At FSU they asked Ron Sellers if Ernie Sims could wear #34, he was fine with it. Sims (although IMO underachieved) as proven to be a great NFL player, so that didn't cheapen it. On the same hand Charlie Ward gave his blessing for Willie Williams to wear #17, that would have cheapened it if Williams was the thug at FSU he was everywhere else.

Now as it applies to someone like Deion Sanders who has done nothing to help the school and even pushed a star recruit away from the school (Noel Devine), I'd have no problem giving his number to someone like Nigel Bradham.

Retiring a jersey is stupid.

I remember it being an issue with Ernie Simms during his recruitment. Granted, that's not why he didn't go to Auburn/UGA, but the fact that some fans didn't want the top prospect in the country because he wanted a certain number was stupid on every level.

I more like the rationalization he didn't go to Georgia or Auburn because he couldn't wear #34 there.
