Bunning Dominant In 9-0 Victory Over Mets

Connie Mack Stadium Phila Pa.-On opening day,Jim Bunning faced off against his old teammate Cal McLish and McLish got the better of Jim as the Mets won 3-0.Today Bunning returned the favor holding the Mets to only 5 hits enroute to a rousing 9-0 complete game victory.Offensively, the Phils chipped and chipped and built a comfortable 5-0 lead before chasing McLish after 7 and saddling him with his 6th loss of the season. The Phillies really broke it open in the 8th as they torched Mudcat Grant for 4 runs and 4 hits including a Johnny Callison homer. For the game Callison was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.Rich Allen also had a big day going 3 for 5 while knocking in his league leading 60th run.The teams will finish up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. Here's the box score.

Phils Complete 4 Game Sweep Of Mets With 6-2 Victory
Connie Mack Stadium Phila Pa.-In an awesome display of overpowering pitching, the Phillies completed a dominating 4 game sweep of the New York Mets with a 6-2 victory in the second game of today's doubleheader.Down a run after 3 and a half, the Phillies bats came alive in the 4th when Johnny Callison hit a lead off single followed by a Richie Allen RBI triple then two more base hits by Frank Thomas and Roy Sievers. Before the inning would end they would have 2 more hits and a total of 4 runs. The Phils would add insurance runs in the 6th and 7th but they were hardly nescessary as Claude Osteen was in total control earning his third victory in as many starts. For the game,Osteen went the distance and allowed 9 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 5 and walking 0.For the series, the Mets were outscored 25 to 4 and were also held scoreless for an embrassing 24 straight innings. With the sweep, the Phillies improve their record to 33 and 25,good enough for 2nd place only 2 games behind the front running Reds. The Giants and Cardinals are right there as well with records of 34-27 and 33-27 respectively. Here's todays game 2 box score.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Tuesday June 16,1964
Dogfight In Wrigley!
Wrigley Field Chicago Ill.-Today,the Phillies and Cubs reminded anyone who watched the game why baseball is the national pastime. The game couldn't have started out any worse for Philadelphia when in the bottom of the 1st inning after getting two quick outs,Phillies starter John Boozer faced off against the dynamic duo of Billy Williams, and Ron Santo, the Chicago superstars would win out.Williams laced a single to right, and Santo followed it up with a majestic home run onto Waveland Avenue, and just like that it was 2-0 Cubbies. The Phils would finally get on the board in the top of the 4th when after a Tony Gonzalez strikeout,Danny Cater and Johnny Callison hit back to back singles putting runners on the corners.Richie Allen would bring Cater home with a ground out RBI cutting the lead to 2-1.It would stay that way until the bottom of the 6th when Biily Williams smoked his 14th homer of the year giving Chicago a 3-1 lead.In the top of the 8th,the Phils would quickly load the bases with one out setting the stage for Tony Gonzalez, who would come through with a clutch RBI single,Danny Cater followed with a Sac fly and the inning would end, tied at 3.In the bottom of the 8th,Cubs CF Ellis Burton led off the inning with Chicago's third home run of the game giving the Cubs a 4-3 lead heading into the 9th inning.Frank Thomas led off the 9th inning with a ground out to third and the Phillies chances seemed slim.Cookie Rojas came to the plate next and smoked a wicked double to left,Dalrymple would follow with a routine grounder to first that was terribly misplayed by firstbaseman Billy Cowan allowing Rojas to score and forcing extra frames. The game would remain tied at 4 until the top of the 12th when Phils CF Tony Gonzalez loopd a one out single to center,Danny Cater's ground out would move Gonzalez along setting the stage for Johnny Callison who cool as a cucumber, smacked a hard ground ball inbto left giving the Phillies a 5-4 lead. The bottom of the 12th was all Bobby Locke and the Phillies had a thrilling come from behind 5-4 victory in Chicago! On top of that, the Reds fell to the high powered Giants leaving the phillies just a game and a half out of first place!!!Here's the box score.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Blazing Phillies Win for the 8th Time In 9 Games!
Wrigley Field Chicago Ill.-There seems to be no stopping the Phillies now, their confidence is sky high and they're playing like every game is their last which is exactly how manager Gene Mauch likes it.In today's game,Phillie starter Ray Culp flirted with a no hitter as he held the Cubs hitless through 5 as his teammates were giving him a 4-0 cushion. In the bottom of the 6th however, after a leadoff ground out,Ron Campbell and Billy Williams would go deep back to back breaking up the no-no as well as the shutout.Culp would regain his composure and finish with a line of 7 and a third IP,3 hits and 2 earned runs.Johnny Klippstein would get the save going the final inning and two thirds while allowing only two hits. For Culp it was his 6th victory against 3 defeats and for Klippstein its his 3rd save. Here's the box score.

I've just reached 10 games over .500 for the first time this year at 35-25.As of today I'm only a half game behind first place Cincinnati who have been leading the way since April!
