A good sports video game lawyer could make a case that Punch-out!! (two exclamation points) is more puzzle/action game than an actual sports title. Forfeit!

This was a tough pick for me. Last night i busted out the Sega Genesis and was playing some old games and i played some Tecmo Super Bowl. Man that game was beyond easy. And i remember it being easy as a kid as well. But i would play it for hours. I used the think i was amazing at the game but really it's just because the game is so easy. So i went with Punch Out! because of the challenge it offered and the characters it gave us.

The reason TSB wins easily is because of multiplayer. You could play friends and have bragging rights. There was a different strategy involved with human opponents. Against the cpu if you use the raiders you can Bo Jackson them to death because ten yards was nothing for him to get even on a blitz. The computer wouldn't blitz that play most of the game. Humans would blitz that play 80% of the time and handle the rest of the defense manually. The rest of the raiders plays weren't that great but usually they didn't get blitzed, making it a fair game.
.... Punchout was fun but dry after beating it over and over. You also couldn't fight a friend which could have put it in higher standards(see Ring King). TSB for the no brainer!

TSB, You could have multiple Human players in the same season. It was fun with a friend/family and meet the in the Super Bowl. Bo Jackson was a beast, could have fun with the 49ers - Montana starts, and Young finishes them. I had the adjust the playbooks for the CPU just to give them a chance so I wouldn't key up on formations.

The fun factor for Tecmo Super Bowl was off the charts. It was a game that WAY ahead of its time on the NES. When I bought it in December 1991 for $54 I couldn't believe how amazing it was to have the ability to play an entire season, with stat tracking, in a game that had real teams and players. A timeless classic.
