Max Drive Walkthrough...

I know there has been an elevated amount of MD talk recently here, and I have had a number of people PM me asking about how to exactly transfer files from your computer to the PS2 using it, so I thought I'd do something useful and post this walkthrough that I did back during the summer. Keep in mind that I did do this in June or whenever it was that I first got mine for use with NCAA 2005, so it could be a little bit dated. I highly doubt it is though, as I believe the MD programs still look the same. One other thing, I also haven't read through it since I originally posted it, so it may be a little confusing. If you have any questions or problems, jsut ask.

Anyways, here it is...
Quote:
Ok, here's a visual walkthrough...

Ok, there are a couple sites you can go through to get your files, and a couple of ways you can get them onto the Max Drive, I'll go through a few...

(Make sure that the little "lock/unlock" switch on the side of your Max Drive is set to unlock before doing all this, by the way.)

First, is by going to CodeJunkies.com, simply go to the saves section and find the game that you want. Here, I'm on the NCAA 2005 page, and I've found the file that I want. So, I right-click on it.

Choose "Save Target As..." and I'll get the "Save As" dialog box.

From there, I'l stick my Max Drive into one of my computer's USB ports.

See, there it is.

The PC should automatically detect it, whether you have the software installed or not. (I'll go through the software in a second.) You can go to "My Computer" on your desktop to see if it has.

Next, you double-click on the icon, and it will bring up an, I'll assume, empty window. Then, you'll take the file you just downloaded, mine is saved on the desktop for easy access, and drag it into the Max Drive window. You can either left-click and do it, or right-click and choose "Copy Here" like I did.

Then, you'll have the file on your Max Drive.

You're done with your PC if you choose to do it this way.
But, you can also use the Max Drive program to get your files. It's a little more complicated, but here's how it works.

You open up the program, and should get a window that resembles this one.

From there you are going to want to have the program connect to the Internet, and get your file from the CodeJunkies server. Once that's done, you have this...

Looks just like what we had before, right?

Now, you choose the file that you want, left-click and hold, and drag it over and drop it into where it says "MAXDRIVE" on the left...

Now, if you took that route, we're done with the PC.

Onto the PS2 we go.

There you see that I've got the Max Drive disc for the PS2 in, and my Max Drive in one of the USB slots.

I'll boot up my PS2, and after going through the little lead-in video and the loading screen, have this...

I'll choose the "My Devices" option, and it'll take me to this screen...

I'm going to choose my Max Drive, because that is where the file that I want to transfer is stored.

After doing that, I'll be here...

You'll have a list of the files on your Max Drive on the left, Press X to select the ones you want to move.

Then, you will press the right arrow on your PS2 controller, and go over to the very bottom, to the "Uncrush" option...

Choose the memory card you want to transfer your file to, I've chosen my first one...

Press X to select it, and you'll get this dialog box asking to confirm the transfer...

The bar at the top of the screen will fill-up, and once it's full, the file has been moved.

You may want to go back to the "device selection" screen after and choose your memory card, just to make sure the file is on there...

And there it is.
Hope it helps. If there is enough demand for another one, I may updated it. I especially want to get some new caps of the PS2 program since the old ones are from my digital camera instead of from my capture card. But, anyways.

Re: Max Drive Walkthrough...

Ok, here's the better (re: updated) one...

First, find the file that you want to download. In this case, I'll be using Blacklover's recent

CH file. So, I'll right-click it, and choose "Save Target As..."

Next up is choosing where to save the file, giving it a name, etc. I'll save it to my desktop

just to make it easier to access.

And there it is, the zipped file, right on my desktop.

Next is extracting the .max file that is located within the zipped file. Depending on the program

you are using (WinZip, WinRar, etc.) it may look a little different than mine, but just drag the

file to the desktop.

And there we are, nice and situated right on my desktop.

Now comes the time to plug in my Max Drive, pretty easy stuff.

Depending on your setup, your MD may show up automatically, or you may have to go to My Computer

to open it.

So, double-click on My Computer, and there your MD should be.

Double-click on it to open it up.

Now, we're going to drag the .max file from the desktop onto the MD.

And, like such, the file is there.

We're now done with the PC, onto the PS2 we go.

Boot-up the Max Memory program for the PS2, and you'll be greated by this menu. We're gonna choose My Devices and move onto the next screen.

Which will bring us here, with the memory cards and the MD as options. We're gona choose the MD.

Which will take us to a screen which has all of our MD files on it. In this case, it's just the CH 2K5 rosters we just put on it.

Since that's the file we want, press X to select it.

After doing that, move over to the right side of the screen where the file options are. Go all the way down to Uncrush, and choose the memory card you want the file on.

This prompt will show up, and we're gonna choose "Yes."

Then the program will begin the process of uncrushing the file to the memory card.

Once done, press the triangle button to go back to the device selection screen. We're gonna check the memory card, just to make sure that our file is there.

And sure enough, there it is. Ready to be loaded once you start up CH 2K5.

Hope this helps more than the other one.

Re: Max Drive Walkthrough...

By the way, if you have any problems with your Max Drive not being recognized by your computer, the drivers that are included in the latest software update from Datel (here) should solve that problem.

Re: Max Drive Walkthrough...

Also, it should be stated that MD and Xport/Sharkport files are interchangeable, but it takes a certain program to be able to do this.

If you have a .max file which you wish to use for your Xport or Sharkport, here are the steps you need to take.

First, download the File Converter that's at the bottom of this post.

Then, open it up. Here's what it looks like:

You're going to go to "File" an choose the option to load a Max Drive file.

After you have chosen the .max file that you want, you'll see the file's information listed in the program.

You are then going to go back to "File" and choose the option to save the file as an Xport (.xps) file.

You'll receive the "Save as.." prompt, and after giving your file a name, you are done. You can then load the file using your Xport and transfer it to your PS2.

However, if you have a Sharkport, there is one other step you need to take. Since Sharkport files have a different extentions (.sps) than Xport files (.xps) you will need to edit the file so that it will be read by the Sharkport.

Simply right-click on the file, and choose "rename" (or simply press F2 with the file selected) and change the .xps extention so that it reads .sps instead. Now you are ready to use the file with your Sharkport.

Now, here are the steps if you wish to use a Sharkport/Xport file with your Max Drive.

(If you have a Sharkport file, you don't need to change it to an Xport file if you are going to convert it to use with the Max Drive. The converter program can load files wish the .sps extension.)

Now, you are going to take that file, and load it back into our converted like we did before. Instead of loading a Max Drive (.max) file, however, we're going to load an Xport file.

After selecting your .xps or .sps file, we're going to get a screen that looks just like the one we had when we loaded the .max file before.

You're going to go back to "File" and this time, you're going to choose the option to save the file as a Max Drive file.

And you're done. You're now ready to load this file onto your Max Drive and uncrush it onto your PS2.

Re: Max Drive Walkthrough...

WARNING

Also, beware that there are a number of instances where your memory card can be whiped clear by your Max Drive. Do not attempt to overwrite a file on your memory card by uncrushing from the MD. You must delete the original file on your memory card first. Second, do not power down your PS2 while the Max Memory program is on one of the device screens. You can only do this if you are on the program's main menu screen.

If your memory card is cleared, you cannot do anything to it (uncrush to, save to, etc.) until you have formatted. To do this, press the square button on the screen where you have seleted your device. This will completely clear the memory card, however, since the Max Drive has already cleared it, this only enables you to be able to actually use the card again.
