Couple questions for die-hard fans of big name programs

Do you always expect the program to keep itself elite? And if the program does lag off into mediocrity, do you get upset about it?

I ask this because it's obvious that my Canes suck. Badly. They damn near lost to UCF and I feel Duke will beat Miami next game.

The defense I have hope for, but Patrick Nix blows as an offensive coordinator. He has no identity for his offense. It's a mutt of a few offenses and it doesn't work at all. I would go deeper into this, but that's for another day.

So, as a Cane fan, I'm pissed to high heaven. And I'm thinking many other Cane fans would feel the same.

Come to my surprise, after reading the forums I usually go to, it's the complete opposite.

I see people say that the same stuff I 've heard for 4-5 years now. "They will get better. Give it time." Or "You guys are being too hard and critical on this team. These players and coaches are young. Stop the bitching!" Ooh and I especially love these...

(Paraphrasing)

"Everybody's negative! This team is playing better and harder than last year. Stop f'n whining!"

"A win is a win! Why are people complaining?? There are too many morons around here."

"We won! That's all that matters. Too many of you guys have too high of standards for this team. We suck and we knew this already. So be happy about a win!"

"We will be okay. We just played down to our competition."

Oh. This one is my absolute favorite...I'll post the exact quote this time...

We do not know what to expect from this team!

They have no identidy. Whether on defense or offense we just DO NOT KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN.
I agree fully...Unlike Grobe, RS is also an unproven HC...RS NEEDS time also, which is why i said in the other thread that time might not come here at The U...IMO RS given the right amount of time to learn and go thru his growing pains will be a fine HC...

I look at it this way:

IF you as a fan could KNOW the future of the team...and could see that RS would be the coach for 20 years, with the first FULL 10 YEARS being rebuilding, getting better, but basically being medicore, winning a few ACC titles and a few bowl games...

BUT...winning 3 NC's in the last 5 years, with the previous 5, getting better and better each year...

would you take that KNOWN outcome, vs hiring say a Pete Carroll, or an Urban Meyer(not specifically those coaches, but the point of the names)...and the future being an unknown, would it be worth taking the risk?

Now, looking at it the way we actually have it in reality...There is no proven guarantee for success...for all we know RS, Nix, Panz ETC...could all be fired tomorrow and 15 to 20 years down the road, they could all be CFHOF material...No one can tell what will happen.

The point is, WHY is the "QUICK FIX" the only solution? I know the answer for the universities and the Media darlings...it's simply a money thing at it's basis...

But why for the fans? What do we as fans of the U have to gain by swapping RS and staff for a new HC at this point?

Do people actually believe that Pete Carroll could physically walk into our team locker room and just turn this into a NC contender by next years end?

I'LL SAY IT AGAIN, AS I'VE SAID IT BEFORE...talent isn't the issue...UF, FSU, UM will always have top tier talent...ATTITUDE, PASSION, THE WILL TO WIN, THE WANT TO WIN, and HEART...are something that once Larry Coker took over, drastically declined, and that didn't happen overnight, that took years to slowly and deceptively drain our teams, over and over again...

That does not turn around immediately overnight, simply by hiring a new coach either...those assets take years to return...

Anyone looking for an overnight transition for this team is in for a long hard road of let downs...

Quote:
EXPECTATIONS
Bingo...part of the huge problem in this day and age of CFB...people shouldn't have expectations, only acceptance of what actually transpires...Expectations are made to be broken, especially when you have a team on the bottom trying to get up off the canvas, and the expectations are unrealistic...

Look at the games people...sometimes we are scoring, sometimes our D is lights out...other times our O looks like last year, and our D looks like a private school D in high school...it's raw, it's going to be very inconsistant, it's going to fluctuate up and down for quite awhile...

AT least we are in games this year, even the UF game we were in it...NO game has been out of reach...as with almost any young and inexperienced team, CLOSING GAMES OUT is almost guaranteed NOT to happen...they fold, they quite, they think they are God's gift to The U...

Quote:
its hard to lower most peoples expectations when all the commentators put us on that pedis stoole(sp?) as a great team that should be great all the time.
But don't we as fans do this also?...I'm just like any other fan here, i want a damn NC every single year, i want to rub it into every damn UT fan's face here in texas...But UM did that to themselves with that almost 2 decade of what many consider to be the best run a college team could have...it spoiled us...

Do you truly expect for UM to be that damn good year in and year out? realistically NO...but as a UM fan...HELL YES

Quote:
Also the team is getting worse as the season goes on not better.
not sure WORSE is the term i would use, but you have your own opinion, i would a term more like at a stand still...
Wow.

Now obviously, I can't think like this.

I know I made this longer than I wanted, but again...what are your thoughts?

Re: Couple questions for die-hard fans of big name programs

I feel your pain man...as a Gator fan who just had to endure the Ron Zook era, I know the frustration of mediocrity. I think it's unrealistic to expect a program to be elite every year (by elite, I mean a legit MNC contender), but I expect at a minimum for UF to compete for the SEC every year. There is NO excuse for them not to. I'm not saying they should win it, but they should be playing in November with the chance to go to Atlanta.

I think the thing that frustrated me the most about the Zook era was that the talent was there, but the coaching/game management was so inept. We couldn't win a close game to save ourselves. When your team is underperforming for the talent that is on the roster, that is when it gets frustrating.

In Miami's case, I'd give RS another year or so before I get really PO'd.

Re: Couple questions for die-hard fans of big name programs

First off, the avatar is blinding me lol.

Second, as a fan of a team who's been on hard times lately..yeah I expect the program to keep itself elite. We obviously didn't do that when we hired Mike Price and then Mike Shula. And we crawled into the realm of mediocrity for 5 years because of it. And we truly didn't leave that realm until we beat Georgia.

Third, I was extremely upset. There we were losing to Auburn on our home field and all I could think about was how I never really even expected us to win the game. It was ridiculous. I went to Alabama games expecting to lose.

I still don't expect to win every game. But I do expect to be in position to win it. And I feel confident in the coaches we have that we will win the majority of those games.

It's all cyclical, it's only a matter of time before my team falls back to the pack.

as a noles fan we went through some tough seasons, I got upset and it bugged me but I think it's because we have been spoiled by all the good times they've had. What bugs me more then anything is when you see teams like Georgia Tech(this year) having a good season with alot less talent and a brand new system, or teams with lesser talent having good seasons and you're wondering why your team is struggling when your pulling in big names each year..

no idea if coaches are known to do this, but maybe fsu and miami have been putting too much focus into what rivals and scouts thinks about prospects.

or maybe rivals and scouts automatically gives fsu and miami recruits high ratings for simpy being targeted by the two schools.

It is hard to get used to, but it seems like improvement is starting to take place. How many people thought we'd be 2-3 right now if you asked them after the Wake Forest game. Looking ahead FSU will be favored to win most of their games, sans Florida and maybe VaTech. I don't think a 9-3 season is unreasonable to hope for right now. I know FSU is a couple years away right now, but it would be nice to take over a weak ACC while it's still up for grabs.

Re: Couple questions for die-hard fans of big name programs

wow, those were some awful posts quoted in the OP.

major college sports will always be cyclical, no one can stay at the top year in and year out. Anyone who thinks their team is immune from that isnt right in the head. I dont blame fans who get upset about mediocrity or worse. It sucks and is probably worse if you've experienced winning before.

i would like Miami to be Elite every season, but that is not realistic. So I just try to deal with it and hope for the better.

Miami is screwed until they find a real Offensive Coordinator.
