Who is the best coach to never win a National Championship?

Topic should be explanatory enough, who is the best coach in CFB to never actually win a National Championship? For simplicity sake lets define National Championship as one coming from the AP or the Coaches' Poll and disregard the smaller organizations who give out these awards.

Currently I would say the best coach without a championship would be Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech. Historically speakings I'd say Michigan's Bo Schembechler (sp) would be the best.

I think a case could be made for Butch Davis, since he was the one who built 2001-2002 Miami but then left for the NFL. But that is such a small window to look at I don't know if I could include him.

Bo. Amazing coach who somehow never won a title at Michigan.

I should smack you, MassNole... It's not Beamer, because he doesn't have the killer instinct that's necessary to win a national championship. I don't know who it is, but it ain't Frank.

Re: Who is the best coach to never win a National Championship?

Maybe Michigan fans can shed some light on this, but how in the world did he not win a National Championship while he was in Ann Harbor?

He had a career record of 194-48-5 for a winning percentage of .796. Looking at Nationalchamps.net it appears that Michigan won 2 MNC's from smaller awarding institutions (1973 & 1985). In 1973 Alabama and Notre Dame are credited with MNC's (Michigan and ND didn't play that year, they actually didn't play at all between 1943 and 1978 (why?). In 1985 Oklahoma won the MNC, which seems a shame for Bo given how corrupt that program was under Barry Switzer.

Well, I can't speak about Bo's time in Ann Harbor. Ann Arbor, on the other hand...

1970, started 9-0, lost to Ohio State, no bowl because of B10 rules at the time, only the champion went to a bowl.

1971, perfect regular season, lost to Stanford in the Rose Bowl by a point.

1972, started 10-0, lost to OSU, no bowl.

1973, UM and OSU tie 10-10, and the Rose Bowl vote goes to Ohio State thanks to the piece of **** Michigan State AD. UM finishes 10-0-1 and gets nothing to show for it.

1974, started 10-0, lost to OSU, no bowl.

1985, tied Illinois 3-3, lost #1 vs. #2 game @ Iowa on a last second FG, won Fiesta Bowl, finished #2 in the polls.

1986, started 9-0, lost to Minnesota by a FG, ended up losing the Rose Bowl to John Cooper.

Basically it was just a bunch of close calls but no cigars. Lots of close losses to go with a mentality that the Big Ten title was all that mattered.
