer in the top of the 4th when with 2 outs, a Billy Williams single to right was followed by a Lou Brock double giving Chicago 2nd and 3rd for SS Andre Rodgers who hit a game tying single to center before Billy Cowan grounded out to end the inning. The Cubs would score twice more in the 5th courtesy of a two on one out double by Ron Campbell followed by a sac fly by third baseman Ron Santo. After five innings it was 4-2 Chicago. The Phillies would come right back in the 6th with 3 runs of their own giving starter Jim Bunning a one run cushion going into the 7th inning.Over the next two innings neither team would threaten and we headed into the 9th with the Phils still ahead,5-4.Leading off the 9th,Cubs CF Billy Cowan hit a 469 foot monster home run tying the game at 5 and forcing extra innings.Neither team would score until the top of the 12th when with runners on first and second and one out,Phillie killer Billy Williams got his third hit of the ballgame bringing home the go ahead run off of reliever Ryne Duren.Duren would escape the inning without allowing any more damage and the Phillies were down to their last three outs. After a Tony Gonzalez ground out to short,RF Johnny Callison crushed a double to the gap in right center and the Phillies were in business.Richie Allen then hit a line drive single to left forcing Callison to hold up at third bringing Frank Thomas to the plate with runners on the corners and 1 out. With the count run to 3-2,Cubs reliever Wayne Schurr struck Thomas right on out of there deflating the entire stadium,Danny Cater would ground out to end the game giving Chicago a 6-5 victory. Here's the box score.

Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa-Despite playing for the fourth time in three days, the Phillies were able to hold off the Chicago Cubs due in large part to the gutsy performances by Chris Short and Art Mahaffey who combined to hold the Cubs to 6 hits and 1 run in Philadelphia's 2-1 victory. With the win, the Phils were able to split today's twin bill. The Phillies offense was provided by a Gene Alley solo home run in the second and a Danny Cater two out single in the bottom of the 5th.Chicago's lone run came coutresy of a Ron Campbell RBI single in the 6th.As for Short,he has now run his record to an impressive 9-4 with a 2.53 ERA and 89 strikeouts,he leads the team in all three categories. Here's the box score.
