You should see the Michigan message boards. It's the internet equivalent of civil war. People are turning on each other and going bat**** crazy. I can't even read The Fort anymore.

P2K.............try being an Irish fan for the last 15 years. I got to enjoy a whopping 2 National Championships( 77- 88, before our program went down the Crapper. Although our problems were Compunded by some really bad coaching choices and bad recruiting, it feels like we are starting to come out of it. It has been a very hard 15 years sprinkled with just a little bit of success, but nothing real or sustained..

Do you always expect the program to keep itself elite? And if the program does lag off into mediocrity, do you get upset about it?
Yes and yes. I know it's pretty much impossible for a team to be among the elite every single year, but I don't feel that there's anything wrong with expecting greatness. In the words of the great sage Donnie Simpson, "Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss you'll still be among the stars." Lol.

Every year, every game I expect Bama to win. I never expect losses. Ever. Even when during the latter part of the 90's and the early 2000s, I went into each season with the mindset that this year would be the year. So of course I get upset when it doesn't happen. Not so upset that I am consumed by it or anything, but I expect the team I root for to be great, that's all. When it doesn't happen, I look forward to the next year, when we will prove all the doubters wrong.

Re: Couple questions for die-hard fans of big name programs

I think what makes me more upset is that it was just seven seasons ago, Miami won the MNC. It was six seasons ago they almost repeated. It was five seasons ago, they were in the Orange Bowl.

And each and every year, I kept seeing the team go downward and downward. And it made me pissed because it's not like Coker was bringing in bad talent. That why I knew he should've been gone after the Orange Bowl. I was hoping for after the Fiesta Bowl, but that wasn't happening.

But all these delusional homers on the forums kept saying there was nothing wrong with Coker and that we were bad fans for grillin' on him like that. We know what became of that. Now the same with Shannon. Same people and new people keep telling the realistic fans to shut up and stop bringing negativity to the forum boards. They say "You expect a national championship every year! That's unrealistic!" And we alway tell them that is not what we expect and there is always a lame comeback. These people just drive me insane.

I think the thing getting me now is that Miami has alot of the freshmen playing and that is the "slogan" these Kool-Aid drinking fools are hanging their hat on. And they act like Miami has no talent whatsoever on the team outside of the freshmen, which is bunk. They think that unless we have superstars at every position, we can't compete and shouldn't be mad. An offensive coordinator with a clue can even make average players create a competent offense.

I'm old enough that I've seen Alabama at the top of the mountain, and win a National Championship. I've also seen Alabama football at one of its lowest points during the NCAA, and Mike Shula years. I agree with BK that these things work in cycles, and I'm hoping that I'm witnessing the return of Alabama to what it once was during my younger days. Hopefully the years of watching the program self destruct under the guidance of very poor leadership is over!

I feel you, as a fellow Irish fan and being so young I have been around for the bad years mostly the last time they won a NC I was 5 years old. We as fans have shown great restraint as of late. I fully expected to hear the fire Weis rants after the season they had last year, but I can see it turning around and i'm happy the administration is giving Weis the time to clean up what others in the past have destroyed.
So P2k all I can say to you and your fellow canes fans is be patient this is College football not the NFL. You need time to re-establish the recruiting and get the players in there to fit the system and compete. RS seems to be the one you all have been looking for since Butch left.

Re: Couple questions for die-hard fans of big name programs

I agree with BK....for once. It's all cyclical. The elite programs have down years, but eventually retool.

The past 7 years have been a lot of fun. A MNC, and other successes like the wins against Michigan.

The last two title games have been frustrating obviously, but it's nothing compared to the frustrations of the mid to late 90s when OSU had arguably the best team in the country and we couldn't beat Michigan. Cooper, while a good recruiter, just didn't "get it" in terms of the Michigan game.

I learned long ago, that I have as much control over the program's success as I do the weather. Nothing to get upset about.

Re: Couple questions for die-hard fans of big name programs

I understand the whole cyclical deal. I can udnerstand having a coach that was winning, but maybe his message and his methods finally became old and worn thin with local high schools or school officials and the losing begins.

But I can't tolerate stupidity and when ineptness from a coach is so blatant. And that's what is going on with Patrick Nix.

Honestly, I think it's the other fans' reactions that are getting to me more than anything. Like I'm a bad fan or not a true fan because I point out stuff that isn't going on or only look at the positive.
