Final Four: #4 MLB '10: The Show vs. #2 Tecmo Super Bowl

The first matchup of the greatest sports game tournament is an interesting one between the new school of great sports games (detailed simulations) vs. the old school of great sports games (arcade hits). Will nostalgia or the desire of simulation nuts win this matchup and advance onto the championship round?

As far as pure enjoyment level goes, TSB is going to be hard to beat. I can hear the intense rivalry game music now!

I love The Show, but for me, TSB gets the nod.

The Show 10 is great, but it didn't do anything groundbreaking.

Tecmo Super Bowl had the great arcade gameplay, but then added some much more, which was revolutionary at the time:

-Dynamic Player Performance. You think Madden 12 was the first football game to have this? Nope. TSB had it back in 1991. Guys could go from Hot to Cold, based on their performance, and you definitely felt a difference in how they played.

-Coach Mode. Yep, TSB had this back in the day. A nice way to change things up if playing single-player games became too easy.

-Editing rosters and playbooks.

-Season stat tracking for both team and individuals.

To me, it's those things plus the addicting gameplay, that puts Tecmo over the top. As I've said before, I bought a PS3 for The Show 10, but I doubt that 20 years down the road, I'll be playing that game. I'm still playing Tecmo Super Bowl, and that speaks volumes to me.

I find it ironic that two baseball titles, typically one of the poorest selling sports video games genres, would dominate these brackets. Either there are a lot of 'fans' who rent or a lot of people just following the herd.

I think it helps that Knights rosters are about to come out, baseball season is about to start and the Show just came out.
