It wasn't broken when they changed things but look at it now...
It would also mean the ACC would be about to lose their BCS bid.

The highest rankings without the BE teams were 15 in 2004, 21 in 2005, 18 in 2006, 21 in 2007, and 21 in 2008.

VT and BC have carried the ACC in football, and the BE teams have combined for 5 tournament appearances in their last 12 attempts.

By taking away the two best teams in the conference the teams would probably be ranked higher.

The ACC has regressed, in fact.

And I don't expect a VT fan to care about the ACC, pre-expansion, because they weren't a member then. But for we fans that grew up here, that this is all we know, give us back what we had. At least peak the local interest if they can't keep the nation's attention.
I grew up here, too. Right smack dab in the middle of the VA/NC state line and I'm really glad the Hokies are members of the ACC because it makes it easier for me to see them play in person and they have more games on TV. Plus, it is cool to finally be able to take on the teams that are local to us like the schools in North Carolina. For as long as I can remember I've never had a co-worker who graduated from a Big East school other the WVU, but I have worked with plenty of alumni of ACC schools so the interest and attention given to the league has actually increased for me. Also, from the Tar Heel fans that I have talked they have enjoyed having the Hokies in the conference, too.

I know that Miami and FSU have floundered recently which has hurt the ACC on the national scene, but do you really think those two schools are going to stay down forever with all the talent in the state of Florida? Each conference goes through peaks and valleys and right now the ACC is going through one of those valleys.

As far as peaking the local interest goes. Doesn't Carolina still play NC State and Duke every year? I know they play Wake twice in every four year cycle and granted Wake has been better the last two years, but would you rather play Wake every year and not get a chance to play against VT and Miami? I can't imagine wanting to give up those games just to play Wake every year. As good as Wake has been recently they can't even sell out their small stadium with season ticket prices around $100 and they bring almost no fans with them to road games. I really doubt they peak the interest of many Tar Heel fans when the fall of the year comes around. If you have great memories of playing Wake Forest ever year then I apologize.

Also, as far as recruiting goes I'm sure Carolina would much rather have VT and Miami on their schedule every year than Wake. Not to mention recruiting coaches to your school, but do you really think Butch Davis would be calling Carolina home now if it wasn't for the additions to the ACC in football?

By the looks of the conference realignment you posted above it looks like you want an easier path to the conference championship game for the North Carolina schools. Since 1979 the teams you posted in UNC's conference have won the ACC a whooping 11 times out of 30 chances. Good thing you went with Clemson instead of UVA who has have been in the ACC just as long and been playing Carolina even longer or you would have gotten just 6 titles in 30 years in one division. Too bad you didn't want Maryland either who has been in the ACC since its inception, but went for GT who has only been a member since 1979.

ACC Titles for the division you proposed since 1979.
NC State - 1979
North Carolina - 1980
Wake Forest - 2006
Duke - 1989 (Split with UVA)
GT - 1990, 1998 (Split with FSU)
Clemson - 1981, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991

Maybe fans from the state of North Carolina would be happy with this alignment. Miami, FSU, BC, and VT play in one division and the other 8 can play in the other to see who gets to lose in the conference championship game.

Personally though I'd be fine if they did away with the divisions, played each team once each year for 11 games, and each team was required to play their one out of conference game against a FBS school. Top two team go to the championship game.

Same with basketball, too. Play everyone twice and then fill out remaining 8 or so games on your schedule with nonconference games. It would make winning the conference title much more fair and equitable. Plus, no one gets excited playing games with William & Mary, Furman, The Citadel, etc. Even a Wake-UNC or Duke-NC State game is more exciting than a UNC-Furman matchup.

Maybe if those teams played the two best teams in the conference to start with, but that isn't always the case.

On some levels yes, but the embarrassment in bowls factor would be higher. With how bad the ACC sucks in bowls now, imagine if every team was bumped up 2 spots.

Re: Rumored ACC Realignment

This move might help Ga Tech with their travel expenditures, but could potentially mess up the balance of power in the ACC in the long run.

Miami, Va Tech, and BC (and now UNC, actually) all have potential to be very good teams in any given year, meaning that some years the ACC could be badly lopsided. Even though it may not be the best conference now, it's at least very, very balanced and competitive top-to-bottom.

If you go to any of the sites that cover the ACC teams with message boards you will find plenty of discussion about it. I guess it remains to be seen if "where there is smoke there is fire" is really true.
