The idea it got sympathy votes is dead on.
Couldn't you say the same with any game? The cheese in TSB with Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders isn't new....you could exploit the hell out that game....so much so when Madden '93 (I believe) came out, nobody cared about TSB anymore and it was deemed arcadey and unrealistic. In fact, if not for the re-introduction of the ROM, one could argue that TSB wouldn't be as nostalgic as it is.

Of course, like the 2K5 "sympathy" factor...it's an excuse to depreciate a good game. I don't think it's good when you try to do that with a game that won the tourney by a substantial margin.

Re: NFL 2K5 Crowned Operation Sports Best Sports Game

I didn't play 2k5 until recently after APF 2k8 came out, maybe it's because it's older but I didn't like the gameplay very much. I always thought the player models in the old 2k football games were horrible and flat. The passing is what I liked least and what really turned me off the game. It felt somewhat automatic like the recent next-gen EA games. Also I think all the QB's arms were capped at around 50 yards no matter what their arm strength was. Seemed like a cheap way to prevent big plays on the shoddy db ai.

Anyway I think it's a great achievement that they were able to pack in so many features in it but I didn't care for the gameplay. I liked APF and the old NCAA's much better.

Re: NFL 2K5 Crowned Operation Sports Best Sports Game

It took a lot of people a lot of time to figure out the greatness that was NFL 2k5. It was really under the radar, to the point where a lot of big sports gamers probably never even played it within a year or two of it coming out. Many people were turned off by the difference in gameplay between it and EAs games. NCAA 2004 had set the bar really hard in terms of football games and since 2k5 didn't play the same, people didn't give 2k5 much of a chance, especially at first.

My friend and I were the biggest NCAA '04 fans. But in the end, we played 2k5 more because it was more challenging and not as repetitive and a "go through the motions" type of game. Halftime shows, the juke stick, gang tackling, etc. made it a cutting edge game and was a great change of pace from EA.

In the end, the people who say it is overrated are probably actually underrating it and vice versa.

I personally got more enjoyment out of NCAA 2004 but I'm more of a college guy and I had the PS2 (no halftime replays). But I do realize how good it was and I loved the hell out of APF 2k8 (if only there was a franchise mode!) and disliked EA's next gen games thus far.

My other biggest sports game were NCAA '98 on PC (tons of bugs and all), Triple Play '98, Triple Play 2000, Hardball 5, High Heat 2001, NBA Live '95-'98, Fifa '98........and then taking it further back, I didn't play tecmo bowl so much but Tecmo Basketball was awesome for me, could play entire seasons and kept all your stats and everything. Also RBI baseball.

Agreed, 2K4 is far better gameplay wise, but people vote 2K5 because of its bells and whistles....and editor. Oh well.

It's a subtle jab at someone with some power at OS. Maybe not so subtle anymore...is that that zoe girl in your avatar by the way?

And one last thing about 2k5.....it wasn't nearly as nice on PS2....no halftime replays and had a fairly bad stuttering problem during night games for some reason. Xbox version was smooth as can be
