NCAA's ruling expected to include football forfeitures, probation for UA.

Quote:
TUSCALOOSA -- The NCAA is expected to levy multiple years of probation and past game forfeitures -- but a minimal loss of scholarships, if any -- against the University of Alabama's football program when sanctions are announced Thursday in the school's textbook case, sources have told the Press-Register.

Cornerback Chris Rogers was one of five football players suspended four games in 2007 during the school's textbook investigation. The NCAA's Committee on Infractions is expected to publicly release details of its long-awaited decision at 2 p.m. Thursday in conjunction with a media conference call. Select university officials were notified today. UA officials are prohibited from commenting publicly on the case until after the NCAA reveals its findings.

It is unclear what sanctions are in store for the other sports -- such as the school's track program - that are confirmed to have been involved.

Perhaps the most damaging aspect of today's ruling is that it will also bump Alabama back into the NCAA's five-year "repeat-violator" window, during which punishment could be worsened for additional sanctions.

UA representatives met Feb. 20 with the COI to answer to two allegations of potentially major violations. The first was the impermissible receipt of textbooks. The university was also accused of and admitted to "failure to adequately monitor its student-athlete textbook distribution system," per UA's formal response to the allegations.

Players in multiple sports were found to have exploited the school's textbook procedure, which allowed scholarship athletes to pick up required textbooks for classes at one counter and pay for them off an athletics department account at another register.

UA self-reported the findings of its internal investigation to the NCAA. The investigation found that players in multiple sports "exploited the University's textbook distribution system for scholarship student-athletes to acquire texts and materials of a value greater than $100 for girlfriends, boyfriends or other student-athletes."

Now we find ourselves starring down the barrel of the gun once again. Wonder why we can't just seem to get it right?

Krikpatrick gets the word

Quote:
Alabama five-star signee Dre Kirkpatrick has passed a summer class that held up his enrollment at UA and has also been approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse, according to a source close to the situation.

Phew! Here's hoping Lacy, Bowman and Sentimore get similar news.

Re: 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide

Our backfield in '09 would be downright sick if Lacy qualifies. Ingram, Upchurch, Richardson, and Lacy? Wow. 4 Rivals100 RB's....just plain filthy.

It would be just ridiculous man, and I'm really hoping it plays out that way. I didn't know Dre was still taking classes til' a couple of weeks ago. Before him, of the guys I knew still had work to do, I was hoping Lacy came through the most. He's gonna be a fantastic back.

Re: 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide

The thing about Lacy is he would've been a 5 star or close to it if not for his academic situation. His film is incredible. He's a lot like Trent Richardson. Not as built as Richardson, but has a little more speed.

Re: 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide

Bama gets a commitment from...a punter. Whoa. I can't remember Alabama ever having signing a punter and a place kicker in one class.

Does have an incredible leg and we do need a punter in the worst way. I do like though the way Saban is recruiting. Winning the field position battle is huge and this guy will certainly help along with our PK commit.

Re: 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide

Yeah I read that this morning, happened kind of fast. Good to see recruits coming out of Clarke County too, now if only Jackson could crank out some.

Re: 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide

BAMA picked up two more commitments in addition to Jay Williams yesterday. One was DB Deion Belue who is not yet ranked by the recruiting services. Looks to be one of those diamonds in the rough. He's listed as #21 in the BOL Alabama Top 30.

The other was ATH Brent Calloway out of Russelville, AL, and is the second commit for the 2011 class. Not bad for CNS to get 3 recruits while on vacation.

A rumor is going around right now, with supposed confirmation coming later on today that Michael Bowman has qualified. If true, that leaves Eddie Lacy and Darrington Sentimore as the only two left with academic work.

Not a bad weekend.

Re: 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide

Hopefully Belue can be our next return specialist. Replacing Arenas will be very tough but hopefully Belue can soften the blow. I don't really know what other position he'll play, but I feel sure we recruited him as a specialist.

I don't know very much about Calloway. I doubt he gets a strong look at RB with his speed(4.63 in the 40) but LB or Jack might be an option.
