I knida feel the same way about OOTP getting beaten by Madden '01 (despite OOTP winning over here).

Re: Results and Discussion

I can see OOTP losing, since its a text sim and those will never get any respect. It's still a much better game than Madden 2001, which was simply "good" because it was on a new system.

The difference between the voting here in the World Series vs Triple Play and the voting at MM is just staggering.

Re: Results and Discussion

I am proud to be one of the 12 who voted for TEW. This should have been a double elimination tournament, IMO... much more indicative of who's really the best.

Re: Results and Discussion

how do you have a best of three in a popular vote?

i guarantee if you do it you have TEW getting 12 votes and 12 votes

For the final, it doesn't have to best of three.

I'm just saying, there are some good games getting knocked out quickly. If there was a loser's bracket, it would let games bubble up to where they should be. The loser of NHL 94 vs CH 2k8 shouldn't just be put at the bottom of the barrel, they're both great games. Given a loser's bracket, there's a possibility that NHL can lose in the first round but come back and be top 4 or 8 or so. I think that's pretty important. What's the best game, but which are the top 4 games or so.

Plus, the final being best of three can be squashed into one match because like you said, the best of three would be practically the same each time. So the finals would be the final game, no series of games.

Re: Results and Discussion

This is way too hard. Comparing NHL 94 to CH2k8 is like comparing apples to oranges. When people played NHL 94 they played for the fun of the game. When people play CH2k8 they play for simulation of the real sport. It's impossible to decide which is "better" when there's 14 years between when each was made. There should've been like a 3 year window for each title so that 2k5 games would be compared to 2k8 games, 94 games compared to 97 games and stuff like that.

Basically, it's impossible to actually figure out the best game when it's only head to head voting. But the idea is cool and that's why I've contributed to many of the polls.

Re: Results and Discussion

I think a better way to look at is to think of it not as which one is the better game, but which one was the better game for its time. That way, all the fancy technological games which are larger in scope and usually largely better than older games (prime example in CH2k8 to NHL 94), you instead rate how good they are around the games that were in that time period.

Although, I still think a double elim would let fluke seedings sort themselves out.

to me that's where the fun is though - trying to compare two games from two different eras and figure out a way to look at them on an apples to apples basis, and then discussing why you voted what you did.

Re: Results and Discussion

That's what makes it fun for me as well. A lot of these games bring back memories from being a little kid playing these games. I can clearly remember countless neighborhood tournaments of NHL 94 and Coach K from back then.

My problem is remembering exactly which version of the game was which. The wiki page helps a little, but I still can't always remember whether I liked Madden 93 or 95 better.
