Modern History of the NBA - 1984-85 to Present

In this thread I will be doing a recreation of every NBA season from the 1984-85 season forward. I will highlight certain regular season match-ups, and focus in on the playoffs. You can expect to see each team at least once per season(in case you have a favorite). The reason I chose the 1984-85 as a starting point is mainly 2 fold. 1) A great rookie class came in that year(Jordan, Olajuwon, Barkley, etc.) and 2) This was around the time when teams started taking more advantage of the three point line(added in 1979-80 season) which makes it easier to keep things semi-realistic since it is nearly impossible to get 3 point numbers as low as they were in prior years. Feel free to ask any questions.

OPENING NIGHT RECAP - OCT. 26 1984

Jordan makes NBA debut, Bulls get easy win

CHICAGO -- One thought crossed Michael Jordan's mind as he lined up in the tunnel for his pregame introduction: Don't trip.

The rookie made it through just fine, although his on-court debut was an up-and-down affair.

While Rose elicited oohs, aahs and groans, Orlando Woolridge and Steve Johnson provided enough big shots to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 108-89 victory over the Washington Bullets in the season opener Friday night.

Woolridge scored 31 points and Johnson added 19 in the win. The attention centered on Jordan, the No. 3 draft pick and it took him awhile to calm down.

Jordan wowed fans with his quickness and leaping ability but mixed in enough mistakes to remind them he is a work in progress. He finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Bullets had struggles of their own and seemed unable to keep up with the young and athletic Bulls. Gus Williams led the team with 20 points and 8 assists off the bench.

The Bulls are looking for Jordan to lead them out of the mess they created last season, when they won just 27 games, while bickering with each other and the coaches.

"Sky's the limit," Johnson said. "He has stuff to work on, but he already has stuff that he's ahead of the game. He's a hard worker, and I'm sure he's going to reach it."

Bird scores 34 as Celtics outgun Pistons 114-110

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Larry Bird stood in the corner with the ball and paused a little longer than he needed to, as if daring the Detroit Pistons to come out and guard him. Then he calmly made an open three-point shot to give Boston a 4-point lead with less then a minute to play.

Bird finished the game with 34 points and the Celtics knocked off the Pistons 114-110. Kevin McHale scored 26 and Dennis Johnson added 16 to help Boston to their first win of the season.

"It was a good Day One," Bird said. "Psychologically, you want to go into a team's building and win."

The defending champions got everything they could handle from Detroit who matched them point for point until final minute of play.

Kelly Tripuka scored 33 points and Isiah Thomas added 29 with 6 assists in the tough loss.

"You can't win a championship in the first game," Thomas said, "We'd like to start off 1-0, but there are 81 games left."

Aguirre explodes for 51 as Mavericks defeat Lakers

DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks surprised themselves in a bad way with a season-opening loss at home. Sunday they stunned the defending Western Conference champions.

Mark Aguirre scored 51 points and the Mavs were 48 of 86 from the field in their 115-107 win over the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday.

Aguirre made 21 of 28 field goals and grabbed 10 rebounds, Rolando Blackman added 19 points and Jay Vincent scored 14 for the Mavs.

"We took that home loss pretty hard, almost felt embarrassed we came up flat in the season opener," Aguirre said.

Karrem Abdul-Jabbar led the Lakers with 24 points. Magic Johnson had 17 points and 8 assists, and reserve James Worthy added 23 points for the Lakers.

"That was one of the longest nights we've had," Lakers coach Pat Riley said. "Every time we got momentum we shot ourselves in our own foot."

While the Mavs paraded to the line, Los Angeles got there just 12 times, hitting nine shots.

"I liked the way we played from start to finish," Mavs coach Dick Motta said. "We had a real determined collective mindset and it showed how we played. We were very aggressive and it showed in the number of times we got to the line. This is going to be key to our success."

"It's a big win character-wise because we had a flat game opening at home," Blackman said of the Mavs' 121-111 loss to Houston. "It helps us gain confidence that we can play with the best."

The Lakers are off to an 0-2 start after ending last season with a game seven loss to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.

"You've got to get stops. Keep teams off the free throw line. We were just a little stagnant, but it will be better," Magic Johnson said after the loss.

Nance lifts Suns past Sonics with 23 points

SEATTLE -- Message from Larry Nance to the rest of the NBA: Watch out!

Nance had eight of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and James Edwards scored 20 as the Phoenix Suns opened their season with an 111-97 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Sunday.

"I'm such an offensive weapon,'' Nance said, trying to suppress a wry smile. "We run every play through me. Nobody can shut me down.''

"The aggressive play he showed, especially in the second half, is something that he's capable of, and we're going to need him to do that on a consistent basis this season,'' Suns coach John MacLeod said.

Nance scored six points during a 12-2 run midway through the fourth, helping the Sonics build a 98-86 lead with 5:13 remaining.

"I've been working hard after practice, getting my shot and my stroke together, to start off the season shooting the ball well,'' he said.

Jay Humphries scored 19 off the bench and Mike Holton had 13 for Phoenix.

"We all know what type of player Larry is,'' Humphries said. "Tonight he stepped it up another notch. We feel on any given night, it could be any one of us. It could be me, it could be James. Each night we're going to need it from somebody.''

Tom Chambers had 24 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Sonics.

"We weren't doing the things in the second half that we did in the first half to get the lead,'' Chambers said. "Nance had a good game. Coach said not to leave him open. He can shoot the ball. We left him open and he made shots.''

Jack Sikma added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Sonics in the loss.
