The depth of the game lies in Legacy mode. CH2k8 has the best dynasty mode of any game I've ever played.

Agreed. There is a huge disconnect between the "base" and critic ratings. For the most part, I think metacritic ratings are BS. Full of subjectiveness, bias, and they lack of knowledge about the game itself.

College Hoops 2K8 was the greatest college sports game ever made IMO. NCAA 2004 was a very fun game, but it's gameplay didn't capture college football(MARIO RUNNING) like CH2K8 did basketball. It didn't have the franchise killing bugs that CH2K7 had nor did it have the gameplay imbalances of NBA 2K8.

I was just going to say the same thing. Started out on pong and some old motorcycle barrel jumping game where you just had a pair of handle bars. Moved to the Atari 2600 for years, a little Intellivision, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Genesis...then came the PC era...finally moved back to a console so I could play college sports games on the Xbox and now the 360.

Have to admit I didn't play NFL 2K5, but I played a ton of some of the others...Baseball Stars I fell in love with. High Heat for the PC took it to another level for me as well as I even ran a site called High Heat Central, but College Hoops 2K8 is looking really strong in my book as I'm still enjoying the heck out of it. If 2K doesn't continue to make a college hoops game I see myself continuing to play this game for years.

Regardless of the "controversy" this tourney was fun for all. Triggered some great memories.

all of this aside and moving forward, I don't get the fascination with this game. or perhaps I don't get the level of fascination with this game to the point a sizable group of people here think its the greatest game ever made.

all measures out there say the game was good but not great. it got an 82 on metacritic (compared to high 80s for NHL and skate). the OS review gave it a 7 (lower than last years version). even the OS reader score only gave it an 8.5 (lower than last years version), lower than skate, NHL 08, MLB The Show 07, OOTPB, FIFA, NCAA Football and tied with NHL 2k8 JUST THIS YEAR.

i just don't get it lol.

NFL 2k5 I can at least rationalize. It was a well received and reviewed game (OS 10 - reader score 9 - metacritic between 92 and 90) that many in the industry feel is the benchmark for football games to this day (despite it having some flaws). and it is also a game that people continue to play regularly despite next-gen versions being out there.

The true problem with putting so much into metacritic and the guy who gave CH a 7/10 on this OS site is that unfortunately, reviewers/editors put in enough time to slightly test out each part of the game (if they even get that far) and rate it almost based solely on initial impression. College Hoops 2K8 is the type of game that the more you play it, the more you like it, and because it's so deep and has so many things that you "find" weeks down the road, you couldn't possibly give it a legitimate score with 5 hours of testing or "5 or 6 games with your buddy". It's simply too large of a game.

Re: NFL 2k5 Crowned Operation Sports Best Sports Game

Because I played five or six games and didn't feel the urge to play more or go out and buy it?

People don't play games before 20 hours when they didn't enjoy the first 19. If a game can't capture you and show you its value when playing five or six games then IMO it isn't a great game.

Take the same criteria and use it on any other game. If you're playing The Show, get six games in and don't really like it, chances are you're thinking about trading it in to salvage at least some of your hard earned ducats.

While I can't speak to the OS review because it was before my involvement and our "re-launch" i can tell you that you get a pretty good overall picture of a game playing it for 10+ hours, which is generally the goal we set for reviews. Sure you might miss some nuiances that you'll see in the 20th hour of playing, but you're not going to find things that change your grade more than .5 one way or the other.

Maybe the framework for this tournament is off base. Maybe it's wrong to compare 8-bit boxing games on a system with 2 buttons from 15 years ago to "next gen" basketball games on systems that can do practically anything except wipe your butt for you.

DAMMIT! MAYBE IT'S JUST DOWNRIGHT UNETHICAL!!

From merriam-webster Best: excelling all others.
You ask a quantitative question you get a quantitative answer. Tech standreds and features alone eliminate every pre-PS2 era game. Its just that simple.
Maybe 'Favorite sports game tournament' would have worked out better for everyone?

To each their own. People here are telling you why they enjoyed it. If you don't want to listen that is up to you.

I agree. I honestly believe that if you say something is undeserved, please state some legitimate reasons why. If you didn't like the game, that's fine....it's your opinion. But that doesn't discredit it from being a great game.

Say if I didn't like TSB....okay I didn't like it, but I would never say it wasn't a great game to others based off my personal opinion. That's why I found that Waiver Wire this week so ridiculous. They resorted to personal opinion and conspiracy theories to discredit why NFL2K5 was great but made no mention to the massive advancements it made. Realistic gang tackling, TV style presentation, double team blocking, realistic pockets, first person football, crowd cutscenes and detail (after a long run having a cutscene of a player in an oxygen mask), team specific playbooks, VIP, on and on and on. Same with CH2K8. You may not have liked these things and the game but I don't understand how you can try to discredit it's accomplishments.
